Manning Receives Tennessean of the Year

Read Online

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee legend and VFL Peyton Manning received the 2016 Tennessean of the Year award on Saturday at the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame annual Champion Within Luncheon.

“We have honored many outstanding individuals in the past 50 years, but none greater than Peyton,” Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame executive director Bill Emendorfer said.

Manning receives this prestigious award as Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame celebrates its 50th Anniversary. After 18 outstanding years in the NFL, setting passing and touchdown records and winning his second Super Bowl, Manning retired from the game he loved.

Leading the Denver Broncos to a 24-10 win over the Carolina Panthers in Super Bowl 50, Manning earned his 200th career win (regular season and postseason included) to become the first player to reach that milestone. He is also the only quarterback in NFL history to have led two different franchises (he won Super Bowl XLI with the Indianapolis Colts) to Super Bowl Championships. Manning retired as the NFL’s all-time leader in passing yards (71,940), passing touchdowns (539), game-winning drives (56), fourth-quarter comebacks (45) and regular-season wins (186, tied with Brett Favre). He was also a five-time NFL MVP (2003, 2004, 2008, 2009, 2013) and a 14-time Pro Bowl selection.

Manning is the Vols’ all-time leader in passing yards (11,201), wins by a quarterback (39), 300-yard games (18), passing touchdowns (89), pass attempts (1,381) and pass completions (863).

The Tennessean of the Year is the premier honor of the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame that is presented to the individual or organization that has made significant contributions to our state through sports or other methods, demonstrating outstanding character and leadership. Manning was named Tennessean of the Year because of his character, work ethic, perseverance and the way that he has always represented himself, the game, his university and the great state of Tennessee.

Means Locks Down Portland in 4-1 Win

Starter Gets First Eastern League Win in Victory in Portland

Baysox starter John Means was in control throughout and the Baysox benefitted from clutch hitting in the middle innings to capture a fourth consecutive win with a 4-1 win in Portland. The Wednesday evening victory evened Bowie’s longest winning streak of the season.

Means made it look easy early cruising through the Sea Dogs order to throw just 47 pitches in the first four shutout innings. In the fourth inning, the Baysox broke through.

Chance Sisco led off the frame with a double to left-center. With two down, Sisco was at third base when Tucker Nathans lined an opposite field single over the leaping Portland shortstop to bring Sisco home.

An inning later it was Sisco coming through again. Bowie had runners at second and third bases with two down when Sisco pulled a two-RBI single to right field scoring both Julio Borbon and Henry Urrutia to give Bowie a 3-0 edge.

That was enough for Means who allowed just a seventh inning solo home run to former big leaguer Nate Freiman in his first win with the Baysox. Means allowed four hits in his seven innings while striking out one. Donnie Hart worked a 1-2-3 eighth inning and Jason Stoffel struck out two batters in the ninth to register his team-leading tenth save of the year.

Bowie now looks for a fifth straight win for a first time this season. RHP Brandon Barker will get the start with first pitch slated for 7:00 p.m. Coverage begins 20-minutes prior on wnav.com and via the Tune-In Radio App.

The Baysox return home Tuesday, June 14th for a 6:35 p.m. first pitch to open a three-game series with the Portland Sea Dogs. Get tickets at 301-805-6000 or online at baysox.com.

ERIE, Pa. – Cody Dickson gave up just two hits over seven innings as the Altoona Curve defeated the Erie SeaWolves, 5-1, on Tuesday night at Jerry Uht Park.

Altoona (32-25) snapped a three-game losing streak, holding Erie (23-35), which has the second-ranked offense in the Eastern League, scoreless after the first inning.

The Curve jumped on the board against SeaWolves starter Myles Jaye (Loss, 2-5) in the first inning with a run-scoring groundout by Reese McGuire and an RBI single by Edwin Espinal, the first of his three hits in the game.

Austin Meadows singled in the inning to extend his hitting streak to 16 games, the longest for the Curve this season and tied for the sixth-longest in franchise history.

Erie plated a run in the bottom of the first to make it 2-1 with a sacrifice fly by Jason Krizan, but it was the only run Dickson (Win, 5-2) allowed in the game. Jeff McVaney tripled in the inning, and Dickson did not allow another hit until the top of the seventh inning.

Dickson finished his night with one run allowed in seven innings with three walks and two strikeouts.

Baysox Notch Third Straight Win With 11-5 Victory

The Baysox scored in each of their first five innings to run up a big lead in a decisive 11-5 win in Portland in the series opener on Tuesday night. Bowie got contributions from all over the order, racking up 16 hits in the win.

Tied at 1-apiece in the second inning the Baysox offense went to work. With Drew Dosch at second base and one down, Austin Wynns doubled home the lead run. Glynn Davis then singled and stole second as a misfired throw allowed Wynns the plate. Davis later scored on an RBI-single from Henry Urrutia and Bowie was off and running up 4-1.

Late in the game up 6-2, Adrian Marin got his big night going with a long home run over the “Maine Monster” wall in left field. It was his second home run of the year. Marin finished the night a triple shy of the cycle.

Other big Baysox contributors at the plate included Wynns, who had three hits, Terdoslavich who doubled twice and reached base four times and Urrutia who had three RBI’s. Davis and Dosch each had multi-hit games as well.

David Hess (3-4) gave the Baysox a solid six inning start to end a personal three-game losing streak. Hess allowed two runs on five hits on the night. Jimmy Yacabonis worked a 1-2-3 seventh inning and Genison Reyes looked strong in a ten-pitch eighth before allowing three runs in the ninth.

Bowie now looks to keep their roll going with LHP John Means on the hill for a 7:00 p.m. first pitch Wednesday night from Hadlock Field. Coverage begins 20-minutes prior on wnav.com and via the Tune-In Radio App.

Binghamton regained the lead in the bottom of the third, thanks in part to control issues by Ronald Herrera. Derrik Gibson was hit by a pitch, Niuman Romero walked and Jayce Boyd was hit by a pitch, loading the bases with nobody out. Smith scored Gibson with a sacrifice fly and Cruzado doubled in Romero and Boyd, making the score 4-2.

The B-Mets added one more in the fourth when Boyd knocked in Gibson with a single. Trenton got two back when Mark Payton cranked a two-run homer in the fifth. Binghamton extended the lead to 6-4 in the fifth as Phillip Evans singled home Matt Oberste.

Casey Delgado (4-2) picked up the win with four strikeouts in five innings of four run ball. Herrera (5-4) was the loser after surrendering six runs on seven hits in five innings.

The Binghamton bullpen combined for four shutout innings, capped by a 1-2-3 ninth by Akeel Morris, who earned his sixth save and his third in as many games.

Cruzado finished 2-for-4 with three RBI, Gibson was 1-for-3 with a double and two runs and Smith went 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI.

Game two of the series is set for 6:35 PM on Wednesday with RHP Mickey Jannis opposing Trenton’s RHP Vincente Campos. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame Show can be heard starting a 6:20 PM on News Radio 1290 WNBF and the Binghamton Mets channel on TuneIn.

LSU ADVANCES TO SUPER REGIONAL WITH 5-2 WIN OVER RICE

BATON ROUGE, La. — Trailing 2-0 with the Tigers’ offense struggling at the plate, junior left-hander Jared Poche’ sat down 16 straight Rice Owls and allowed the LSU baseball team to mount a home run laden comeback and win the NCAA Regional, 5-2, on Tuesday in Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field.

LSU has won 17 of its past 20 games and Tuesday’s victory was the Tigers’ 21st come-from-behind win this season.

LSU (45-19), which won its 22nd NCAA Regional title in 29 all-time appearances, advanced to host Coastal Carolina (47-16) in a best-of-three NCAA Super Regional starting Saturday at 8 p.m. CT on ESPNU.

Game 2 of the series will begin at 8 p.m. CT on Sunday on ESPN2 or ESPNU, with the “if necessary” game 3 on Monday at either 12, 3 or 6 p.m. CT. The Chanticleers defeated North Carolina State to advance on Tuesday.

Ticket information for the NCAA Baton Rouge Super Regional will be announced Wednesday.

“The game turned around when Jared Poche’ entered the game,” said LSU coach Paul Mainieri. “He threw six innings probably about as well as he’s ever thrown. He’s pitched a lot of great games for us, but I don’t know if he’s ever had a more important one and a better one.”

The Tigers had a difficult time against Rice starter Willy Amador until the seventh inning. A sacrifice fly by designated hitter Bryce Jordan put LSU on the scoreboard with one out before first baseman Greg Deichmann hit a 417-foot, two-run home run off a stuffed ‘possum mounted atop an ESPNU camera in center field that gave the Tigers their first lead, 3-2.

“Deichmann’s home run was a special moment for everybody,” Mainieri said, “and we were glad to be a part of it.”

Deichmann, who was 3-for-4 with two RBI, was named the Regional Most Outstanding Player after going 9-for-15 with three runs and 10 RBI in four games.

Another homer by Michael Papierski to lead off the eighth inning pushed the advantage to 4-2. A two-out double by Kramer Robertson gave the Tigers the final margin.

Poche’ (9-4) earned the victory with six innings of nearly perfect relief. He allowed only one hit with six strikeouts, setting up Hunter Newman‘s eighth save of the season. Poche’ fired 69 pitches and retired 18 of the 19 Rice batters that he faced.

Rice’s Amador (2-2) kept the Tigers off balance for the first six innings. He left the game with one out in the seventh, one batter after Deichmann’s home run. Amador was charged with three runs on four hits with one walk and two strikeouts.

The Owls scored single runs in the first and second inning to chase LSU starter Jake Latz, who worked 1.1 innings with one walk and one strikeout. Reliever Russell Reynolds recorded the final two outs of the second inning before Poche’ took the mound to start the third.
