Columbia, S.C. – South Carolina junior right-handed pitchers Tyler Johnson and Clarke Schmidt and junior Alex Destino earned Preseason All-America honors from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, as announced on Tuesday afternoon. Johnson and Schmidt were first-team selections with Destino earning second-team honors. South Carolina opens the 2017 season on Friday, Feb. 17 hosting UNCG.

Schmidt earned third-team All-America honors from Collegiate Baseball and the NCBWA last year after going 9-5 with a 3.40 ERA.  He struck out 129 batters to 27 walks in 111.1 innings pitched with opponents hitting .248 against him.  Schmidt’s 129 strikeouts are the second-highest among returning pitchers from last season in Division I baseball.

Destino is South Carolina’s leading returning hitter as he hit .321 last season with 10 homers and 59 RBI in 60 games with 59 starts.

Five Gamecocks have received Preseason All-America honors this year. Schmidt was also honored by Collegiate Baseball and Perfect Game with junior right-hander Tyler Johnson a preseason first-team selection by Perfect Game, senior left-hander Josh Reagan honored by Collegiate Baseball and junior right-hander Wil Crowe a third-team choice by Baseball America.

Tue, January 31, 2017
WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – Entering its fourth year in the MAAC, the Monmouth baseball program was chosen to finish third in the MAAC Preseason Poll of the league’s coaches. Monmouth received 97 total votes and two first-place votes, and placed four players on the Preseason All-MAAC team, more than anyone else in the conference.

After finishing tied for second in the conference last year, Monmouth earned 97 votes, just two shy of Canisius who was picked second. Fairfield was selected to repeat as league champions, with Manhattan seven points behind Monmouth in fourth. Marist and Siena rounded out the top six, the number of teams that qualify for the MAAC Tournament, with Quinnipiac and Rider behind them. Niagara, Iona and Saint Peter’s rounded out the preseason poll.

All four of Monmouth’s First Team All-Conference players from last season return this year, and were all selected on the preseason team, including the 2016 MAAC Pitcher of the Year Ricky Dennis (Warrington, PA/Central Bucks South). He was joined by fifth-year senior outfielder Dan Shea (Wilmington, DE/Salesianum), senior infielder Grant Lamberton (Newark, DE/Salesianum), and senior infielder Shaine Hughes (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township).

Dennis picked up Pitcher of the Year accolades after going 9-5 with a 3.78 ERA, including four complete games and two shutouts. He struck out 58 in 85.2 innings, and allowed just 36 earned runs and 22 walks in that time. Opponents hit just .278 against him.

Shea led the Hawks in home runs and RBI’s last year, finishing with eight homers and 53 runs batted in, a number that left him second in the league and one shy of first. He hit .312 and slugged at a .490 clip with 10 doubles and a team-best 36 walks.

Lamberton finished second in the MAAC in hits with 75, including eight doubles and 22 runs driven in. He hit .341 as a junior to earn unanimous All-MAAC First Team honors, and got on base at a .445 clip. He was the only Hawk to start all 57 games last season, and scored a team-leading 50 runs.

Hughes was picked at first base after hitting .385 to lead the MAAC with a team-best 62 hits before an injury sidelined him for the final 17 games. He still led the team in doubles with 15 and posted a slugging percentage of .522 with an on base percentage of .457.

Monmouth opens the season at FAU on February 17th.

Tue, January 31, 2017

Dover, Del. (Jan. 30, 2017) — North Carolina Central avenged its only MEAC loss of a season with an 82-74 victory over Delaware State in Memorial Hall this evening.

The Eagles (15-6; 6-1 MEAC) have won six straight games since falling to the Hornets 69-68 on January 10 in Durham, N.C.  The Hornets (5-18; 2-6 MEAC) have lost six in a row since that first meeting with NCCU.

Patrick Cole set the pace for the Eagles, outscoring the Hornets by himself in the first 10 minutes to give the visitors an early double-digit lead. Cole scored NCCU’s first eight points and 17 in the first 9:52 of the game. His fourth three-pointer gave the Eagles a 22-12 lead with 10:08 to go in the first half. He ended the half with 19 points to lead No. Carolina Central a 38-21 advantage at the break.

Cole was 6-for-9 from the field, including 4-of-5 on three point attempts and perfect on three free throws in the first half.

He added nine points in the second half to lead four Eagles in double-figures with a game-high 28 points.

Cole, the MEAC’s fourth leading scorer with a 19.2 average entering Monday’s contest,  had five three-pointers (5-7) and was 9-9 at the free throw line in the game.

NCCU opened up its biggest lead, 60-36, on lay-up by Rashaun Madison with 14:05 left to play.

Delaware State showed some spark over the next four minutes, outscoring the Eagles 13-3 to raise hopes for a comeback.

DeVaughn Mallory, playing in his second game since missing the previous seven due to a calf injury, scored on a tip-in to cut the Eagles’ lead to 63-49 with 10:04 left to play. Mallory came off the bench to score 11 points on 5-for-5 shooting from the field.

The Hornets outscored NCCU 14-6 in the final three minutes to make the final score more respectable. DSU won the second half 53-44, but it was too little too late to extend a three-game win streak against the Eagles.

Devin Morgan was high scorer for Delaware State with 24 points, highlighted by 7-for-7 shooting at the free throw line and three three-pointers (3-8). He also led all players with a season-best nine rebounds, two short of his career-high.

DSU’s Dana Raysor continued his hot long range shooting of late, scoring 12 points on four three-pointers on four tries. Raysor has nailed 10 three-point shots in the last two games.

Artem Tavakalyan came off the bench to add 10 points for the Hornets.

Dajuan Graf and Kyle Benton contributed 12 points each, while Madison had 10 for the Eagles.

After shooting just 20% in the first half (5-25), Delaware State was 20-for-36 in the final 20 minutes (55.6%) to post a 41% mark for the game (25-for-61).

North Carolina Central was 26-for-55 from the field (47.3%) and 8-of-20 on three-point shots (40%) in the game.

The Hornets will try to snap their six-game slide at home against North Carolina A&T on Wed. (Feb. 1). Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in Memorial Hall following the DSU/NCA&T women’s contest.

DSU defeated the Aggies 55-53 in its 2016-17 MEAC opener on Jan. 7 in Greensboro, N.C.

STINGERS
… Delaware State’s Kavon Waller extended his streak to 14 games with at least one three-point field goal in Monday’s contest

Peter Jok Named Finalist for Jerry West Award

Hawkeye senior one of ten players named to watch list

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced today the 10 watch list finalists for the 2017 Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Award, which includes University of Iowa senior Peter Jok.

Named after Hall of Famer and 1959 NCAA Final Four Most Valuable Player Jerry West, the annual honor in its third year recognizes the top shooting guards in Division I men’s college basketball. A national committee comprised of top college basketball personnel determined the watch list of 20 candidates in October, which has now been narrowed to just 10.

Jok is the Big Ten leading scorer, averaging 21 points per game. He has scored 25 points or more eight times this season, including a career-best 42 against Memphis on Nov. 26. In addition to leading the Big Ten in scoring, he is first in free throw accuracy (.915) and second in 3-pointers made per game (2.9).

“As one of the best shooting guards to ever play the game, Jerry West’s drive for perfection is what set him apart,” said John L. Doleva, President and CEO of the Basketball Hall of Fame. “With their unwavering dedication to the game, these ten finalists have set themselves apart from this year’s competition as well.”

Jerry West attended West Virginia University and averaged 24.8 points and 13.3 rebounds per game in his three varsity seasons. He led his team to the NCAA Championship game in 1959 and was named a consensus All-American in 1959 and 1960. As a professional player, West played 14 seasons in the NBA with the Lakers making the All-NBA First Team 10 times. West won an NBA championship in 1972 and was named the NBA Finals MVP in 1969, despite his team not winning the championship. In 1979, West was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

In March, five finalists will be presented to Mr. West and the Hall of Fame’s selection committee for the 2017 Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Award.  The winner of the 2017 Jerry West Award will be presented at the ESPN College Basketball Awards Show live from The Novo by Microsoft in downtown Los Angeles on April 7.

Previous winners of the Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Award include Buddy Hield, Oklahoma (2016) and D’Angelo Russell, Ohio State (2015). For more information on the 2017 Jerry West Award, log onto HoophallAwards.com.

He followed that up with a 15-7 major decision over Virginia Tech’s Ty Walz, who was ranked third nationally by InterMat, in the Blue Devils’ loss to the Hokies on Sunday. The loss by Walz was only his third in 19 bouts and his first to someone other than Wisconsin’s Connor Medberry, the nation’s second-ranked heavyweight.

About the Match

  • Duke and Gardner-Webb will square off Wednesday at 7 p.m., at Paul Porter Arena. Admission is free and for those unable to make it can catch the action live on BigSouthSports.com.

Cal Poly to Host Northern Colorado for Final Home Dual Meet of 2016-17 Season Sunday
— Cal Poly Wrestling —

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly’s final home dual meet of the 2016-17 wrestling season will be held on Super Bowl Sunday.

The Mustangs will host Northern Colorado, with the first bout slated to begin at noon.

Cal Poly split a pair of dual meets last Saturday at Righetti High School. After falling to No. 24 North Dakota State 30-6, the Mustangs edged Central California rival CSU Bakersfield 21-18.

Senior Colt Shorts snapped an 18-18 deadlock with a 6-0 decision in the final bout to put Cal Poly over the top, raising the Mustangs’ record to 5-8 for the season and 1-2 in Pac-12 duals.

Northern Colorado enters Sunday’s dual with a 1-6 mark, falling 35-6 to No. 14 Oklahoma last Sunday in Greeley, Colo. Only winners for the Bears were 125-pounder Trey Andrews and 165-pounder Keilan Torres, both by decision.

Andrews and Torres are two of four nationally ranked wrestlers on the Northern Colorado roster. Andrews, ranked No. 28, is now 20-12 after his win last week while Torres, ranked No. 25, improved to 20-10.

Other nationally ranked Bears are 141-pounder Timmy Box (21-8), ranked No. 24, and Dylan Gabel (18-7), ranked No. 20 at 184 pounds.

Northern Colorado’s lone dual meet win this season was a 29-12 nod over Boise State. In addition to Oklahoma, the Bears have lost to North Dakota State, South Dakota State, Oregon State, Iowa State and Arizona State.

Northern Colorado, which wrestles at CSU Bakersfield on Friday, is coached by Troy Nickerson. In his third season with the Bears, Nickerson was an assistant coach at Iowa State for two seasons and also served as co-head coach of the Finger Lakes Wrestling Club from 2011-2012 in Ithaca, N.Y. He wrestled at Cornell from 2006-10, earning All-American honors all four seasons, including a national championship at 125 pounds in 2009 and a pair of runner-up finishes.

A year ago in Greeley, Colo., Northern Colorado edged the Mustangs 22-19, improving its advantage in the series to 3-1. Cal Poly’s lone win over the Bears was a 22-16 decision in 2007 at the Mott Athletics Center.

Shorts is ranked anywhere from No. 18 to No. 20 in the major national wrestling polls, sporting an 18-11 record with four falls.

Other Mustangs scheduled to compete Sunday with winning or .500 marks include Colton Schilling (1208) at 141 pounds, 174-pounder Travis Berridge (11-6), 184-pounders Mitch Woods (11-5) and Sohrab Movahedi (12-5), 197-pounder Thomas Lane (11-11) and 285-pounder Spencer Empey (14-13).

In addition to CSU Bakersfield, Cal Poly has beaten San Francisco State, Indiana, Cal Baptist and West Virginia. The Mustangs’ five dual meet wins this season are the most since the 2011-12 squad posted a 6-7 mark.

Next week, Cal Poly will wrap up the dual meet portion of its schedule with Pac-12 matches at Oregon State on Friday, Feb. 10, and at Boise State on Sunday, Feb. 12.

Stanford will host the Pac-12 Conference Championship on Sunday, Feb. 26, with the NCAA Division I National Championship slated for March 16-18 at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Missouri.

Baseball News

The return of baseball to Pike Creek in 2017 will be welcomed by many at Goldey-Beacom and provide challenging games, as shown with the unveiling of the team’s schedule.

The Lightning will play 17 non-league contests to open things, beginning with the College’s inaugural game February 18 at Barton.  After that three-game series, GBC will play a four-game set at Newberry before heading to Queens (NY) for a March 4 doubleheader.

Goldey-Beacom then will play its first home game in school history Sunday, March 5 against Queens (NY) at noon.  One of 11 home dates on the schedule, the Lightning will call Ed Doyle Field in Hockessin, DE its base.  The field is run by the Piedmont Baseball League and presently is going through renovations that should be done in time for the opener.

The 32-game slate in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference opens March 17 at home against University of the Sciences and is one of eight league doubleheaders in Hockessin on the schedule.  The home finale within the CACC is April 28 against reigning-league-champion Felician and the regular season closes May 2 at home vs. Millersville.

With the addition of Goldey-Beacom into baseball, the CACC now sports 12 teams and will divide into two six-team divisions.  A similar format is used for men’s basketball, women’s basketball and volleyball.

GBC will be in the South Division along with Wilmington (DE), U. of the Sciences, Philadelphia U., Chestnut Hill and Felician.  It will play each team in two doubleheaders – one at home and one on the road – for a total of 20 games.  The first game each day is nine innings and the second is a seven-inning contest.

The North Division includes Caldwell, Bloomfield, Concordia (NY), Dominican (NY), Nyack and Post.  The Lightning will play each of these schools in one doubleheader for a total of 12 contests.  All non-division games are nine innings.

The top four teams in each division advance to the CACC Tournament.  The quarterfinals feature a single-elimination game May 6 with each contest at the higher seed.  The four remaining schools play in the double-elimination portion May 11-13 in Waterbury, CT.

Tom Riley is the team’s first coach after spending 2013-15 as an assistant coach for Delaware State University.  He handled many things within the program including recruiting, monitoring academic development, heading the team’s Dugout Club for fundraising, leading the program’s baseball camps and being in charge of field maintenance.

Riley’s influence helped the Hornets in 2014 lead Division I with a .336 batting average, a .435 on-base percentage and close second with 8.2 runs per contest.  The 2013 unit paced the NCAA with 3.02 stolen bases per game.

Baseball is the College’s first debutant since women’s tennis was introduced in 2005-06 and will be the school’s 11th sport.

While baseball will be new under the name Goldey-Beacom College, it will be a re-instatement for the institution.  Baseball was played at what was then called Goldey College as early as 1922 and continued into the 1950s.  This included an undefeated season in 1935 and the Atlantic Coast championship (no affiliation with the current Atlantic Coast Conference) in 1947.

Stanford Dominates Boise State

Cardinal wins nine of 10 bouts

BOISE – Winning nine of the 10 bouts, the 17th-ranked Stanford wrestling team dominated Boise State 32-3, Saturday, in Bronco Gym. The Cardinal improves to 8-2 overall and remains undefeated in the Pac-12 at 4-0, while the Broncos drop to 1-6 overall and 0-2 in the conference.

Redshirt junior Nathan Butler wasted no time pinning Gabriel Gonzalez in 21 seconds at heavyweight to start the dual. Ranked ninth nationally, Butler quickly registered a takedown and put Gonzalez on his back. It was the first fall of the season for Butler and the fastest recorded by a Cardinal wrestler this season. He now stands at 19-7 overall and 7-3 in duals.

True freshman Gabriel Townsell, ranked 19th, earned an 8-6 sudden victory decision over Will Bardezbain at 125 pounds to increase the Cardinal lead to 9-0. Bardezbain, who stands at 5-9, gave Townsell trouble early and held a 6-3 lead going into the third period. Townsell had choice and selected down to start the period, and quickly tallied the escape. Townsell tied it up a 6-6 with a takedown to force overtime, where he scored a double-leg takedown for the win. The Oak Park, Illinois native improves to 14-7 overall and 6-1 in duals.

Redshirt junior Connor Schram added to Stanford’s lead with a 2-0 decision over Josh Newberg at 133 pounds. Coming in at No. 13, Schram racked up two minutes of riding time in the second period when Newberg elected to start in the down position. Schram posted an escape to start the third and finished with 1:43 seconds of riding time in the win. He has now won a season-high eight matches in a row, moving to 12-2 overall and 6-1 in duals.

At 141 pounds, No. 3 Joey McKenna dominated Rami Haddadin in a 22-4 technical fall in 6:31 seconds. McKenna posted six takedowns, six near fall points, three escapes and 2:24 of riding time, while giving up a reversal and one escape. It was the third technical fall for the sophomore this season, who leads the team with a 23-1 overall record and a perfect 8-0 mark in duals.

Tommy Pawelski gave the Cardinal a 20-0 lead in the dual at the intermission with a 4-2 decision against Boise State’s Dakota Wall at 149 pounds. Earning his second dual win of the season, the redshirt junior had dropped his previous six matches dating back to November.

Redshirt sophomore Paul Fox picked up his 20th win of the season with a 9-3 decision over Fred Green at 157 pounds. Leading 4-1 after the first, Fox tacked on two more takedowns and an escape in the second period despite being ridden out in the third.

At 165 pounds, No. 18 Keaton Subjeck came from behind to top Demetrius Romero, 10-7. Romero scored two takedowns in the opening period and led 4-2 after the first. An escape and a takedown gave Subjeck a 5-4 advantage after two. Romero tied it up with an escape to start an active third period. Subjeck briefly took the lead with another takedown, but Romero quickly scored a reversal to tie it 7-7. Subjeck managed to escape making it 8-7 Stanford. Romero went in on a shot late in the period, but Subjeck countered for his final takedown with less than 10 seconds remaining. The El Dorado Hills, California native improves to 16-6 overall and 7-2 in duals.

Redshirt senior Peter Galli also registered his 20th win of the season, defeating Austin Dewey, 6-2, at 174 pounds. Listed at 19th nationally, his first career ranking, Galli scored a first period takedown to hold a 2-1 lead after the first period. He picked up an escape in the second frame and added another takedown and a1:12 of riding time to move to 20-5 overall and 7-1 in duals.

The Broncos avoided the shutout as Kadyn Del Toro turned in an 8-2 decision over Zach Nevills at 184 pounds. Del Toro scored all eight of his points in the first period.

Redshirt senior Josh Marchok capped off the scoring with a 6-3 decision over Harley DiLulo at 197 pounds. With no score in the first, Marchok chose down to start the second. He earned a reversal for a 2-0 lead and ended the period up 4-1. An escape by DiLulo to start the third cut it to 4-2, but Marchok secured another escape to pick up the win. The Schaumburg, Illinois native is now 8-5 overall and on a season-best three match winning streak.

Stanford closes out its Pac-12 dual season at Oregon State on Monday, Jan. 30 at 7 p.m. The action will be televised on Pac-12 Networks.

Wolverines battle, drop dual to Wyoming by criteria
Jan. 28, 2017
OREM, Utah – Despite winning a trio of overtime matches and splitting the contest at five bouts apiece, the Utah Valley University wrestling dropped a Big 12 Conference dual meet to Wyoming by criteria (17-16) on Saturday afternoon at Lockhart Arena.

Trailing 16-10 after eight bouts, Kimball Bastian and Will Sumner won the final two matches of the contest for UVU (4-3, 1-1 Big 12) to deadlock the team score at 16-all. But the Cowboys (4-5, 2-1 Big 12) managed to hold the criteria tiebreaker thanks to a 42-37 individual match advantage to give the dual to Wyoming.

“It was a great match and I was pleased that we were able to win three of the four overtime matches. This shows where our guys heads and hearts are at,” head UVU coach Greg Williams said. “Overall it was disappointing to lose, especially since it was so close. But the effort is there, the confidence is there, and I love the fact that the fans were able to see another tight match.”

With the dual meet opening up at 197 pounds, the 24th-ranked Tanner Orndorff got the Wolverines off to a solid start with an 11-2 major decision over Wyoming’s Nate Shaw. The UVU redshirt freshman controlled the bout with four takedowns, an escape, a penalty point and an additional riding time point to record the bonus-point victory.

In a very tightly contested heavyweight match, Dustin Dennison managed to extend UVU’s lead to 7-0 by pulling out a 4-2 triple-overtime win over Brandon Tribble. With the bout all tied up at 1-1 at the end of regulation, the two managed to fight off a series of shots to send the match to the tiebreakers. After each wrestler scored an escape in the first set of tiebreaker rounds, the bout then headed to the second sudden victory period with the score all squared up at 2-2. With both wrestlers in the neutral position, Dennison made his move as he managed to score a takedown on the Wyoming senior early in the round to record the 4-2 sudden-victory 2 win.

The Cowboys then battled back to cut the deficit to 7-3 with a hard fought 2-0 decision by No. 16 Drew Templeman, but back answered the Wolverines with a 4-2 overtime win from Jarod Maynes at 133 pounds to extend UVU’s lead to 10-3. With Maynes holding to a 2-1 lead late in the bout, Wyoming’s Gunnar Woodburn managed to gain more than a minute of riding time to send the match to overtime. Then with Woodburn looking for a takedown in the opening sudden victory round, Maynes managed to convert the Woodburn shot into a takedown of his own to record the victory.

Defending NCAA finalist and eighth-ranked Cowboy Bryce Meredith then answered for the Pokes by earning a 12-2 major decision over Trevor Willson to cut the team score to 10-7. Wyoming 149-pounder Cole Mendenhall followed that up with a 3-2 decision win of his own over Grant LaMont to tie the team score at 10-all.

With Utah Valley 157-pounder Raider Lofthouse trailing No. 19 Archie Colgan by a score of 4-2 entering the third period, the Wolverine sophomore managed to tilt the ranked Cowboy on his shoulders to secure a four-point nearfall to take a 6-4 lead. Following a quick escape by Colgan coupled with a riding time point, the bout then headed to overtime with the score all knotted up at 6-6. In the opening sudden victory period, Lofthouse looked very close to securing a defensive fall on a scramble but Colgan managed to find a way out and score the decisive takedown to win the bout by a score of 8-6 to give Wyoming its first lead of the night at 13-10.

Spanish Fork, Utah native and 16th-ranked Branson Ashworth then extended UW’s lead to 16-10 with an 8-2 victory over Koy Wilkinson at 165 pounds, but back answered Wolverine 174-pounder Kimball Bastianwith a much-needed victory to pull the score to 16-13 with just one match to go. With Bastian and UW’s Kyle Pope all tied up at 1-1 late in the final stanza, the UVU redshirt freshman managed to secure the only takedown of the match with just 20 seconds to go to score the victory.

The dual then came down to the 184-pound match and UVU’s Will Sumner didn’t disappoint as he managed to pull out a 3-2 double-overtime win over Lucas Lovvorn. Trailing 1-0 entering the final period, Sumner chose the neutral position and did everything he could to score the go-ahead takedown, but Lovvorn kept his distance, which resulted in a stall point to send the match to overtime. After a scoreless opening sudden victory period, Sumner picked up a huge reversal in the opening tiebreaker round to take a 3-1 lead. Lovvorn later countered back with an escape in the second tiebreaker period to make it a one-point score, but Sumner managed to hold onto his lead to pickup UVU’s third overtime win of the night and deadlock the team score at 16-16 before the additional point was awarded to Wyoming via criteria.

Despite suffering the setback, the contest marks Utah Valley’s best effort against UW since it defeated the wrestling power Pokes by a score of 26-19 in Laramie in 2006.

Saturday’s dual meet also caps UVU’s month-long homestand with a 2-1 record after the Wolverines previously defeated Air Force (18-15) and CSU Bakersfield (21-17). It is also marks Utah Valley’s second dual of the season to be decided by criteria, as it previously knocked off No. 23 Oregon State in December by the same 17-16 score.

UVU will now hit the road for a pair of Big 12 Conference duals next weekend against ranked foes in the Dakotas. The Wolverines will first face No. 23 North Dakota State on Friday, Feb. 3 in Fargo before closing the trip at No. 19 South Dakota State on Saturday, Feb. 4 in Brookings. Following the trip, UVU will return home to welcome No. 20 Stanford to town on Feb. 10.
