CLARION, PA–  Competing without two of their top wrestlers, an All-American and a two-time conference champion, the Broncs lost an Eastern Wrestling League dual meet at Clarion Sunday.

“You have to go with who you have,” said Rider head coach Gary Taylor. “Give Clarion credit. They have some good wrestlers who wrestled hard.”

For Rider (2-2, 0-1 EWL) sophomore Chad Walsh (Cherry Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic) won by fall. “Chad wrestled very hard and got us some important points,” Taylor said. “Unfortunately it was not enough.”

Rider senior Conor Brennan (Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) and  sophomore Michale Fagg-Daves (Somerset, NJ/Franklin) also won.

Clarion (3-4, 2-1 EWL) jumped out to a 15-0 lead.

The Broncs defeated Clarion 38-3 at Rider last season.

Rider and Clarion have now met 17 times since the series began in 1997-98, with Rider with 14.

Rider hosts Lehigh (11am) and Northwestern (2pm)  December 5. “Hopefully we will be a bit healthier by then,” Taylor said. “They are two very strong teams so we’ll need everyone to compete hard.”

San Francisco, Cal. (Nov. 29, 2015) — For the second time in a three-game California swing this week, the Delaware State men’s basketball team followed-up a solid first half performance with subpar play in the final 20 minutes. The result was a 67-47 loss to the San Francisco Dons at the Sobrato Center today.

The Hornets led 25-23 at the break, but were outscored 44-22 in the second half to fall to 0-7 this season. The Dons won for the second time in three games to improve to 4-2.

San Francisco knocked down 16 of its 26 second half shots (61.5%), including six-of-10 from three-point range (60%). Delaware State misfired on 16 of its 28 second half field goal attempts (28.6%). The Hornets were two-for-12 from beyond the arc (16.7%) in the final 20 minutes.

Delaware State’s DeAndre Haywood hit his first three shots, each from three-point range, to lead the Hornets to an 11-9 lead. Dana Raysor, Devin Morgan and Aric Dickerson also nailed three-pointers during a four-minute stretch of the half for DSU. Dickerson’s triple gave the Hornets their biggest lead, 22-16, with 6:08 to go before the break.

Haywood had 11 and Raysor five to lead the Hornets to their two-point lead at the break.

San Francisco started quickly in the second half, outscoring DSU 15-5 in the first five minutes to open up an eight-point lead. The Dons pulled ahead 38-30 on a lay-up by Tim Derksen with 15:00 left to play.

After the Hornets cut the deficit to 38-35 on a three-pointer by Kavon Waller, USF ran off 16 straight points to blow the game open. Devin Watson capped off the rally with a three-pointer to give the Dons a 54-35 lead at the 8:00 mark of the second half.

USF opened up its biggest lead, 66-39, on two free throws by Watson with 3:11 remaining.

Haywood was scoreless in the second half, but still led the Hornets with 11 points. Morgan added eight and Waller seven for DSU. Joseph Lewis was tops on the team with six rebounds.

San Francisco held a 41-31 advantage on the boards in the game.

Watson was high man for the Dons with 18 points, highlighted by four-of-seven shooting on three-pointers. He also led all players with seven assists. Derksen added 14 points for USF.

The Hornets will return to action on Fri. (Dec. 4) at Old Dominion. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Norfolk, Va.

CHAPEL HILL — Bonus point wins from Evan Henderson, Alex Utley and Chip Ness powered No. 18 North Carolina to a 24-12 victory over in-state foe Appalachian State Sunday afternoon at Carmichael Arena. Henderson recorded his 38th career pin to move into a tie for fourth in school history as the Tar Heels improved to 4-1 in duals this year.
Appalachian State (3-1) jumped out to an early 6-0 lead thanks to wins at 125 and 133. Vito Pasone topped Tyrone Klump 9-3 before Jacob Grigg’s last-second reversal lifted him past A.C. Headlee.
Henderson needed just 2:07 to put Michael Longo on his back at 141, as the redshirt senior evened the dual at 6. Henderson now has 109 career wins, tied with Justin Dobies for seventh in program history.
Christian Barber gave UNC its first lead of the day with a 3-1 decision over Matt Zovistoski at 149. The bout was even at 1 after two periods and headed for overtime before Barber scored a takedown in the final 10 seconds to secure the decision.
Robert Henderson and Ethan Ramos gave Carolina some breathing room with wins at the middle weights. Henderson landed a takedown and added a four-point near fall in the third period to win 11-6 at 157 before Ramos outlasted Forrest Przybysz 8-6 at 165.
Appalachian State got back on the board at 174 when Nick Kee beat John Michael Staudenmayer 5-3, but the Tar Heels put the dual away with bonus point wins in the next two bouts.
Redshirt senior Utley used a seven-point sequence in the third period to score a major decision against Taylor Jackson at 184. With the match tied at 1, Utley escaped, landed a takedown and then got four back points in less than 10 seconds. The redshirt senior added another late takedown to win 10-2 and notch the major decision.
Ness was dominant at 197 against Tyler Radford. The sophomore almost got a pin late in the first period before two more four-point near falls in the second saw the bout stopped after 4:38 with Ness up 18-1.
No. 12 Denzel Dejournette took the final match of the day at 285, beating Cory Daniel 9-2.
Carolina will be off next week for final exams before returning to the mat on Dec. 12 against Army West Point in Brooklyn, New York.

FIGHTING ILLINI WRESTLING

Illini Improve to 8-0 on the Season

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Fighting Illini swept the three duals today in New York as they beat Maryland (34-9) and Drexel (31-9) convincingly at Madison Square Garden before outlasting No. 25 Princeton 20-15 at the New York Athletic Club.

Against Maryland, true freshman Francis Edelen opened the scoring with his first career victory at Illinois. The Oak Forest native claimed a hard-fought victory over Jhared Simmons, coming back from down 6-4 in the 3rd period to earn the 8-6 decision.

“Francis has competed hard in every match he’s wrestled this year,” said Coach Heffernan. “He fought hard and gave himself some chances to score. He did a great job.”

Coach Heffernan’s top wrestlers again led the way with dominating performances against Maryland. Zane Richards accelerated the Illini’s advantage to 9-0 with a pin at 133 pounds (4:20), his second of the season. With the lead at 12-3, No. 1 Isaiah Martinez dominated #16 Louis Mascola with a 24-5 technical fall, before Brunson sealed the victory with his fifth pin in six matches this season. Maryland closed the gap with a pin at 184, but Andre Lee’s first tech fall of the season paired with a 6-1 decision by Brooks Black finalized the 34-9 victory.

“Zane {Richards}’s looked really good so far but needs to be consistent for a full season,” said Heffernan.  “He had a good summer and fall and keeps getting better.”

In the second dual at Madison Square Garden, the Orange and Blue fell behind 3-0, but quickly regained control as Zane Richards improved to 7-0 on the season with a 15-6 major decision. The Fighting Illini put some distance between them and the Dragons when Brock Ervin earned a 16-0 tech fall and Martinez pinned Mike Comunale to extend the lead out to 15-6. Rodrigues, Koepke, Lee, and Black combined for 16 points to seal the 31-9 victory over Drexel.

In their final dual meet of the day, The Illini came back from a 9-5 deficit to defeat No. 25 Princeton XX-XX at the New York Athletic Club. After dropping three of the four bouts to start the match, Isaiah Martinez turned the tide with a 19-4 technical fall. Veterans Rodrigues, Brunson, and Koepke combined for 10 points to pull away from the Tigers 20-9. Princeton won two decisions to end the match, but the Illini came away victorious 20-15.

“Princeton is a very solid team and we knew they would be our biggest challenge today,” explained Heffernan.  “We need to work in a lot of things still.  We got beat to the punch in a few matches and didn’t do anywhere enough offense in some other matches when we were behind.”

Cowboys Bury the Gophers, 20-17

STILLWATER – No. 4 Oklahoma State wrestling notched its second win of the weekend, defeating No. 18 Minnesota, 20-17, in its home opener at Gallagher-Iba Arena on Sunday.

The Cowboys and Golden Gophers split the dual, winning five matches each. It was the Cowboys’ two bonus-point wins coming at critical times that lifted the Pokes to their first win over the Gophers since 2012.

“In tough matches bonus points are always the key, like when (Alex) Dieringer went out and got the tech. Then, I liked the way (Kyle) Crutchmer started his match in on the legs, and came back late in the first period with a lateral drop,” coach John Smith said. “I think the more exciting thing is once you put people to their back, hold them there, and get the pin. That’s what he did in a time that we needed him.”

Fifth-ranked Eddie Klimara went 2-0 on the weekend as he started Sunday’s dual with a win for the Pokes with an 8-2 decision over Skyler Petry. The Cowboy recorded three takedowns to separate himself from the Gopher and give OSU a 3-0 lead.

Minnesota picked up a major decision at 133 pounds, swinging the team score in favor of the Golden Gophers, 4-3.

At 141 pounds, Dean Heil came out victorious in a top-10 matchup. Ranked No. 1 in the nation, Heil took out No. 9 Tommy Thorn in a 7-3 decision, picking up three takedowns and an escape. Heil improves to 6-0 on the season.

“It was a good match,” Heil said. “A lot of people were hyping up the match, but every match is the same in my opinion. Whether he’s ranked or not, or how high or low. It felt good to get the win.”

The Cowboys dropped a heartbreaker at 149 pounds as Minnesota’s Jake Short edged out No. 8 Anthony Collica, 2-1. Each wrestler tallied an escape to tie the score 2-2 in the third period. Collica called an injury timeout after an attempt at a takedown, giving Short the option to take the bottom position and score an escape with less than 30 seconds left to knock off the Cowboy, 2-1.

Minnesota picked up another decision at 157 pounds to give Minnesota a 10-6 lead.

Two consecutive bonus-point wins from the Cowboys gave them a lead that they maintained throughout the dual.

Alex Dieringer was on the mat for 4:13, before ending his match in an 18-1 technical fall and adding five points to the team score. No. 1 Dieringer picked up three takedowns and three four-point nearfalls, while giving up only one point to Minnesota’s Brandon Krone at 165 pounds.

Kyle Crutchmer added to the Cowboys’ comeback effort as he was ready to go at the whistle. Late in the first period, Crutchmer hit a huge lateral drop that put Jordan Rothers to his back and seconds later was awarded the pin.

“I think that’s the first pin I’ve ever had in Gallagher,” Crutchmer said. “It was exciting and I want to do anything I can to help this team win. Being behind Alex (Dieringer) is nice and helps a lot. Sometimes you just train so hard that good things happen.”

Winning the final bout for the Pokes was Nolan Boyd at 184 pounds, who defeated Chris Pfarr, 4-1. Boyd notched the loan takedown of the match in the first period and rode out the Gopher for the remainder of the period. Boyd only gave up an escape, which was in the third period.

Jordan Rogers got the nod at 197 pounds and faced No. 6 Brett Pfarr. The Cowboy fell in a major decision, 16-5.

With the Cowboys leading 20-14, the dual came down to heavyweight, where Austin Schafer was bumped up to go head to head with No. 9 Michael Kroells. The Cowboy, who gave up 65 pounds to the Gopher, fought off Kroells and picked up a takedown in the third period, but it was not enough as Schafer dropped an 8-3 match; however, the Oklahoma State went on to win the dual 20-17.

The Cowboys return to Gallagher-Iba Arena on Dec. 6 to face No. 8 North Carolina State at 2 p.m.

Hawkeyes Finish Strong, Dominate Iowa State

Second-ranked Iowa wins 12th in a row against Iowa State, 33-6,

AMES, Iowa — The second-ranked University of Iowa wrestling team defeated No. 17 Iowa State, 33-6, on Sunday afternoon at Hilton Coliseum in the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series.

The Hawkeyes dominated the top position and overcame a slow start to win for the 12th consecutive time in the series and retain possession of the Dan Gable Traveling Trophy.

The Hawkeyes dominated the home team in the final five bouts, scoring 26 of the final 28 takedowns and closing the dual with five straight wins, including two major decisions and two falls.

Sammy Brooks built a 22-8 lead before turning Dane Pestano at 6:45 for his third fall of the season at 184, and Sam Stoll made his Cy-Hawk debut with a pin in 3:30 against Quean Smith at 285.

Nathan Burak totaled nine takedowns in his 22-8 dismantling of Duke Egli at 197, and Thomas Gilman, typically Iowa’s leadoff man, closed the dual with a 12-3 major decision against Kyle Larson at 125.

That action happened on the heels of a first half that saw Iowa State hold an 8-5 advantage in takedowns. UI head coach Tom Brands said there were no philosophical changes made at the break, but rather the usual narrative.

“You get to the first takedown and you get to the point where your third period is stronger quicker,” Brands said. “That’s where you really start to control matches. We have to use the first period and a good philosophy there is when a guy’s done with the first period he feels like he’s been through an entire match, and that doesn’t happen by just going through the first period.

“You have to work hard and it’s not easy to do. There’s no shortcut to get to guys in the first period. You have to realize it’s hard work and you have to buy into it. The other thing is you don’t stay stagnant either, so you have to give these guys some credit.”

The Hawkeyes wrestled 19 minutes before scoring their first takedown. The dual was tied 3-3 when Brandon Sorensen got to the legs of 15th-ranked Gabe Moreno in the third period at 149. Sorensen piled on three takedowns in the final 1:24 and used two nearfall points to win, 11-3.

It was Iowa’s second of three wins against top 20 wrestlers. Fourth-ranked Alex Meyer scored a pair of takedowns and rode No. 13 Lelund Weatherspoon for three and one-half minutes to win 7-1 at 174, and second-ranked Cory Clark opened the dual with a 9-2 win against No. 7 Earl Hall at 133.

It was Clark’s fifth win in five career meetings with Hall, and this one came without a takedown. Clark trailed 2-0 in the opening minute before scoring the final nine points with a pair of escapes and six nearfall points.

“You have to realize that this is a style that we’re going to see a lot,” said Brands. “Guys are holding points and working hard to stay in the center of the mat, so it’s not something where you can go out there and let your opponent dictate the pace. That was an issue.”

Iowa led 10-6 at intermission behind Clark, Sorensen, and Edwin Cooper, Jr.’s 6-2 win at 157. Iowa State’s only victories were decisions at 141 and 165. Logan Ryan lost 6-1 to Dante Rodriguez, and Patrick Rhoads fell 10-9 to No. 11 Tanner Weatherman at 165.

“It seems like the theme here is we were slow starters for the first five weights, but give these guys credit for outscoring heavy in the third period,” Brands said. “We want to own the third period. We want to own the second period. We want to own the first period. We’re greedy.”

The Hawkeyes return to the mat Friday, Dec. 4 at 7 p.m. (CT) when South Dakota State visits Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Tickets are available at the UI Athletics Tickets over the phone at 800-IA-HAWKS or online at hawkeyesports.com.

NOTES: Attendance was 5,612… Iowa retains possession of the Dan Gable Trophy… the Hawkeyes have won 12 straight in the series, including the last six meetings since the inception of the traveling trophy… Tom Brands is 11-0 against the Cyclones… Iowa owns a 9-4 advantage in the 2015-16 Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series.

Cowboys Hang on to Edge Gophers, 20-17

With Minnesota and Oklahoma State splitting 10 matches, bonus points made the difference in Sunday’s result

The 21st-ranked Gophers headed to Stillwater this weekend, where No. 3 Oklahoma State waited at Gallagher-Iba Arena to renew what has become one of the nation’s most-celebrated non-conference wrestling rivalries. Minnesota looked tough against the favored Cowboys on Sunday, splitting the meet’s 10 matches and scoring consecutive upsets at 149 and 157 pounds, but bonus points in back-to-back bouts later in the dual made the difference as OSU held on to defeat Minnesota, 20-17. The Gophers are now 4-4 after wrestling a program-record eight duals this November.

The Gophers built a 10-6 lead midway through the dual, powered by a major decision from Sam Brancale at 133 pounds and consecutive upsets from Jake Short and Brandon Kingsley. Short’s 2-1 victory over No. 8 Anthony Collica and Kingsley’s 3-2 decision over No. 14 Chance Marstellar were the first victories over ranked opponents for both wrestlers this season.

In Short’s case, Sunday’s win also marked his first dual match of the season after missing several weeks with an injury suffered at the season-opening Daktronics Open. Coincidentally, injuries played a role in his match with Collica on Sunday. With the score tied at one and less than 30 seconds remaining, Collica had to request injury time for what appeared to be an ankle issue. Following that timeout, Short was awarded his choice of position, giving him the opportunity to score a late escape and take the match.

Following those upsets, Oklahoma State sent its two highest-ranked wrestlers to compete in the next two matches, and both backed up their national rankings with strong performances. First, two-time defending NCAA champion and the nation’s top-ranked 165-pounder, Alex Dieringer, defeated Brandon Krone by technical fall. It was a tough draw for Krone, who was making his career dual debut on Sunday afternoon, becoming the sixth Gopher to do so in the team’s first eight duals this season. In the next contest, No. 3 Kyle Crutchmer turned a big lateral drop into a pin against Jordon Rothers in the closing seconds of the first period. Those results, and the five combined bonus points they produced, turned a 10-6 Gopher lead into a 17-10 deficit, a gap that ultimately proved too much to overcome.

Following a 4-1 decision for Nolan Boyd over Chris Pfarr at 184, which gave the Pokes a 20-10 lead, No. 6 Brett Pfarr and No. 9 Michael Kroells earned a major decision and a decision, respectively, taking a significant bite out of the OK State lead but leaving the Gophers a few points short of the victory.

Kroells was scheduled to take part in one of the afternoon’s two headline matches against No. 4 Austin Marsden but, following a flagrant misconduct call during Oklahoma State’s dual on Friday night, Marsden was ineligible for Sunday’s dual. Kroells instead wrestled Austin Schafer and took a 7-3 decision.

The other premier match went on as scheduled, with No. 9 Tommy Thorn challenging No. 1 Dean Heil at 141. Thorn wrestled tough against Heil, but dropped his third match of the season, a 7-3 decision. All three of Thorn’s losses have come by decision against opponents ranked in the top-five nationally.

Sunday’s defeat snapped the Gophers’ three-match winning streak in their series against the Cowboys, though Minnesota has still won four of the last six. Sunday was also the first time Oklahoma State knocked off Minnesota in Stillwater since the 2011-12 season. The three-point margin made the dual the third straight between the two teams settled by four points or fewer.

Minnesota will take a brief break from its dual schedule this week to defend its title against a nationally elite field at the Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas, Nev. The two-day tournament will begin this Friday and wrap up on Saturday.

Wrestling Defeats No. 20 Northwestern, Falls to No. 12 Illinois at Grapple at the Garden

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Drexel wrestling team earned its first win over a nationally ranked team this season as it defeated No. 20 Northwestern by criteria, 21-20. Matthew Cimato was awarded Outstanding Wrestler honors after he defeated both the top-ranked 149 pounder in the country in Jason Tsirtsis of Northwestern and No. 19 Kyle Langenderfer of Illinois. Drexel edged the Wildcats in its first dual of the day at the fourth-annual Grapple at the Garden before losing its second matchup to No. 12 Illinois by a margin of 31-9.

With his wins, Cimato improved his individual record to a team-leading 16-2. The redshirt junior has five technical falls, three major decisions and one pin thus far on the season and is a perfect 7-0 in dual meet competition.

Zack Fuentes got things started off for the Dragons against Northwestern with a 4-3 decision over Garrison White. In the 133 match, the Wildcats tied things up as Dominick Malone defeated David Pearce, 10-3. Then at 141, Northwestern’s Jameson Oster earned a pin over Kevin Devoy Jr. to put the Wildcats ahead, 9-3.

Cimato, who was ranked 15th in the nation coming into Sunday’s competition, upset the top-ranked Tsirtsis who was the NCAA Champion at 149 pounds two years ago. Cimato earned a 7-1 victory over the two-time All-American to cut Northwestern’s lead to 9-6. The Wildcats would pull away again, though, as they won the next three consecutive matches to go ahead, 20-6 with only three matches remaining.

The Dragons, however, began to stage a comeback as Stephen Loiseau earned a technical fall over Regis Durbin at 184. Nezar Haddad won by forfeit at 197 to bring Drexel within three points again, 20-17, which left it up to Joey Goodhart to tie things up in the heavyweight match. Goodhart went on to win by a 4-1 decision to knot the team score up at 20-20 and Drexel ultimately was awarded the victory as they won by criteria on the basis of having the most bout points.

In the Dragons’ second dual of the day, Fuentes again started Drexel off with a win in the 125 match but then Illinois’ No. 11 Zane Richards earned a major decision over David Pearce at 133 to put the Fighting Illini ahead, 4-3. A technical fall from Brock Ervin at 141 increased Illinois’ lead to 9-3, but then Cimato’s second win of the day cut the Fighting Illini’s lead to just three points.

Illinois would begin to pull away starting with the 157 match, in which the top-ranked Isaiah Martinez defeated Michael Comunale by fall and then added to its lead at 165 as No. 16 Steven Rodrigues earned a major decision over Austin Rose. Nick Elmer added to Drexel’s points with a 7-3 win over Emory Parker at 174, but then an injury default from Loiseau at 184 would halt any chance Drexel had of staging another comeback. Illinois earned decisions in the final two matches to secure a 31-9 victory.

The Dragons, who move to 3-4 in dual meets, return to action on Dec. 5 when they will travel to College Park to face Maryland at 5 p.m. in Drexel’s final competition of the 2015 calendar year.

No. 14 WRES Takes Down No. 7 Cornell, 21-13

Scarlet Knights go 2-0 at 2015 “Grapple at the Garden”

NEW YORK, N.Y. (Nov. 29, 2015) – The score clock showed a two-point deficit entering the final period at 125 pounds as redshirt sophomore Sean McCabe (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) took his place in the defensive position.

Two minutes and two takedowns later, McCabe had his hand raised in an upset win against No. 18 Dalton Macri, and by dual’s end the Scarlet Knights had another ranked win, this one over No. 7 Cornell, 21-13, to close the 2015 “Grapple at the Garden.”

Rutgers (9-1) took six of 10 bouts from the Big Red (1-2) for their first win over Cornell since Jan. 31, 1998.

“Duals are important to me and duals are important to this staff,” said head coach Scott Goodale. “We want to wrestle the best teams, we want to go to different environments, and we want to wrestle programs like Cornell. It’s important to wrestle these big matches. There’s a long way to go, we’ve just got to keep getting better.”

Cornell scored victories from its ranked wrestlers at 133, 174, and 184 pounds after dropping the 125-pound match. No. 4 Nahshon Garrrett won a 6-1 decision over No. 17 Anthony Giraldo (Guttenberg, N.J.), No. 2 Brian Realbuto topped Phillip Bakuckas (Hammonton, N.J.), 6-1, and No. 1 Gabe Dean outlasted Nicholas Gravina (Allendale, N.J.) for a key 13-5 major decision.

But the rest of the RU lineup picked up the slack, beginning with No. 3 Anthony Ashnault (South Plainfield, N.J.) at 141 pounds. Already with an 8-2 lead entering the third, Ashnault finished his day with his second fall in 5:14 against Dylan Realbuto.

Tyson Dippery (Harrisburg, Pa.) secured a crucial decision at 149 pounds by escaping the grasp of Joseph Galasso in the third period and hanging on for a 5-4 win. Dippery improved to 7-3 this season.

A loss at 157 pounds to John Van Brill (Mullica Hill, N.J.) cut the RU lead to 12-6, turning the attention to a ranked showdown at 165 pounds.

Once again, No. 9 Anthony Perrotti (Roseland, N.J.) made his presence felt. His 6-2 decision against No. 10 Duke Pickett improves his resume to 3-1 against ranked opposition this season, and bumps his record to 8-1 overall.

Wins by Cornell in the next two bouts shifted the pressure back to RU’s side of the mat, making the team score 15-13 with two matches to go.

Hayden Hrymack (Point Pleasant, N.J.) answered the bell, grinding out a 10-7 decision at 197 pounds to all but seal the dual. With an 8-4 lead entering the third, Hrymack succumbed to an escape and takedown to cut his lead to 8-7 in a hurry.

But Hrymack (7-3) stayed composed and escaped Scott’s grasp, securing riding time for the three point win.

With Cornell needing a fall at heavyweight to win the dual due to Ashnault’s pin earlier in the match, RU’s Billy Smith (Wantage, N.J.) left no doubt the Scarlet Knights would prevail.

Smith (8-2) coasted to an 8-1 decision against Jeramy Sweany, giving Rutgers its first top-10 win and fourth overall against ranked opposition this season.

“It validates what we’re doing is right” Goodale said. “The way we’re training, the way these guys are buying in, the way these guys believe – it validates all of that. But it doesn’t mean anything unless we go to Iowa City and wrestle well. So we’ve got to keep working, keep knocking off ranked opponents, and that’s what it’s all about for us.”

In the first match of the day against George Mason, Rutgers used nine bonus-point victories in a 47-0 performance under the MSG lights.

McCabe (6-3), Ashnault (9-0), and Gravina (7-2) won by fall in their matches against the Patriots, with Giraldo (7-3) and Dippery winning by tech fall. Van Brill (6-4), Perrotti, Bakuckas (5-3), and Smith all secured major decisions.

The “Grapple at the Garden” sweep sets up a Big Ten showdown at No. 2 (6-0) Iowa in Iowa City on Dec. 10. The Scarlet Knights open up their home Big Ten schedule with a 1 p.m. match on Sunday, Dec. 12 against No. 5 Nebraska (6-0) at the RAC.

Terps Push Past Hofstra in NYC

Hodges picks up two victories at Grapple at the Garden

NEW YORK CITY – Redshirt senior Lou Mascola and freshman Wade Hodges earned back-to-back wins to lead the Maryland wrestling team past Hofstra, 24-13, at the Grapple at the Garden in Madison Square Garden Sunday afternoon.

The Terrapins (2-4, 0-1 Big Ten) finished the day on a high note with a comfortable win over the Pride. Hodges also won his match against Illinois lead Maryland.

Sophomore Jhared Simmons gave the Terps a 3-0 lead after a decision win at 125 pounds over Bryan Damon. After a scoreless opening period, Simmons easily reversed to nab a 2-0 lead in the second. A takedown in the final period punctuated a 5-0 win.

Hodges put together a spectacular performance that ended with a pin in the opening period. After controlling the action and securing a quick takedown, Hodges expertly turned Ryan Burkert on his back for the fall at 2:25.

At 157 pounds, Mascola started strong against Jahlani Callender, taking a 6-3 lead into the final period before holding on for an 8-6 win. Freshman Brendan Burnham put together another solid showing at 165, defeating Bobby Fehr, 4-2.

Redshirt freshman Garrett Wesneski used an escape in the third period to give Maryland a 24-9 lead after nine matches. The Terrapins also picked up a forfeit at 133 pounds while Alfred Bannister dropped a razor thin decision at 141 pounds to No. 16 Jamel Hudson.

Maryland faced Illinois in its first dual of the day and fell, 34-9. Hodges and fellow true freshman Jaron Smith picked up the victories for the Terps.

Simmons started the contest and fell 8-6 after a late takedown from Francis Edelen. Bannister dropped a close 3-2 decision to Brock Ervin in a match that saw the redshirt freshman control most of the action on the feet.

Hodges got the Terps on the board against No. 19 Kyle Langenderfer. After an uneventful first period, Hodges started the second period on top and built up 1:50 of riding time, while also earning a stall point. Hodges escaped at the beginning of the third period and stayed on his feet till the finish to earn the riding time point and the match, 3-1.

Smith made his dual-match debut at 184 pounds and stunned No. 18 Jeff Koepke with a pin in the second period. After a competitive opening frame, Smith took advantage of a Koepke mistake and turned it into a flash pin at 3:22.

Freshman Youssif Hemida also made his debut at heavyweight and wrestled well in a 6-1 loss to No. 14 Brooks Black.

NU WRESTLING: Northwestern Splits Pair of Matches at Grapple at the Garden
NEW YORK CITY – Northwestern wrestling opened up the 2015-16 dual season by splitting a pair of matches at the fourth annual Grapple at the Garden in New York City on Sunday.
The Wildcats beat Franklin & Marshall in the second dual of the day by a 30-18 score with pins by Dominick Malone, Bryce Brill and Luke Norland. Garrison White, Mitch Sliga and Regis Durbin were also winners in the dual for Northwestern.
“The guys showed a lot of promise,” interim head coach Matt Storniolo said. “It was nice seeing a few guys go 2-0. We learned a lot about our team today and will be better in the long run for competing in this event.
Brill was nothing short of dominant on Sunday, also picking up a tech fall in the first match of the day to go with his pin. He won by fall over Andy Francos in just 50 seconds. Brill started the day with an 18-2 tech fall of Drexel’s Richard Viruet.
Luke Norland won the first two matches of his Northwestern career, coming from behind to win in each. In his first match against Drexel’s Austin Rose, Norland trailed 6-1 but fought all the way back to win an 8-6 decision in sudden victory. He erased a 4-2 deficit vs. Gordon Bolig of Franklin and Marshall and won by fall to help put the Wildcats securely ahead in the dual.
“Winning my first two matches representing Northwestern in a world renowned arena was awesome,” Norland said. “It was a fantastic beginning to my career, but I know I have a lot of room where I can and will improve.
Malone was also undefeated on Sunday, winning by fall against Franklin and Marshall’s Scott Stevens in just 56 seconds a match after a convincing 10-3 win over David Pearce of Drexel.
Northwestern dropped the first dual of the day to Drexel after a 20-20 tie left the decision up to criteria. The officials had to go deep into the tiebreak scenarios to pick a winner, ultimately giving the Dragons the victory based on a 46-44 advantage on individual match points.
Chicago’s Big Ten Team is right back out to the east coast next weekend with matches at Princeton and Rider on Dec. 5. The Wildcats wrestle Princeton at 10 a.m. and Rider at 2 p.m.

Butler and Miklus Vault @MizzouWrestling to 24-19 Win Over UNI

#TigerStyle win gives Mizzou its 30th straight dual competition win

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Two falls from redshirt senior 174-pounder Blaise Butler (Belvidere, Ill.) and redshirt sophomore 184-pounder Willie Miklus (Altoona, Iowa) gave No. 9 Mizzou Wrestling the lead it needed to defeat No. 25 Northern Iowa on Saturday by a score of 24-19. Heading into the 174-pound match, the Tigers trailed the Panthers 14-9, but the two pins gave Mizzou a 21-14 lead, one it would not relinquish again. The win marked the 30th consecutive dual victory for the Tigers.

Redshirt junior 133-pounder Zach Synon (Cary, Ill.) picked up the first win of the night for Mizzou, besting Josh Alber by a score a 2-1. The match was 1-1 as time expired, but Synon was awarded a second point from riding time. The 2-1 decision tied the match score at 3-3. The win started a run for Mizzou, who took the next two matches by way of decision. First, redshirt junior 141-pounder Matt Manley (Perry, Okla.), defeated Trevor Jauch, 4-3. Then, redshirt junior 149-pounder Lavion Mayes (Mascoutah, Ill.) beat Gunnar Wolfensperger by a score of 9-3 to give Mizzou a 9-3 lead in the dual.

After Northern Iowa tied the score, 9-9, with a fall in the 157-pound matchup and grabbed the lead with a technical fall in the 165-pound matchup, 14-9, Butler regained the lead for the Tigers with his pin in the third period (6:37) over Kyle Lux. In his first match as a Tiger after transferring from Virginia, Butler came away with a massive debut win for #Tigerstyle. Butler led 14-4 in the third period when he put both of Lux’s shoulders on the mat for six points.

Miklus followed up the Butler pin with one of his own, pinning Cody Caldwell in the first period (1:22). Wrestling in front of family and friends, Miklus looked up into the stands following the win to acknowledge those who made the short drive to support him.

Junior 197-pounder J’den Cox (Columbia, Mo.) picked up the final win of the night for #Tigerstyle when he beat Jared Bartel by way of decision, 8-3. The win gave Mizzou three points and clinched the victory.

Mizzou will next send wrestlers to Las Vegas, Nev. to compete in the Las Vegas Invitational Dec. 4. The next dual competition for #Tigerstyle will be the home-opener contest against Ohio State on Friday, Dec. 12.

Wolverines overcome deficit to defeat Boise State, 22-12
Nov. 28, 2015
OREM, Utah – Despite trailing Boise State 12-8 after six matches, the Utah Valley University wrestling team managed to win the final four bouts of the dual to defeat the Pac-12 Broncos by a score of 22-12 in UVU’s 2015-16 home opener on Saturday in front of 1,789 fans.

Senior Ross Taylor started the late rally for the Wolverines (3-3, 0-0 Big 12) with a 3-2 decision at 174 pounds. Redshirt freshman Will Sumner then followed with a 6-2 victory at 184, while nineteenth-ranked Derek Thomas (197) picked up a 16-0 technical fall and redshirt sophomore Dustin Dennison (heavyweight) capped the contest with an 8-4 decision.

“I was pleased with the outcome today. I liked what I saw and felt like our guys came out fighting in every match,” head coach Greg Williams said. “There are a couple of little things that some of the guys need to work on to win their individual matches, however, and that will continue to help the team outcome.”

The eighth-ranked senior Chasen Tolbert (6-0) got the Wolverines off to a strong start with a 14-0 major decision victory over Rami Haddadin (6-2) in the opening match of the contest at 125 pounds. Tolbert controlled the bout from start to finish, including an eight-point opening period and 3:33 of riding time at the end of the contest, en route to the victory.

Fellow senior Jade Rauser (3-2), who is just outside the InterMat rankings and currently rated 16th at 133 pounds by FloWrestling, then followed Tolbert’s major decision with a major decision of his own by defeating Boise State’s Josh Newberg (7-6) by a score of 14-1. Up 7-1 entering the final stanza, the Utah Valley three-time NCAA qualifier made his move with a takedown, a four-point nearfall and an additional riding time point to take the bout by major decision.

Boise State (2-2, 1-0 Pac-12) then bounced back with four straight wins in four tightly contested matches to take a 12-8 lead of its own in the contest. During the BSU winning streak, Wolverine sophomore Matthew Ontiveros nearly managed to upset No. 18 Geo Martinez in the 149-pound contest but the nationally ranked Martinez managed to escape with a 6-5 victory thanks to a last-second escape.

Utah Valley’s Taylor (4-2) then put an end to the streak with his hard fought 3-2 decision victory at 174 pounds. With the match all knotted up at 2-2 entering the final frame, Taylor managed to ride out Boise State’s Austin Dewey (7-6) to pickup an additional riding time point and seal the bout.

Sumner (2-4) then followed Taylor’s win with 6-2 decision of his own to give the Wolverines a 14-12 advantage in the team score. The newly nationally ranked Thomas (6-0) then managed to remain undefeated on the season with a decisive 16-0 tech fall over BSU’s Zack Coffman. Thomas recorded a pair of four-point nearfalls as well as a two-point nearfall on his way to the five-minute and four-second (5:04) technical fall victory.

With the dual all sealed up thanks to a 19-12 advantage heading into the heavyweight contest, Dennison (3-3) didn’t let down in the final match for the Wolverines as he recorded three takedowns en route to his 8-4 win.

“All three captains (Chasen TolbertJade Rauser and Derek Thomas) came out and did what they needed to do to just dominate their matches,” Williams added. “I seriously was pleased with the effort from every single one of our guys today. I feel like they believe in themselves and the work that they are doing in the room is paying off.”

In all, UVU won six of the 10 matches on the evening including three by bonus points to pickup its fourth all-time win over the Broncos.

The contest not only marked UVU’s first home match as a member of the Big 12 Conference but also its first while receiving votes for the top-25 poll, as it is currently picked up two votes for this week’s USA Today/NWCA Coaches Poll for the first time in program history.

The Wolverines will now step out of dual action for the first time of the season to compete at a pair of tournaments in the month of December. UVU will first head to Las Vegas for the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational next weekend (Dec. 4-5) before closing the month at the Reno Tournament of Champions on Dec 20.

#9 Missouri vs. #25 UNI

Nov. 28, 2015

Attendance: 2,100 (sold out)

Officials: Curt Frost and Rick Stahl

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – UNI dropped its first dual to No. 9 Missouri, 24-19, in front of a sold-out crowd at home tonight.

“When you have a packed house, you need to put on a show and get those people eager to come back the next time,” said head coach Doug Schwab. “We need to give ourselves some more opportunities.”

UNI falls to 1-3 in duals and 0-1 in the MAC. Missouri stays undefeated with their first MAC win, 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the MAC.

Dylan Peters got the Panthers rolling with a 7-5 decision at 125 pounds to stay undefeated on the season. He beat No. 13 Barlow McGhee, 7-5.  Peters, a junior, has started every season with at least 9 wins before his first loss.

Riding time gave Mizzou’s Zach Synon the point he needed to get the 2-1 decision over UNI’s Josh Alber, who just broke into the top-20 rankings.

Mizzou would go on to take the next two before UNI’s Bryce Steiert would tie things up for the Panthers. His 3:32 fall over Luke Fortuna made the team score 9-9. It was the first collegiate fall for the true freshman.

“I loved the pace Steiert wrestled,” said Schwab. “That was three minutes of extreme, break-neck pace, and that’s how you have to crack a guy open.”

No. 3 Cooper Moore made his season debut with a tech fall over Nick DeLoach to push the Panthers up 14-9.

“Some of our guys came out smelling blood, and they went out and got bonus points,” said Schwab.

Mizzou got falls at 174 pounds and 184 pounds.

Jared Bartel was the first to strike at 197 pounds. He had a takedown early in the first period to lead former NCAA champion No. 2 J’Den Cox, but Cox would get the 7-2 decision.

UNI fell too far behind for No. 6 Blaize Cabell to take the lead back, but his tech fall narrowed the gap. He notched 12 takedowns to win 25-10.

“We have to lick our wounds really quick, because you don’t have much time to sit down and hang your head about this,” said Schwab. “We do have to get ready for Las Vegas. It’s a huge event. It’s our last big event before Christmas. We are not going to dwell on this, but this will burn.”

NEXT UP

The Panthers will head out to the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invite Dec. 4-5. They return home for the UNI Open in the UNI-Dome Dec. 12.

“Next week is a huge opportunity for these guys,” said Schwab. “That’s a big, big event for our guys. It’s a way to make yourself nationally known and put yourself as one of the best guys in the country.”

UBJECT: Wilmington Women’s Basketball Fights Back to Force Overtime but West Virginia Wesleyan Secures 88-86 Victory
DATE: November 28, 2015
djl
BUCKHANNON, W. Va. – – Trailing by 11 points at the halftime break, the Wilmington University women’s basketball team made a late game charge, forcing the game into overtime before West Virginia Wesleyan pulled it out, 88-86, on Saturday afternoon.
The Wildcats (4-2) had an opportunity at the end of overtime to tie of take the lead, but Ebonee Dixon’s reverse layup was off the mark, and the Wildcats couldn’t get a final shot off in the final 1.6 seconds.
The Bobcats (1-3) led by as many as 13 points in the first half, outscoring the Wildcats, 27-15, in the second quarter to go into the halftime break with a 46-35 advantage. The Wildcats cut into the deficit with a 17-9 third quarter, and tied the match at the end of regulation by outscoring the Bobcats, 23-20, in the fourth quarter.
Tenicia Spence gave the Wildcats their first lead of the second half with a layup with 8:08 remaining in the fourth quarter. A pair from the foul line from Jocelyn Rodriguez put the Wildcats ahead, 65-59, before Lindsay Bradford kept the Bobcats at an arm’s reach with a layup, 69-63, with 3:42 to play.
Five straight points form the foul line for the Bobcats brought the home team back to within one with two minutes remaining, before a three-pointer tied the match at 71-71 with 1:39 left. Bradford put the Wildcats ahead once again, 73-71, with a pair from the foul line, but four straight from the foul line again for the Bobcats put the home team back on top, 75-73.
Zameria Jones drove to the bucket with less than 30 seconds left, but the ball rimmed out and into the hands of the Bobcats. But Jones kept with it, ripping the ball away on the rebound and converting the extra chance to tie the game, 75-75, with 19 seconds left in regulation. The defense then hung on as the Bobcats had a pair of opportunities to win the game at the other end, getting an offensive rebound and put back chance, both of which were off the mark.
Spence hit the first bucket of the overtime period before the Bobcats scored four-straight to retake a 79-77 advantage. Macy Robinson grabbed an offensive rebound and put back a layup to give the Wildcats an 81-80 lead with 1:25 to play, but back-to-back buckets by the Bobcats allowed the home team to regain the lead, 84-81, with 48 seconds on the clock.
Trailing by three out of a timeout, Spence nailed a three-pointer from the left corner, knotting the game at 86-86 with 12 seconds left in regulation. But the senior than fouled the Bobcats as they crossed the half court timeline, putting the home team back on the foul line. Alexa Szelong calmly sank the two free throws to put the Bobcats back on top.
Dixon drove the right lane and had a look at the bucket, going reverse to try and tie the game, but her effort was off the mark, going out of bounds off the Bobcats with 1.6 seconds left on the clock. The Wildcats inbounded the ball, but couldn’t get a shot off as time expired.
Spence led the Wildcats with 26 points, shooting 11-of-20 from the field, including 4-for-6 from deep. Robinson added 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting while grabbing a team high 11 rebounds for the double-double. Rodriguez scored 12 points and added eight rebounds while Jones chipped in with 12 points off the bench.
The Bobcats went 24-of-37 from the foul line for the game while the Wildcats shot 9-of-13 from the charity stripe.
The Wildcats remain on the road when they open Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play on Wednesday, December 2. The Wildcats head to Philadelphia to play the University of the Sciences, opening the CACC doubleheader at 6:00 p.m.

Goldey-Beacom crawled its way out of an early hole and then took charge in the second half for a 70-54 victory over Millersville at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

Down 15-0 in just inside the first seven minutes, the Lightning outscored the Marauders 21-6 the remainder of the first half to forge a 21-21 tie.  Junior Shakeem Wilson (Brooklyn, NY) scored six points during that span in which GBC shot 6-of-14 from the floor and limited Millersville to only 2-of-16 with 11 turnovers.

Goldey-Beacom Women’s Basketball Dealt 70-53 Setback at New Haven

A great offensive first quarter for Goldey-Beacom went down the tube as New Haven put on its own offensive clinic to hand the visitors a 70-53 loss in West Haven, CT.

GBC raced to a 20-10 lead in just over the first nine minutes by shooting 9-of-15 from the field with a pair of three-pointers.  Freshman Tanner Turner-Rush (Harrisburg, PA) continued her impressive start with seven points in that span and sophomore Britani Bryson (Hampton, VA) added six with three rebounds.

The Chargers then lived up to their nickname by scoring 25 consecutive points in just over seven minutes to grab a 35-20 lead with 2:59 left in the first half.  Alexandria Kerr scored eight points and Briana Bradford added six to help their squad shoot 10-of-16 in that run.

Kerr ended the first half with 12 points and Bradford netted 11 for New Haven, which opened a 35-24 lead by shooting 43 percent (15-of-35) from the floor with a 30-10 rebounding advantage.

100 Years of Greatness
Oklahoma State wrestling is celebrating 100 years of history this season. The Cowboys, then known as the Oklahoma A&M Tigers and led by A.M. Colville, wrestled their first match in 1915 against the University of Texas. It was a rough start for OSU as it fell to the Longhorns in its lone dual of the season. But the Cowboys pulled through and went on to win 34 NCAA team championships (the most by any school in any sport), 139 individual champions and 444 All-Americans. Overall, the Cowboys hold an incredibly impressive 1,066-124-23 overall record.

John Smith Enters 25th Year as OSU Head Coach
Not only did John Smith leave his legacy on Oklahoma State wrestling as a competitor, Smith continues to do so as he begins his 25th year as the head coach of the Cowboy wrestling team. In 1992, John Smith, along with Kenny Monday, took over as co-head coaches for the squad, and Smith took over on his own in 1993. Since taking over, Smith has led his squad to five NCAA team championships and 17 conference championships. He leads all active coaches in NCAA champions coached (29), and has also seen his wrestlers earn All-American honors 111 times. He is the Cowboys’ winningest coach with a 371-57-6 record entering the weekend.

In the Polls
Oklahoma State enters the weekend ranked No. 4 in the USA Today/NWCA/Division I Coaches Poll and No. 2 in the Intermat rankings. Minnesota is ranked No. 18 by USA Today/NWCA/Division I Coaches Poll and No. 23 in the Intermat rankings. SDSU is not ranked in either poll.

The Cowboys are the top-ranked team from the Big 12 in both the USA Today/NWCA/Division I Coaches Poll and the Intermat rankings.

Nine of the Cowboy’s potential starters are ranked among the top 20 in the nation at their respective weight classes in at least one poll, including a No. 1 rankings in all four polls for two-time national champion Alex Dieringer (165) and 2015 All-American Dean Heil (141). Kyle Crutchmer is ranked No. 2 at 174 pounds in three polls.

SDSU has two wrestlers ranked in the top 20 of their weight classes by Intermat, while Minnesota has three.

2015 Recap
The Oklahoma State wrestling team finished the 2014-15 season by producing an individual national champion in Alex Dieringer and three other All-Americans, as well as a Big 12 tournament title. The Cowboys turned in a 12-3 overall dual record and a perfect 3-0 conference record.

At the NCAA tournament, the Cowboys sent five to the quarterfinals, including Eddie Klimara (125), Dean Heil (141), Alex Dieringer (165), Kyle Crutchmer (174) and Austin Marsden (285). Dieringer came out on top, while Klimara, Heil and Crutchmer finished in the top eight.

The Pokes crowned seven Big 12 champions in Klimara, Heil, Dieringer, Crutchmer, Anthony Collica, Nolan Boyd and Austin Marsden.

Crutchmer Named Wrestler of the Week
Junior Kyle Crutchmer was honored as the Big 12 Wrestler of the Week for his performance during the week of Nov. 8-14. It was his first career conference weekly honor. Crutchmer won a crucial match in the Cowboys’ dual against Iowa to give the Cowboys a 13-10 lead. Crutchmer, ranked No. 4 in the nation, took on No. 6 Alex Meyer in a top-ten battle. With the bout coming down to the last seconds, Crutchmer scored a critical takedown that gave him the 11-10 win.

Historical Grapple on the Gridiron
Oklahoma State opened the season with a trip to Iowa City to take on the then-No.4 Hawkeyes in a dual that was tabbed as the Grapple on the Gridiron, which marked the first time in NCAA history two wrestling programs competed outside at a Division I football stadium. The dual shattered the NCAA dual attendance record, previously held by Penn State (15,996 vs. Pitt in 2013), with 42,287 tickets sold.

Dieringer’s Streak
Two-time NCAA champion Alex Dieringer is in the midst of a 53-match win streak, dating back to January 2014. Last season he compiled a perfect 33-0 overall record. Dieringer sits at eighth all-time for unbeaten streaks in program history. He is two wins away from passing Johny Hendrick’s 55-match win streak.

75 and Counting
Two Cowboy seniors start the season closing in on the 100-win club. Austin Marsden boasts 84 career wins, while Eddie Klimara sits at 83 wins.

Marsden earned his 75th win when he defeated AJ Vizcarrondo of West Virginia in the heavyweight finals of the Big 12 Championship, 7-0.

Klimara snatched his 75th win at the NCAA tournament when he scored 11 points on Ben Willeford of Cleveland State.

Crutchmer, Heil Compete at NWCA All-Star Classic
Returning All-Americans Kyle Crutchmer and Dean Heil were selected to compete in the NWCA All-Star Classic, which was held on Nov. 1 in Atlanta at Georgia Tech University.

Heil fell in the final seconds of a tight, high-scoring bout against 133-pound 2015 NCAA champion Cody Brewer, 13-12.

Crutchmer also fell in a close one, 2-1 to Zach Epperly of Virginia at 174 pounds.

Alex Dieringer was also invited to compete, but was not able to make it to the competition.

Look Who’s Back
Returning to the Cowboy lineup for the 2015-16 season is a two-time NCAA champion, four other All-Americans and seven Big 12 champions.

Senior Alex Dieringer earned his second NCAA individual title, this time at 165 pounds, during a flawless junior campaign that saw him go 33-0, pick up his 100th career win and his third Big 12 title.

Dean Heil, a sophomore for the Pokes, grabbed his first All-America honor after finishing fourth at the 2015 NCAA Championships. Kyle Crutchmer also received All-American status in 2015, when he finished fifth at the national tournament. In addition, the junior picked up a Big 12 title at 174 pounds. Eddie Klimara claimed All-American status last season, defeating Penn State’s Jordan Conaway in the seventh-place bout of the NCAA tourney. The final All-American is Austin Marsden, who finished eighth at nationals in 2014, but fell short of the podium in 2015.

NCAA qualifier and 2015 Big 12 champions Anthony Collica and Nolan Boyd are also notable returners for the Pokes.

All in the Family
This season’s squad features four sets of brothers and a father-son combo.

WOLVERINES WELCOME BOISE STATE TO TOWN FOR 2015-16 HOME OPENER
OREM, Utah – Following the Thanksgiving holiday, the Utah Valley University wrestling team will welcome Boise State to town for its 2015-16 home opener on Saturday, Nov. 28. The Big 12 vs. Pac-12 showdown will begin at 4 p.m. at UVU’s PE Building.

The Wolverines (2-3, 0-0 Big 12) will enter the contest fresh off of an upset win over the No. 18 Oregon State Beavers in Corvallis, Oregon last weekend. UVU and OSU both won five bouts apiece in the contest but the Wolverines managed to pull out three of theirs out by bonus points, including a six-point fall from senior 174-pounder Ross Taylor, to record just their second win over a nationally ranked opponent in program history.

By knocking off the 18th-ranked team in the nation last Saturday, Utah Valley is receiving votes for the USA Today/NWCA Top 25 Coaches Poll for the first time in program history. The Wolverines sit just outside of the top-25 with two votes by dropping the Pac-12 Beavers five spots in the rankings as Oregon State now finds itself ranked 23rd after losing to UVU on its home mat last weekend.

Besides the fall from the senior Taylor, Utah Valley also received big wins from fellow seniors Chasen Tolbert (125 pounds) and Derek Thomas (197) in the victory over OSU. The then 12th-ranked Tolbert managed to hold on to his lead down the stretch to defeat No. 10 Ronnie Bresser by a score of 4-3, while Thomas was dominant en route to a 10-1 major decision victory over No. 15 Cody Crawford. With the wins, Thomas now finds himself nationally ranked for the first time in the top-20 polls as he debuts at No. 19 at 197 pounds while Tolbert becomes just the third Wolverine in school history to move into the top-10 (Benjamin Kjar & Flint Ray) as he’ll enter Saturday’s dual ranked eighth in the nation at 125.

Tolbert and Thomas lead UVU on the season with identical unblemished 5-0 records, while Taylor is next with a 3-2 clip.

ABOUT THE OPPOSITION
The Boise State Broncos will come to town on the heels of a 22-21 criteria win over fellow Pac-12 foe Arizona State last Sunday. BSU is 2-1 overall and 1-0 in Pac-12 action after recording the tie-breaking win over ASU in Tempe, Arizona last weekend. The Broncos also hold a victory over Midland on the season while their lone setback came to No. 15 Iowa State in Ames, Iowa on Nov. 12.

The 18th-ranked 149-pound sophomore Geordan Martinez leads the Broncos with a 7-3 record on the season while 125-pound junior Rami Haddadin is right behind him at 6-1.

Saturday’s dual will mark the 10th all-time meeting between UVU and BSU. Boise State holds a 6-3 all-time series advantage, but one of the Wolverines’ three victories was when Boise State was ranked eighth in the nation on Feb. 5, 2010 in Orem.

UP NEXT FOR UVU
Utah Valley will take a break from dual competition to take part at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational on Dec. 4-5 at the Cashman Center in Las Vegas. Following the CKLV Invite, the Wolverines will continue tournament action at the Reno Tournament of Champions on Dec. 20 in Reno, Nevada.

CHESTER, Pa. – The Wesley College women’s basketball took an early lead, but could not hang onto it as they fell 73-55 to Widener University in a non-conference tilt on Tuesday evening.

Brittney Kerns and Alexus Stroud paced the Wesley offense with 13 points apiece, while Brionna Johnson earned her third straight double-double with 11 points and 11 boards. Monshea Newsome-Murray was held to just two points on the night, but led the team with five assists and four steals.

The Wolverines shot 33.3% on the evening, hitting 19-of-57 attempts while Widener shot 37.7% for the game. The Wesley squad forced their opponent into 18 turnovers, but were outrebounded 51-33 on the night.

Wesley got out to a fast start, outscoring the Pride 12-2 in the opening minutes. Brittney Kerns, Tiyanna Gibbs, Alexus Stroud, and Brionna Johnson each drilled a three-pointer to start the Wolverines off on the right foot. The Navy and White finished the first quarter with a 16-7 lead.

The Wolverines battled to maintain their lead in the second quarter, withstanding a cold shooting streak while the Pride shot 7-for-15 in the quarter. Wesley saw their lead slip away, but an Alexus Stroud layup in the final minute gave the team a 30-28 lead at the half.

In the third quarter, Widener immediately jumped out to a lead, opening the frame with a 14-1 run. The Wolverines were outscored 20-7 in the third and were never able to recover. The Pride continued to pour on the offense in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Wolverines 25-18 to earn the 73-55 win.

Wesley moves to 1-3 on the season and will take off for the Thanksgiving break. The Wolverines will return to action on Sunday, November 29 when they play host to Arcadia University in another non-conference battle.

SUBJECT: Griffin’s Career High, Ponzo-Meek’s Magic Lifts Wilmington Men’s Basketball to 81-78 Comeback Victory at Bloomsburg
DATE November 24, 2015
djl
BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – – It was a tale of two halves for the Wilmington University men’s basketball team, but it was a familiar face that down the stretch that powered the Wildcats past Bloomsburg, 81-78, on Tuesday night inside Nelson Field House.
It was the big men, and particularly Ta’Vaune Griffin, that led the Wildcats (4-1) in the first half before the guards took over in the second half. Bloomsburg (3-2) held as large as an eight-point lead in the second half before yet another late game Wilmington comeback.
Despite a career game and outstanding first half from Griffin (career high 22 points and career high tying 16 rebounds), the Wildcats still went into the halftime break down 39-35. Griffin scored 16 of his points and grabbed eight rebounds in the first half alone while shooting 7-of-9 from the floor. The Wildcats led 25-24 with 5:02 left to play, but the Huskies used runs of 7-2 and 6-0 to lead 37-29 with 2:30 left.
It seemed as though the Wildcats gained some of the momentum back at the end of the half with back-to-back layups from Griffin, but the Huskies were able to go the length of the court in six seconds and lay one home at the buzzer for the 39-35 lead.
The Huskies held the Wildcats two leading scorers in Tyaire Ponzo-Meek and Brian Adkins to a combined eight points in the first half, but the duo wouldn’t be held down in the second half, which is starting to be a familiar scene in the early part of this season.
The Wildcats fought their way back through the first portion of the second half to take a lead, 47-46, on a fast break dunk by Adkins. But the Huskies responded and eventually used its free throw shooting to take a 67-61 lead with 7:45 left. The Huskies scored six straight of their points from the line, and capped off the 8-2 run with a steal and layup to produce their largest lead of the game, 69-61 with 6:57 showing on the clock.
Omari Dill-Pettiford started a quick 5-0 run with a layup followed by a Griffin rebound and push ahead to Adkins for a three-point, cutting the deficit to 72-70 with 3:49 to play.
An offensive rebound and putback layup by Griffin brought the Wildcats all the way back to tie the game 73-73, before Ponzo-Meek layup put the visitors ahead, 75-74, with only 2:15 remaining in regulation.
Bloomsburg tied the game at 75 with a free throw before Ponzo-Meek tried a dagger shot with layup at 1:06 to play. But the Huskies were unfazed and nailed a three-pointer on the ensuing possession to retake a 78-77 lead.
Drawing the shotclock down, Ponzo-Meek got the ball back from the wing and drove to the rim, using the backboard to convert the runner with 22 seconds left, giving the Wildcats the lead, 79-78. Ponzo-Meek then grabbed the defensive rebound on the other end as the Huskies layup opportunity was off the mark with eight seconds to play. The junior hit both ends of his free throws to seal the victory.
Ponzo-Meek scored 20 of his team high 24 in the second half while Adkins scored 14 of his 18 points in the second stanza. Griffin was the final Wildcat in double digits with his 22.
Dill-Pettiford pulled in 12 rebounds off the bench while Paul Medlin helped defensively with four blocked shots.
The 4-1 start matches the best start to a season in program history, tying the 2011-12 team.
After five games on the road to start the season, the Wildcats return to the WU Athletics Complex for their 2015-16 home opener on Saturday. They welcome Arkansas Fort-Smith to Newark for a 1:00 p.m. start.

WR: No. 3 Ohio State Outlasts Cleveland State, 26-18
Ryan, Tomasello, Jordan score bonus point victories

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Jake Ryan’s technical fall at 157 pounds, the final match of the night, proved to the difference as Ohio State outlasted Cleveland State, 26-18, on Tuesday evening at Woodling Gymnasium. With the win, the third-ranked Buckeyes are now 3-0 on the season.

Ryan, who rose four spots this week in the InterMat rankings from No. 20 to No. 16, scored early and often in the first period with the dual meet result hanging in the balance. His quick takedown in the first period made it 2-0, and then a four-point near-fall and another take down gave him an 8-1 edge. He led 10-2 at the end of the opening three minutes and never looked back, racking up over a minute of riding time to gain the extra point for a tech fall. Ryan is now 9-0 on the season, with four of those wins coming via bonus points.

The match started at 165 pounds with Solon native Justin Kresevic picking up 10-3 decision over Nathan Wynkoop, thanks in large part to a four-point third period near fall. The win was Kresevic’s fifth of the year. After a scoreless first period, Kresevic got a quick escape in the second and a takedown for a 3-0 lead before taking full control in the final two minutes.

Bo Jordan, ranked No. 1 at 174 pounds, showed why in the next match, as he needed just 28 seconds to pin Gabe Stark. It was Jordan’s second pin in just five matches this year.

Jack Rozema continued the early-dual momentum with a 12-4 major decision over Jacob Worthington at 184 pounds. It was Rozema’s first dual match win of the season and he gained it by breaking open the match in the second period thanks to a scape and two takedowns. He also racked up well over a minute of riding time to get Ohio State a bonus point for the major decision.

After Ohio State forfeited at 197 lbs., the only match of the night that featured two ranked wrestlers went to Cleveland State, as 285-pounder Riley Shaw, ranked No. 8, edged No. 18 Nick Tavanello, 6-4, on the strength of two late escapes. Tavanello had tied the match at 4-4 with a takedown towards the end of the second period, but Shaw escaped twice before the final buzzer sounded in his decision. It was Tavanello’s first loss of the season (7-1).

Nathan Tomasello, wrestling near his hometown of Parma, Ohio, showed by he continues to maintain a stranglehold on the top spot at 125 pounds with a 23-7 tech fall over Evan Cheek. Cheek came strong out of the gates, getting the matches initial takedown, but from there Tomasello wore down Creek with an onslaught of offense that included 22 of the 27 points, including a four-point near-fall.

Johnni DiJulius, also from the Cleveland area (Aurora, Ohio), was tied with CSU’s Alfredo Gray at 3-3 before he scored a one-point escape with 25 seconds left that proved to be the difference. DiJulius led 3-1 into the third period on a first-period takedown and second-period escape.

Cleveland State won the next two matches, at 141 and 149 pounds, respectively. Mike Carlone’s reversal at the end of the third period gave him a 4-3 win over Mike Hozan while Cody Burcher was pinned by Nick Montgomery 5:34 into the match.

The Buckeyes, which rose two spots in this week’s USA Today/NWCA Coaches Poll from No. 5 to No. 3 and also picked up a first place vote, are off until Dec. 4-5 when they travel to Las Vegas, Nev. for the CKLV Invitational.

UVU wrestling receiving votes for USA Today/NWCA Top 25 Poll
Nov. 24, 2015
MANHEIM, Pa. – Fresh off of an upset win over No. 18 Oregon State in Corvallis, Oregon this past weekend, the Utah Valley University wrestling team is currently receiving votes for the USA Today/NWCA Division I Coaches Poll for the first team in program history.

The poll, which comes out every Tuesday, has Utah Valley (2-3, 0-0 Big 12) just outside of the top-25 with two votes. The Wolverines are one of six teams that are currently receiving votes for the top-25 after dropping the Beavers from 18th to 23rd in the poll with a 20-19 victory over Oregon State last Saturday.

Senior 125-pounder Chasen Tolbert (5-0) moved into the top-10 in the national rankings for the first time in his career on Tuesday as well as he currently finds himself ranked eighth in his weight class by InterMat after knocking off No. 10 Ronnie Bresser of Oregon State by a score of 4-3 to help the Wolverines defeat the Beavers. The eighth-place ranking is one of the highest individual rankings in school history for Utah Valley, as former Wolverine greats Benjamin Kjar (125) and Flint Ray (133) are the only other wrestlers in program history to have cracked the top 10.

Fellow senior Derek Thomas (5-0 at 197 pounds) too finds himself ranked for the first time in his career this week after picking up an upset win of his own over No. 15 Cody Crawford of Oregon State by major decision (10-1) in the win over OSU last Saturday. Thomas debuts at 19th on this week’s InterMat poll.

The Wolverines, who also hold a win over Michigan State of the Big Ten Conference on the season, will look to continue their winning ways when Boise State comes to town for UVU’s home opener on Saturday, Nov. 28. The Big 12 vs. Pac-12 matchup will begin at 4 p.m. and will be contested in Utah Valley’s PE Building.

Nifty Fifty: Martinez & Koepke Notch 50th Wins

Isaiah Martinez and Jeff Koepke both won for the fifth time in an Illini singlet. Martinez earned his against Utah Valley’s Morgan Way (TF 22-7), his 44th straight win. Koepke finished off his 50th career win against Clarion’s Dominic Rigous (D 7-4).

New Stalling & Near Fall Rules for 15-16 Season

In July, the NCAA approved drop-down, neutral position stalling rules after they were experimented with last season.  The rule states that:

“The referee will immediately begin a five-second count for stalling once the offensive wrestler positions himself with one or both hands below the buttocks of the defensive wrestler. The referee will stop the count when the offensive wrestler improves his position, moves his hold above the buttocks of the defensive wrestler or releases the hold. If the refere reaches a five-count, the offensive wrestler will be called for stalling. Additionally, if the offensive wrestler lifts the defensive wrestler’s leg off the mat and both wrestlers reach the standing position, the referee will stop the five-second count. But if the offensive wrestler does not continue to attempt to return the defensive wrestler to the mat, the referee can call stalling, as in the past, without the five-second count.”

For near falls, the offensive wrestler will be awarded two points if the referee gets to a two-count and four points if the referee reaches a four-count.

B1G Reign in Early Rankings

The Big Ten Conference enters the 15-16 campaign with ten teams inside the top-25 across multiple polls. The conference is coming off a year where Ohio State and Iowa tied for the Big Ten title, and then Buckeyes brought home the national title as well. The defending champs enter the season ranked as high as fifth (USA Today) with Iowa as high as second (W.I.N.) Joining the reigning champs will be Penn State and Michigan, both ranked among  the top-five in Intermat and USA Today to begin the season, after they posted top-five team finishes at Big Ten Championships last March. Wisconsin and Nebraska also don a top-10 ranking to begin play this year, with Illinois just behind them. The Orange and Blue will face off against eight of the nine other ranked Big Ten foes this season, five of which will come at Huff Hall.

Illinois Quick Hits:

  •         Isaiah Martinez won a hard fought contest against Oliver Pierce of Arizona State before grabbing his first pin of the season against Nate Higgins of SIU Edwardsville (2:52). Martinez has now won 47 straight duals. Martinez won the 2015 Big Ten Championship as well as recording 24 of his 35 victories by a major decision on his way to defeating Brian Realbuto of Cornell in the NCAA Final. Martinez was honored with Big Ten, InterMat, and Amateur Wrestling News Freshman of the Year, and 2015 Fighting Illini Freshman of the Year.
  •         Junior Zac Brunson (174) doubled his total pins on the season at the Illini Duals, nabbing one in both matches against No. 25 Arizona State and SIU Edwardsville. His total of four pins surpasses his season-high of 3 back in 2012-13.
  • Since switching to 165 pounds, Steven Rodrigues has started the season 5-0, his best start since his freshman year at Rutgers. The senior has won four of his five bouts by major decision or more, two of which were technical falls.
  • The Fighting Illini enter the final weekend of November with seven wrestlers ranked in the top-20 in their respective classes, three of whom are ranked inside the top-six. The seven wrestlers have combined to go 37-3 to start the season. The Grapple at the Garden will serve as a preview of NCAA Championships also held at Madison Square Garden in New York.
