Pair Named to Nagurski Trophy Watch List

Marcus Allen and Jason Cabinda each land on their third watch list of the season

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; July 10, 2017 – Senior safety Marcus Allen (Upper Marlboro, Md.) and senior linebacker Jason Cabinda (Flemington, N.J.) added their names to a third watch list this season with a berth on the Bronko Nagurski Trophy Watch List for the Football Writers Association of America’s National Defensive Player of the Year.

The Bronko Nagurski Trophy is given yearly to the National Defensive Player of the Year. The award is named for legendary two-way player from the University of Minnesota, Bronko Nagurski, who dominated college football then became a star for the Chicago Bears in the 1930s. Penn State has never won a Nagurski Trophy, but has had five finalists, most recently Carl Nassib in 2015.

Allen, who is also on the 2017 Lott IMPACT Trophy and Bednarik Award watch lists, was selected third-team All-Big Ten by the conference’s coaches and honorable mention by the media panel last season. He made a team- and career-high 110 tackles on the season to become the first Penn State safety to lead the team in tackles since Shawn Mayer (144) in 2002. He was honored as the Big Ten Co-Defensive Player of the Week and Rose Bowl Player of the Week for his 22-tackle effort versus Minnesota Oct. 1. He also claimed Oct. 24 Co-Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week accolades after blocking a field goal attempt versus No. 2 Ohio State, which led to the game-winning touchdown by teammate Grant Haley. Allen finished the season ranked 16th in the Big Ten with 7.9 tackles per game and was third in the conference with two fumble recoveries. For his career, Allen has 249 tackles, 13.0 tackles for loss, three forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and eight pass breakups.

Cabinda also earned on the 2017 Lott IMPACT Trophy and Bednarik Award watch lists. A 2017 team captain, Cabinda garnered third-team All-Big Ten accolades from the conference coaches, despite missing five games due to injury. He posted eight tackles or more in all nine games he played in last season and has logged eight or more tackles in 11 of his last 13 games, dating back to 2015. Cabinda finished third on the squad with 81 tackles in 2016, after posting 100 stops in his sophomore season. He had 13 tackles in the upset win over No. 2 Ohio State, including the game-clinching takedown of Buckeye quarterback J.T. Barrett on 4th-and-23 on OSU’s final drive. For his career, Cabinda has 198 tackles, eight pass breakups, 3.5 sacks and 10.0 tackles for loss.

Eight different Nittany Lions have been named to preseason watch lists. Those Lions include: junior running back Saquon Barkley – Maxwell Award (National Player of the Year); junior quarterback Trace McSorley – Maxwell Award (National Player of the Year); senior safety Marcus Allen – Lott IMPACT Trophy (National Defensive of the Year on and off the field), Bednarik Award (National Defensive of the Year), Nagurski Trophy (National Defensive of the Year); senior linebacker Jason Cabinda – Lott IMPACT Trophy (National Defensive of the Year on and off the field), Bednarik Award (National Defensive of the Year), Nagurski Trophy (National Defensive of the Year); senior tight end Mike Gesicki –Mackey Award (top tight end); senior linebacker Brandon Smith – Allstate AFCA Good Works; senior kicker Tyler Davis – Lou Groza Award (top kicker); sophomore punter Blake Gillikin – Ray Guy Award (top punter).

IRVING, Texas (July 13, 2017) The National Football Foundation (NFF) & College Hall of Fame announced today that the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl will host the 13th Annual National Hall of Fame Salute on Monday, Jan. 1, 2018. The event, which will take place at the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium and just steps from the College Football Hall of Fame in the heart of Atlanta, will utilize the Bowl to showcase the 2017 College Football Hall of Fame Class. The game will be nationally telecast on ESPN beginning at 12:30 p.m. ET.

Prior to the game, a multi-day celebration for the inductees will take place in Atlanta, including several unique events and a special public ceremony at the College Football Hall of Fame where the inductees will see their legendary accomplishments permanently immortalized for the first time.
“The Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl has established itself as one of the premier events in all of college football, and we are proud to partner with them in shining a light on the 2017 Hall of Fame Class,” said NFF President & CEO Steve Hatchell. “Taking place just steps from the Hall, the game provides a powerful venue for showcasing what it means to be a Hall of Famer. It will allow the inductees to visit the Hall while creating a momentous conclusion for each inductee before we announce the next class before the College Football Playoff National Championship.”
The event will mark the third time the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl has hosted the event, and this season’s game will feature two of the top-ranked teams in the country as selected by the College Football Playoff Selection Committee.
“Atlanta is the epicenter of college football,” Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl Chairman Percy Vaughn said. “There is no better place to formally welcome these 13 legends of the game to their new permanent home in the College Football Hall of Fame.”
“As one of the founding partners of the Hall, we are honored to recognize these inductees at our game. This year’s Salute will be especially powerful with the backdrop of our Bowl’s 50th Anniversary and our move into the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium,” said Gary Stokan, Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl president and CEO.
The 13th Annual National Hall of Fame Salute at the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl will highlight the outstanding careers of 10 All-America players and three legendary coaches who established themselves among the greatest to ever set foot on the college gridiron. The group (listed below) was announced on Jan. 9, and they will formally be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame during the 60th NFF Annual Awards Dinner on Dec. 5 at the New York Hilton Midtown. They will also be honored on the field at their respective schools throughout the season on various dates during the NFF Hall of Fame On-Campus Salutes, presented by Fidelity Investments.
“Our Hall of Fame experience is like no other as the members of each class are honored multiple times throughout the year,” said NFF Chairman Archie Manning. “And we are very excited to be able to bring the class together one last time at the National Hall of Fame Salute in such close proximity to the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta. We want to extend a big thanks to Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl Chairman Percy Vaughn and Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl President & CEO Gary Stokanfor making this happen. They have been passionate supporters of the Hall for many years, and celebrating the newest Hall of Fame class on the field at the game will be a thrill for both the fans and the inductees.”
Two of the three coaches in the 2017 College Football Hall of Fame Class led their teams to appearances in the Peach Bowl. Danny Ford led the Clemson Tigers to the 1979 Peach Bowl, and Steve Spurrier guided the South Carolina Gamecocks to the 2010 Chick-fil-A Bowl. Both coaches are members of the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl of Fame, and they were inducted together in 2016.

Buckeyes Assist “Goodwill Gladiators” at Special Skills Invite

Ohio State players tutor about 400 individuals with special needs at annual event

COLUMBUS, Ohio – It all started with a simple question posed by Special Olympics coach Steve Weaver to Buckeye head coach Urban Meyer five years go: Would Ohio State be willing to participate in a football training camp for his athletes and bring Buckeye players as guest coaches. The answer was a resounding yes.

Now, in 2017, the event – called The Special Skills Invitational – has grown to include approximately 400 athletes from 14 counties all over Ohio. Although weather forced it inside to the Woody Hayes Athletic Facility on Thursday, the campers’ spirits were brightened as approximately 30 players put them through a variety of station drills. Meyer also made an appearance, taking his time to walk around to each station while interacting and taking pictures with the campers.

“The whole goal of this event is to show the community that these kids can do more than anyone thinks they can,” said Weaver. “They come here with such great energy. They’re engaged, they’re excited and the Buckeye players and staff bring that as well.”

Weaver said that Meyer agreed to speak to his athletes – the Goodwill Gladiators – at its end end-of-the-year banquet in January of 2015, shortly after the Buckeyes’ College Football Playoff national championship run. At that time, Weaver broached the subject of bringing the camp to Ohio State (it had been held at Hilliard Bradley High School in 2013 and 2014).

“He didn’t hesitate for a second – the answer was yes,” said Weaver. “His players are tremendous. They get it. Every year, more and more of them have come out. I think they get as much out of it as our athletes do.”

Sponsored by Kroger and Goodwill Columbus, The Special Skills Invitational featured over 100 volunteers. Included in the group of players who served as coaches for the day were safeties Damon Webb, Jordan Fuller and Brendon White, linebackers Chris Worley, Jerome Baker, Justin Hilliard, Tuff Borland, Barron Browning and Pete Werner, long snapper Liam McCullough and punter Drue Chrisman. The athletes were put through some of the same drills that the Buckeyes will be perfecting when training camp opens – slamming tackling dummies to the ground, dragging weights and sprinting while strapped to parachutes.

“This is something that these kids will remember forever,” said Weaver. “I can’t thank Ohio State and the football program enough. Everything they do is first class the entire way.”

Birsner Announces Changes to Coaching Staff

LEXINGTON, Va. – VMI lacrosse head coach Jon Birsner announced Wednesday that current assistant coach and offensive coordinator James Purpura has been promoted to recruiting coordinator and that Dave Scarcello has been added as an assistant coach to his staff.

Purpura’s promotion comes after completing his first year on staff, where under his tutelage the Keydet offense improved in nearly every statistical category, including scoring the most goals per game in half a decade. Under Purpura’s leadership, junior attackman Wesley Sanders was named first team All-Southern Conference and freshmen attackman John Daniel was named to the Southern Conference All-Freshman team.

He will maintain his responsibilities as the program’s offensive coordinator on top of his new recruiting duties while Scarcello will serve as the defensive coordinator and goalies coach.

Scarcello comes to VMI after spending the last two seasons serving as the graduate assistant at Concordia University Wisconsin, where he took on the roles of defensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator. Under his leadership, the Falcon scoring defense finished the 2017 season ranked fourth nationally in the NCAA Division III ranks.

“I would like to thank Coach Birsner and Dr. Diles for this exciting opportunity,” Scarcello said. “I am honored to work alongside a great staff that is committed to the continued growth of the program at such a distinct institution as VMI.”

In 2017, the Falcons won a share of the Midwest Lacrosse Conference regular season title for the first time in program history. In two seasons, Scarcello helped coach six first team All-Conference defenders, as well as the MLC Defensive Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year in consecutive seasons. He also helped coach the IMLCA All-West Region second team goaltender who was ranked sixth nationally in save percentage in both 2016 and 2017.

In two seasons with the Falcons, the team amassed 25 wins for a 69.4 percent winning percentage. They made back-to-back appearances in the MLC Finals. Their scoring defense also ranked first in conference in both the 2016 and 2017 seasons.

Scarcello played his collegiate lacrosse at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, New York. In 2015, he helped the Foxes to their first MAAC Championship win since 2005 while being named the MAAC Tournament Most Outstanding Player. During that run, the Foxes beat Bryant University in the NCAA play-in game, capturing their first NCAA tournament win in program history. The Foxes also finished the season ranked 19th nationally, a first in program history. In addition to the team’s successful season, Scarcello received personal accolades by being named a USILA Scholar All-American goalie.

He is a 2015 graduate of Marist, where he earned a bachelor of science degree in business administration. Scarcello is completing his master of business administration degree from Concordia University Wisconsin with an expected graduation of August 2017.

The Lou Groza Award is awarded to the nation’s top kicker, while the Ray Guy Award is given annually to the nation’s top punter.

The Augusta Sports Council created the Ray Guy Award in 2000 to honor Thomson, Georgia native and College and Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee, Ray Guy. Among the statistics used to identify the winner is net punting average, number of times punt is downed or kicked out of bounds inside the opponents 20-yard line, total yardage punted, average returned yardage and percentage of punts not returned with particular emphasis placed on net punting average. The winner must display team leadership, self-discipline and have a positive impact on the team’s success.

Davis and Gillikin are the seventh and eighth different Nittany Lion on a preseason watch list. Junior running back Saquon Barkley (Coplay, Pa.) and junior quarterback Trace McSorley (Ashburn, Va.) were named to the Maxwell Award watch list for the National Player of the Year, senior safety Marcus Allen (Upper Marlboro, Md.) and senior linebacker Jason Cabinda (Flemington, N.J.) are nominees for the Bednarik Award for the National Defensive Player of the Year, senior tight end Mike Gesicki (Manahawkin, N.J.), who is on the John Mackey Award list for nation’s top tight end and senior linebacker Brandon Smith (Winfield, Pa.) is among the nominees for the Allstate AFCA Good Works team.

Davis earned the 2016 Vlade Award for the nation’s most accurate kicker from the Touchdown Club of Columbus to go along with first-team All-Big Ten accolades from the conference coaches and second team accolades from the media. He was a semifinalist for the Groza award last season. Davis tied the Penn State single-season record with 62 converted extra points attempts, equaling Brett Conway’s mark from 1994 and tied for No. 2 on Penn State’s single-season field goals made charts (22), trailing only Sam Ficken’s 24 makes from 2014. Davis finished No. 5 on the PSU single-season scoring charts (128 points) and also tied the Big Ten single-season kick scoring record with 128 points, equaling the mark set by Ohio State’s Sean Nuernberger in 2014. For his career, Davis ranks No. 12 on Penn State’s career field goals made charts with 30. He also broke the school record for consecutive field goals made with 18, topping Sam Ficken’s mark of 15 straight makes between the 2012 and 2013 seasons. The 18-straight made field goals were tied for the longest streak in the Big Ten since Brad Craddock (UMD) converted 24-straight in from 2013-14 and are tied for fourth in Big Ten history. Davis led the Big Ten and was eighth nationally with a .917 field goal percentage and ws second in the conference and 11th nationally in total points (128). Davis had the third-most extra point makes among kickers with a perfect percentage in FBS in 2016.

Gillikin was selected to ESPN.com’s True Freshman All-America team and was an All-Big Ten honorable mention selection by the conference’s coaches and media after a stellar rookie campaign. He broke the Penn State freshman season punting average record with 42.8 yards per punt, surpassing the record set by Jeremy Kapinos in 2003 (41.9). His effort also ranks No. 7 on Penn State’s single-season chart. Gillkin finished the season 30th in FBS and third in the Big Ten in punting average. In addition, Gillikin set the Penn State freshman record for punting average in a game with five kicks for an average of 50.8 yards in the Rose Bowl against USC. He was also stellar in the classroom, posting perfect 4.0 grade point averages in both semesters and claimed the President’s Freshman Award, which recognizes Penn State students for academic excellence.

The Nittany Lions’ home schedule features a trio of non-conference games, including Pitt’s first visit to Beaver Stadium since 1999. The Nittany Lions open the season against Akron (Sept. 2; noon) and face Pitt (Sept. 9; 3:30 p.m.) and Georgia State (Sept. 16) to close out a three-game homestand to start the year. In Big Ten play, Penn State welcomes Indiana (Sept. 30), Michigan (Oct. 21), Rutgers (Nov. 11; noon – Homecoming) and Nebraska (Nov. 18) to Happy Valley.
