LSU DEFEATS UTAH VALLEY, 7-1, IN GAME 1 OF NCAA BATON ROUGE REGIONAL

BATON ROUGE, La. — Following more than six hours of delays for heavy rain and lightning at Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field, the fifth-ranked LSU baseball team built an early lead and advanced in the NCAA Regional with a 7-1 win over Utah Valley late Friday.

LSU (43-18), which won its 27th-consecutive regional opening game, capitalized on six solid innings of work by starter Jared Poche’ (8-4) and will face the

winner of second-seeded Rice and third-seeded Southeastern Louisiana at 7 p.m. CT on Saturday.

Friday’s Game 2 between the Owls and Lions was postponed until 9 a.m. CT Saturday due to the late start (8:34 p.m.) of Game 1 on Friday. Utah Valley (37-22), making its NCAA Tournament debut, will face the loser of the SLU-Rice game at 2 p.m. Saturday.

LIve video of all games in the Baton Rouge Regional are available via www.ESPN3.com.

LSU, the NCAA Tournament No. 8 National Seed, had a 28-16 record on April 30 and has now won 15 of its last 17 games.

“I just thought it was a really solid performance again by our team in every way, very reminiscent of our game against Mississippi State at the SEC Tournament,” said LSU coach Paul Mainieri. “I thought Jared (Poche’) set the tone. He pitched great all night in typical fashion, wiggled out of a couple of jams with some clutch pitches. We had a lot of great at-bats. We knocked out their starting pitcher, who we knew he had a good arm, a big strong guy. We had some really good at-bats, clutch hitting. We just kind of strung a lot of singles together to get some runs.”

Poche’ (9-4) allowed only one run on five hits with a career-best eight strikeouts and no walks. Three Tigers –Jake Latz, Russell Reynolds and John Valek III – were nearly perfect in relief, allowing only one hit with four strikeouts in the final three innings.

Poche’, who has won  at least eight games in each of this three seasons, improved his career mark at LSU to 26-9.

“Our bullpen did a terrific job,” Mainieri said. “It was really a good workmanlike performance in our first game. I didn’t think our young players who have not played in the postseason showed any nerves at all. I thought they played just like they have been playing all year, especially at the tail end of the year. It was a good start for us. We have a lot of work to do, but it was a good way to start the tournament.”

Ten Tigers — including all nine starters — had hits, as LSU scored in the first three frames to open a 4-1 lead. Home runs by Jake Fraley – a 428-foot blast to right field in the first inning – and Greg Deichmann in the seventh were too much for the Wolverines to overcome.

Deichmann was 2-for-4 with three RBI, while shortstopKramer Robertson was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles.

Utah Valley starter Danny Beddes (9-4) took the loss after giving up four runs on four hits in three innings with three walks and four strikeouts.

Beede Befuddles Baysox

Richmond starting pitcher Tyler Beede threw eight one-hit innings as the Flying Squirrels shut down the Baysox for a 3-0 win Thursday night to split the series. Henry Urrutia managed the only hit of the game for Bowie in the sixth inning.

Beede was perfect the first time through the order until Urrutia reached on a fielding error to lead off the fourth inning. Just three Baysox reached base through the entire game.

The Flying Squirrels led throughout the game after scoring a pair of runs against Baysox starter John Means in the bottom of the first inning. Myles Schroder hit a lead-off single to center field and Christian Arroyo followed with double to left field. Ryder Jones brought one run home with a groundout and Ricky Oropesa plated a second run with a single to center field to make the score 2-0.

Richmond added one more run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Ali Castillo hit a lead-off double to left field, moved to third base on a wild pitch and scored on a two-out Jones double to right field to make the score 3-0.

Means threw six innings and allowed three runs on 10 hits while striking out two and walking one in the loss. Reliever Bobby Bundy threw three scoreless innings to finish the game, allowing one hit and striking out two.

The Baysox return home Friday to begin a three-day, four-game home series against the Akron RubberDucks. Friday, the Baysox will celebrate local Community Heroes during the 7:05 p.m. game. RHP Brandon Barker (1-0, 5.40) will pitch for the Baysox and he will be opposed by RHP Adam Plutko (3-2, 2.66)

Subject: Pawtucket 3, Norfolk 1 (14 innings)
To:

Dariel Alvarez had five hits and Odrisamer Despaigne turned in a strong start, but the Pawtucket Red Sox outlasted the Tides 3-1 in 14 innings Thursday night at Harbor Park.

Alvarez matched his career high as he registered three singles and two doubles in the contest to raise his average to .291. The five hits were the most in a game for a Tides player since Henry Urrutia accomplished the feat on 7/10/13 at Gwinnett, and it was the second five-hit game in Alvarez’ career, matching a five-hit night he had with Double-A Bowie during the 2014 campaign.

Alvarez’ big night went for naught, however, as Pawtucket escaped several Norfolk threats late in the game en route to pulling out the victory in the opener of the four-game set. The Pawsox finally pulled ahead in the 14th inning on a two-out RBI double by Mike Miller and an RBI single by Ryan LaMarre off of Zach Phillips (3-2).

The Tides repeatedly had opportunities to win the contest, as Norfolk put the leadoff runner on base in seven consecutive innings from the sixth through 12th frame, but could not push across the winning run. Norfolk eventually finished the contest 1-for-24 with runners in scoring position and left a franchise record 19 men on base, surpassing the previous record of 18 set on 4/21/78 at Syracuse.

Despaigne did not allow a run over his first six innings of work before he was removed from the contest after yielding a leadoff double to Sandy Leon in the seventh frame. Leon came around to score on a one-out single by Jose Vinicio off of Pedro Beato, Vinicio’s first career Triple-A run batted in.

Despaigne yielded five hits and walked one while striking out three, lowering his ERA to 3.97 through 11 starts this season. Norfolk has plated 19 total runs in Despaigne’s starts this year (1.7 per game), including just 10 with him in the game.

Trey Mancini had two hits and an RBI in the contest, while Mike Yastrzemski and Ozzie Martinez both added multiple hits in the game. Mancini has now reached base safely in 10 consecutive contests, over which he has hit .351 (13-37) with two home runs and six RBI.

The two clubs continue their four-game series Friday night at Harbor Park, with first pitch slated for 7:05. Joe Gunkel (1-3, 4.36) gets the start for Norfolk against right-hander Aaron Wilkerson (1-0, 3.18). On Friday, the first 2,000 fans 17 & under will receive a youth replica Tides jersey, courtesy of Pepsi.

Notes: Prior to Thursday’s game, the Orioles selected the contract of Tides LHP Brian Duensing and optioned RHP Mike Wright to Norfolk…Pawtucket outfielder Ryan LaMarre made a leaping catch at the center field wall to deny Chris O’Brien of an extra-base hit leading off the second inning…Norfolk’s bullpen allowed two runs over eight innings of work, including four shutout innings of relief from Scott McGough…Pedro Beato worked two shutout innings of relief, as he’s not allowed an earned run in 11 consecutive appearances.

Rowdy Rides Again in 2-1 Win
Fisher Cats Earn Series Victory Over Senators

HARRISBURG – The New Hampshire Fisher Cats held on for a nail-biter of a victory Thursday night, topping the Harrisburg Senators 2-1 at FNB Field in Harrisburg to secure a series win.

The Fisher Cats (25-27) polished off the first series of their road trip with a win, leaving the bases loaded in the ninth inning to hold off their opponents. Harrisburg (27-25) couldn’t score on New Hampshire’s bullpen, which allowed only a single run (unearned) in the series. It was the first series against Western Division competition for New Hampshire.

Harrisburg struck first against Fisher Cats starter Shane Dawson (W, 3-2) in the bottom of the second inning. Neftali Soto led off the frame with a single, and Spencer Kieboom sliced a one-out double into the right field corner to plate Kieboom. Harrisburg assumed a 1-0 lead.

New Hampshire evened the score in the top of the fourth against Harrisburg starting pitcher Tyler Mapes (L, 5-3). With one out, Rowdy Tellez ripped a fastball into the right-center field gap, sending it all the way to the wall. Tellez legged out a triple, his first three bagger since August 13, 2014. With two outs, Wilkin Castillo hit a bouncer to the left side of the infield that forced third baseman Adrian Sanchez and shortstop Wilmer Difo to converge. The two collided, allowing Castillo to reach with an RBI single and Tellez to score, tying the game at 1-1.

The Fisher Cats moved into the lead in the top of the sixth inning. Jon Berti led off with a single, and moved to second when Dwight Smith, Jr. drew a walk. Melky Mesa fanned, but Tellez knocked an RBI double into the left-center field gap, plating Berti for the go-ahead run and giving New Hampshire a 2-1 lead. The Fisher Cats didn’t relinquish the edge, with Jason Berken (H, 2) and Wil Browning (S, 8) combining to polish off the victory.

Dawson twirled six strong innings, allowing just one run on four hits and two walks while fanning four to earn the win. Bergen struck out two against three hits over two innings for a hold, and Browning worked around two hits in a scoreless inning for the save.

The Fisher Cats open up a four-game series at the Reading Fightin Phils Friday night, with lefty John Anderson starting for New Hampshire against reading righty Ricardo Pinto. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m., and Ben Gellman has the call starting at 6:45 p.m. on the Fisher Cats Radio Network.

Roscetti a Brooks Wallace Award Semifinalist

UI senior is 1 of 11 remaining for an award presented to nation’s top shortstop

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa senior Nick Roscetti is a semifinalist for the Brooks Wallace Shortstop of the Year Award, it was announced Thursday by the College Baseball Hall of Fame.

Roscetti is one of 11 players named to the semifinal list, joining four players from the Atlantic Coast Conference, two from the Big 12 Conference, Conference USA, and Southeastern Conference. Roscetti is the lone Big Ten Conference player remaining.

The Sherman, Illinois, native closed out his Hawkeye career by earning first-team All-Big Ten honors in 2016.  Roscetti started all 56 games, where he hit .305 with 72 hits, 43 runs, and 39 RBIs.  He finished the year with 25 multi-hit games and a team-leading 13 multi-RBI contests.

Defensively, Roscetti was one of the nation’s top shortstops, committing just five errors in 249 chances for a .980 fielding percentage and he has been a part of 33 double plays. Roscetti was a key cog in the middle of an Iowa defense that ranked 14th nationally in team fielding percentage.

The award, sponsored by Mizuno, will be presented as part of the annual Night of Champions celebration July 2 in Lubbock, Texas. For more information, visit www.collegebaseballhall.org.

The Hawkeyes finished the 2016 season by reaching the Big Ten Tournament title game as the No. 8 seed. Iowa finished 30-26 overall to post its third straight 30-win campaign, a first for the program since 1983-85.

AKRON, Ohio – The Altoona Curve scored early and held on for a 5-4 win against the Akron RubberDucks on Thursday night, taking the rubber game of the three-game set at Canal Park.

The second-place Curve (30-22) closed within 5.5 games of the division-leading RubberDucks (36-17).

The Curve scored a pair of runs in the first, thanks to two Akron errors. On a ball batted by Jose Osuna, third baseman Eric Stamets was charged with a throwing error that allowed Erich Weiss to score. Jin-De Jhang followed with a fly ball to center that was dropped by center fielder Bradley Zimmer, allowing Austin Meadows to cross the plate.

Meadows reached on a triple and Osuna brought him in to score with a double. Edwin Espinal added an RBI double later in the inning to extend the lead to 4-0 against Akron starter Anderson Polanco (Loss, 1-4).

After back-to-back singles to open the fifth and a fielding error in right field by Mike Papi, Osuna hit a sacrifice fly to plate Weiss and push to Curve lead to 5-0.

Akron broke the shutout with a run in the bottom of the fifth and added a two-run homer by Taylor Murphy in the sixth to close within two runs against starter Clay Holmes (Win, 5-4).

Holmes went six innings and allowed three earned runs on six hits with five strikeouts.

The RubberDucks closed within a run in the seventh after a wild pitch brought Todd Hankins across the plate, ending a streak of 18.1 scoreless innings and 12 outings without allowing a run by Curve reliever Dovydas Neverauskas, the longest span for any Curve pitcher this season.

Lefty Jared Lakind (Save, 3) pitched the final 1.2 innings and stranded the tying run on base in the ninth. He extended his current scoreless streak to 17.1 innings and has not allowed a run in 12 appearances.

Meadows went 2-for-4 with a walk and scored two runs to stretch his hitting streak to 11 games. During the streak, the Pirates’ second-ranked prospect is  .464 (19-for-41) with seven multi-hit games, four doubles, three triples, a home run, five steals, five walks, 11 runs scored and just four strikeouts.

The Curve open a three-game series against the Binghamton Mets on Friday night at PNG Field. Lefty Brandon Waddell (3-1, 4.91) will be on the mound for Altoona, countered by Binghamton right-hander Tyler Pill (3-5, 4.13).

The Curve begin a new homestand on Friday with Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood Night, featuring the Daniel Tiger Plays Ball Figurine Giveaway to the first 1,000 fans ages 10 & under, presented by the Altoona Grand Hotel. Delgado & Gibson Tame SeaWolves, 6-1

ERIE, PA – Casey Delgado fired eight innings of one-run ball and the Binghamton Mets backed him with 13 hits in a 6-1 win over the Erie SeaWolves on Wednesday night at Jerry Uht Park. Derrik Gibson compiled his second straight four-hit game, finished a homer shy of the cycle and drove in three runs to guide the B-Mets to consecutive victories for the first time in two weeks.

Delgado opened his fifth career Double-A starter by sailing through a perfect first inning. The righty used a pair of double plays to erase leadoff walks in the second and third.

The twin-killing in the third started an extended cruise for Delgado. The righty put down 13 of the next 14 batters he faced, carrying the game into the seventh inning. Corey Jones snapped the stretch with a solo homer, but Delgado bounced back with two strikeouts in the eighth to cap his night.

For the second straight night, Gibson led the offensive charge from the leadoff spot. The third baseman started the game with a double and came home when Phillip Evans pelted the left-field wall with a double. Gibson struck again in Binghamton’s three-run fourth inning by slicing a two-run triple into the right-field corner.

Dominic Smith provided the only hit from the heart of the B-Mets batting order by doubling in the seventh. The B-Met first baseman collected his team-leading 34th RBI on a run-producing fielder’s choice in the ninth.

Delgado (3-2) struck out seven and allowed one run on three hits in his second win in as many starts. He never faced more than four batters in any inning and only let two SeaWolves get past first base. Tim Peterson closed Binghamton’s pitching tab with a perfect ninth.

SeaWolves starter Cory Riordan (3-4) was touched for five runs on ten hits over 5-1/3 innings.

The B-Mets (21-30) conclude their final series in Erie in 2016 on Thursday at 11:05 AM. RHP Mickey Jannis gets the nod against RHP Myles Jaye. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame Show can be heard starting at 10:50 AM on ESPN 1360 WYOS and the Binghamton Mets channel on TuneIn.

Nathans Spurs Baysox Doubleheader Split

Bowie, Md. – The Baysox broke a scoreless tie in the sixth inning of Game 2 Wednesday to secure a 3-0 win and a doubleheader split against the Richmond Flying Squirrels. The Flying Squirrels homered twice in the first inning of Game 1 on the way to a 4-2 victory.

Bowie’s pitching staff got off to a rough start, but after the four first inning runs allowed by Game 1 starter David Hess, the Baysox shut-out the Flying Squirrels over 13 innings and allowed just eight hits. In the first three games of this week’s series, the Baysox have allowed just those four runs.

The Flying Squirrels jumped on the Baysox and starter David Hess in the bottom of the first inning when Myles Schroder hit a lead-off home run to right field. With two outs, Ricky Oropesa and Hunter Cole hit back-to-back singles before Ryder Jones hit the second home run of the inning to give Richmond a 4-0 lead.

Bowie got on the board in the top of the fourth inning against Richmond starter Dan Slania. Tucker Nathans hit a lead-off single to center field and Chance Sisco followed with a walk. Garabez Rosa singled to load the bases, but Henry Urrutia then grounded into a double play that brought one run home. Joey Terdoslavich then singled to right field to bring Sisco home and made the score 4-2.

Hess threw five innings and allowed four runs on seven hits while striking out four and walking one in the loss. Reliever Jon Keller threw a scoreless sixth inning to finish the game, allowing one hit and striking out one.

Richmond reliever Christian Jones earned the win, throwing two scoreless innings behind Slania and striking out two batters.

Runs proved hard to come by in Game two, but it was the Baysox who finally struck in the top of the sixth inning against Richmond starter Matt Gage. Urrutia hit a one-out single to left field and Rosa followed with a single to right field. Quincy Latimore was hit-by-a-pitch to load the bases and Nathans then cleared the bases with a double to left field to give the Baysox a 3-0 lead.

Stefan Crichton made the spot start out of the bullpen for the Baysox and threw three scoreless innings, allowing one hit, walking one and striking out three batters. The Baysox have won each of Crichton’s three doubleheader spot starts. Reliever Jimmy Yacabonis threw two scoreless innings and allowed two hits with two strikeouts in the win. Genison Reyes and Jason Stoffel combined to throw two scoreless innings to close out the game as Stoffel earned his ninth save of the season.

The Baysox complete a three-day, four-game series in Richmond Thursday. LHP John Means (0-1, 6.75) will pitch for the Baysox and he will be opposed by RHP Tyler Beede (2-3, 3.53). The team returns home Friday for a three-game home series against the Akron RubberDucks.
