Furman’s Matt Rafferty named player of the week
Senior averaged a double-double in pair of wins

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman forward Matt Rafferty has been named the Southern Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for all contests Dec. 11-17. The award is selected by the league office.

Rafferty turned in well-rounded stat lines in both of the Paladins’ contests last week, averaging 13.5 points, 12.5 rebounds, 6.5 assists, 4.0 steals and 2.5 blocked shots per game.

In Furman’s 77-69 win over Charleston Southern on Dec. 11, the Hinsdale, Illinois, native scored 14 points and pulled down 14 rebounds, adding six assists, three blocks and four steals. In the Paladins’ 93-50 win over UNCW on Saturday, Rafferty had 13 points, 11 boards, seven assists with no turnovers, four steals and two blocked shots.

For the week, Rafferty shot 73.3 percent from the floor, making 11 of his 15 attempts, including his only 3-point try.

Rafferty has helped Furman to a 12-0 start to the season and a spot in the national polls. The Paladins entered the Associated Press poll for the first time in school history on Dec. 3 and now sit 24th. Furman entered the USA Today Coaches poll on Monday for the first time in school history at No. 25. Furman is ranked third nationally in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25.

Furman’s start is the best for a SoCon squad since Lefty Driesell’s 1963-64 Davidson team opened 15-0 en route to a 22-4 campaign. The Paladins have won 19 of their last 20 games dating back to last season and 18 straight regular-season contests.

Furman faces its final nonconference test Friday at LSU – coached by former Chattanooga coach Will Wade – in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, at 8 p.m. Eastern. That contest will air on SECNetwork+.

Other nominees: Kaiden Rice (The Citadel), Daivien Williamson (ETSU), Francis Alonso (UNCG), Brandon Austin (Samford), Jonathan Scott (Chattanooga), Onno Steger (Western Carolina) and Cameron Jackson (Wofford).

Notes:

* Several big road games loom on the nonconference schedule this week. Mercer visits Florida and Western Carolina heads to No. 23 Iowa on Tuesday, while Samford takes on No. 3 Tennessee and Wofford faces No. 17 Mississippi State on Wednesday. Undefeated and 24th-ranked Furman visits LSU on Friday.

* Western Carolina, facing its first ranked opponent of the season when it takes on Iowa, got a career-high 18 points from Onno Steger in Saturday’s 86-59 loss at High Point.

* On Tuesday, Chattanooga visits UT Martin, which is led in scoring by Citadel transfer guard Preston Parks (13.8 points per game), who was the consensus 2016-17 SoCon Freshman of the Year. Parks had 20 points in the Skyhawks’ 80-62 loss at ETSU on Dec. 8 in his first outing against his former league.

* Florida will be Mercer’s second Power 5 opponent of the season. The Bears took NC State to the brink on Nov. 24, falling 78-74 behind 25 points from Djordje Dimitrijevic.

* At 8-2, The Citadel is off to its best 10-game start since the 2004-05 season. The eight wins are the most for the Bulldogs before Christmas in program history.

* UNCG hosts Radford on Tuesday trying to extend its school record for consecutive wins to 16 games.

* Samford’s 10-2 start is its best after 12 games since the 1960-61 season, when the Bulldogs went 23-1.

* Wofford’s Fletcher Magee hit two 3-pointers in the Terriers’ 92-49 win over UNC Asheville on Saturday, moving into second place in SoCon history with 397 to his credit for his career. He now trails only record-holder Stephen Curry, who hit 414 for Davidson from 2006-09. Magee, who recently scored his 2,000th career point, also became Wofford’s career scoring leader at the DI level in the game against the Bulldogs. He is fifth in school history overall with 2,014 points.

* Furman, which earned its first Associated Press national ranking in program history on Dec. 3, dropped on spot to No. 24 this week despite winning twice and picking up 19 points in the voting. The Paladins also moved into the USA Today Coaches poll for the first time in school history at No. 25 this week. Furman is the SoCon’s first ranked program since Davidson was No. 22 in the Dec. 15, 2008, poll.

* Furman, one of nine remaining undefeated NCAA Division I teams, is off to its best start in school history. At 12-0, Furman’s start is the best for a SoCon team since Lefty Driesell’s 1963-64 Davidson squad opened 15-0 en route to a 22-4 campaign. The Paladins have won 19 of their last 20 games dating back to last season and 18 straight regular-season contests. Furman owns wins over half of last year’s Final Four participants in Loyola Chicago and then-No. 8 Villanova.

* Furman’s Matt Rafferty and The Citadel’s Matt Frierson should be the league’s next members of the 1,000-point club, as Rafferty has 969 to his credit and Frierson 954.

* SoCon teams are a combined 48-6 at home.

* The SoCon continues to have three teams in the top 10 of the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25, making it the only league that make that claim. Furman is No. 3, trailing just Gonzaga and Buffalo, who are Nos. 8 and 14 in the AP poll, respectively. UNCG is No. 5 and Wofford is No. 7 in the mid-major poll. Samford, ETSU and The Citadel are also receiving votes.

* VMI sophomore Bubba Parham leads the league in scoring at 21.5 points per game this year. Should Parham finish the season in the top position, it would mark the third time in four seasons that a Keydet has done so, as QJ Peterson paced the SoCon in points per game in both 2015-16 and 2016-17.

* UNCG and Samford are the lone teams yet to open league play. The squads will square off on Dec. 22 in Birmingham, Alabama, in their SoCon openers.

* The Citadel ranks first in NCAA Division I in scoring offense (101.3 points per game) and made 3-pointers per game (14.8).

* ETSU is second in DI with 514 total rebounds and in rebounding margin with a differential of 13.8 per game. Redshirt junior Jeromy Rodriguez leads DI with 143 total rebounds and is third with 11.9 per game.

* Wofford senior Fletcher Magee is the leading active scorer in the SoCon, as the shooting guard has 2,014 career points to his credit. Magee, who scored a school-record 751 points last season, needs just 303 to enter the SoCon’s career top 10. Magee is also chasing Davidson great Stephen Curry for the SoCon’s career 3-point record. With 397 to his credit, Magee trails Curry’s record of 414 by just 17. Magee is 16th in NCAA DI history, while Curry is ninth (in just three years).

* Three SoCon teams – Mercer, UNCG and Wofford – earned postseason invites last season, giving the league multiple teams in postseason play for the 10th consecutive year. UNCG played in the NCAA Championship, while Mercer appeared in the CBI and Wofford played in the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament.

Subject: Big Ten Women’s Basketball Weekly Release – Dec. 18
To: <dawvoice3@gmail.com>

Attached is the Big Ten weekly women’s basketball release in PDF format, including updated statistics, schedules, television information, notes and more. In addition, a few partial notes are included below:

·         Nearly all Big Ten women’s basketball programs will be in action during the final week of non-conference play before the 2018-19 Big Ten season tips off Dec. 28, including several games on BTN Plus. Among those schools competing this week are three that will participate in holiday tournaments in Puerto Rico (Indiana), Las Vegas (Northwestern) and West Palm Beach, Florida (Ohio State). All BTN and BTN Plus games can also be seen on BTN’s digital extension, BTN2Go, and the FOX Sports app, while games on the ESPN family of networks are also available on WatchESPN and the ESPN app.

·         On Wednesday morning, Purdue will be the last of several Big Ten women’s basketball programs to hold a Field Trip Day this season, inviting more than 1,600 local school children to attend the Boilermakers’ game against Albany at Mackey Arena while learning more about academic achievement and aspiring to contribute positively in their community. Other Big Ten programs that held similar events this year include Illinois (season-high 2,364 fans vs. Alabama A&M on Nov. 7), Minnesota (7,835 vs. Incarnate Word on Dec. 5) and Northwestern (season-high 5,799 vs. Chicago State on Monday).

·         With all 14 schools currently posting winning or .500 records, the Big Ten continues to enjoy a strong composite start this year, having combined to post a .763 winning percentage (106-33) nearly six weeks into the 2018-19 season. That mark includes eight non-conference wins against ranked opponents by seven different Big Ten programs, most recently when Michigan State toppled No. 3/3 Oregon, 88-82 on Dec. 9 (the highest-ranked opponent MSU has defeated since April 3, 2005, when the Spartans defeated No. 3 Tennessee, 68-64 in the NCAA Women’s Final Four at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis).

·         For the second consecutive week, six Big Ten schools are ranked or receiving votes in the current Associated Press or USA Today/WBCA polls, including four in the Top 25, led by No. 5 (AP)/No. 5 (USA Today) Maryland. Minnesota, Iowa and Michigan State are also ranked in both polls, with the Golden Gophers at No. 13/16, the Hawkeyes at No. 16/15 and the Spartans at No. 22/22. Indiana is receiving votes in both polls, while Michigan is earning votes in the USA Today poll.

·         Indiana owns the nation’s longest active winning streak at 15 games and has won 24 of its last 26 games, highlighted by its six-game run to the WNIT title last spring. The Hoosiers are off to a 9-0 start this year, their second-best debut in the past 18 seasons. The only time in that span Indiana opened with a better record was 2013-14 (the season before current head coach Teri Moren took over), when the Hoosiers won their first 14 games.

·         Minnesota is 10-0 this season, marking the third-best start in program history and best since the Golden Gophers’ school-record 15-0 debut during their 2003-04 NCAA Final Four season. Minnesota also continues to hold its highest poll rankings since the 2005-06 season. The Golden Gophers last reached a higher AP poll position on Feb. 6, 2006 (11th) and a higher USA Today/WBCA rank on Feb. 13, 2006 (16th).

·         Michigan State is 9-1 this year following its 74-66 overtime win at Hartford on Sunday afternoon. It’s the Spartans’ best start to a season since 2012-13, when they began 13-1.

·         Illinois improved to 8-2 this season with its 74-57 win over SIU Edwardsville on Dec. 15. It’s the best start to a season for the Fighting Illini since 2009-10, when they also started 8-2.

·         Big Ten programs factor prominently in the NCAA statistical rankings as of Tuesday. Iowa is No. 2 in the nation in free throw percentage (.811) and third in both assists (22.2 apg.) and field goal percentage (.523), while Maryland is third in rebounding margin (+17.2 rpg.) and Wisconsin is third in field goal percentage defense (.314). In the individual rankings, the Big Ten holds the top two spots in field goal percentage with Iowa’s Megan Gustafson (.754) and Michigan’s Naz Hillmon (.747), with Gustafson also tied for the national lead in double-doubles (9) and second in scoring (24.7 ppg.), while Minnesota’s Taiye Bello is third in rebounding (13.2 rpg.).

·         Six Big Ten programs are ranked among the top 25 (and nine in the top 35) in the nation in average attendance as of Monday. Purdue leads the conference contingent at No. 8 with 6,546 fans per game, with Minnesota following at No. 12 (5,604), Michigan State at No. 15 (4,840), Ohio State at No. 19 (4,363), Iowa at No. 20 (4,301) and Maryland at No. 22 (3,936). Nebraska is next at No. 26 (3,674), followed by Wisconsin at No. 31 (3,090) and Indiana at No. 32 (3,086). Minnesota also drew the largest crowd in the country this season, with a school-record 14,625 fans selling out Williams Arena for the Golden Gophers’ season-opening win over New Hampshire on Nov. 9.

·         Purdue drew 10,086 fans for Sunday’s nationally-televised matchup with No. 25 South Carolina, the Boilermakers’ largest home crowd since Dec. 21, 2012, when 10,593 fans filled Mackey Arena for Purdue’s game against IUPUI.

·         Iowa’s Megan Gustafson, Michigan’s Hallie Thome and Penn State’s Teniya Page are among 30 candidates for the 2018-19 Senior CLASS Award, which is presented annually to the nation’s top senior women’s basketball student who embodies the award’s four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition. The candidate lists will be trimmed to 10 finalists in February with this year’s recipient announced at the NCAA Women’s Final Four in Tampa. Two students from current Big Ten schools have earned the Senior CLASS Award since its inception in 2001-02, with Iowa’s Samantha Logic the most recent honoree in 2014-15.

·         Big Ten women’s basketball programs produced 67 students that earned Academic All-Big Ten honors in 2017-18, the 11th consecutive season at least 45 women’s basketball students received the award.

·         The Big Ten returns to an 18-game conference schedule this year, with each school playing five opponents twice (home-and-away), while playing the other eight schools once (four at home, four on the road). Big Ten women’s basketball programs played 18 regular-season conference games for the first 12 seasons of Big Ten play (1982-83 through 1993-94) and returned to that format from 2007-08 to 2009-10 and again in 2014-15 and 2015-16.

·         Big Ten women’s basketball programs will be featured on national television at least 78 times during the 2018-19 season. BTN will televise at least 69 games and ESPN2 will carry nine contests. In addition, for the fifth consecutive year, every Big Ten women’s basketball conference game, including 126 regular-season contests and all 13 Big Ten Tournament games, will be produced and distributed by BTN, BTN Plus or an ESPN network.

LSU RANKED NO. 1 IN 2019 COLLEGIATE BASEBALL PRESEASON POLL

BATON ROUGE, La. — LSU is ranked No. 1 in the 2019 Collegiate Baseball newspaper preseason poll released Tuesday, marking the eighth straight season the Tigers will begin the year among the Top 10 teams in the nation.

The top ranking represents LSU’s first appearance at No. 1 in a preseason poll since 2009, when the Tigers claimed their sixth national championship. LSU has now earned a No. 1 ranking at some point during the season on seven different occasions in an 11-season span (2009-19).

“You know baseball season is getting close when Collegiate Baseball Newspaper comes out with their first poll. I believe we’re 58 days away from Opening Day,” said coach Paul Mainieri, entering his 13th season at LSU. “Just the thought of it being so close gets my blood pumping. I know our wonderful fans are as excited as I am about a new season and the possibilities of what it might bring.

“Being ranked No. 1 is always something in which I take a great deal of pride. There are 300 Division I baseball playing schools across the country and to think someone believes you are the best team in the land is inspiring.”

The 2019 Tigers return six position players who have filled everyday starting roles, including outfielders Antoine Duplantis, Zach Watson and Daniel Cabrera, and infielders Josh Smith, Brandt Broussard and Hal Hughes.

The pitching staff features junior right-hander Zack Hess, the Tigers’ No. 1 weekend starter in 2018, and sophomore right-hander Eric Walker, a 2017 Freshman All-American who was sidelined last season due to Tommy John surgery.

The staff is bolstered by the return of sophomore 2018 Freshman All-American right-hander Ma’Khail Hilliard, and the bullpen features a corps of outstanding right-handed relievers, including senior Caleb Gilbert, juniors Todd Peterson and Matthew Beck, and sophomore Devin Fontenot.

“I have a sense that we have something special brewing with this team,” Mainieri said. “Of course, having Hess, Watson, and Duplantis delay their pro careers for one more run at Omaha is very important. Getting Smith and Walker back this year after virtually missing all of last season due to injuries is vital to us, plus having other veterans like Cabrera, Peterson, Beck, Hilliard, Gilbert, Hughes, Broussard, and Fontenot providing the leadership that is so desperately needed.”

The Tigers’ talented 16-man recruiting class – rated No. 1 in the nation in September – is composed of nine pitchers and seven position players, and it contains seven players that have been chosen in an MLB Draft – outfielder Giovanni DiGiacomo, catcher Saul Garza, left-handed pitcher Easton McMurray, right-handed pitcher Landon Marceaux, right-handed pitcher Cole Henry, right-handed pitcher Jaden Hill and first baseman/outfielder CJ Willis.

Other new players to watch include infielders Drew Bianco, Gavin Dugas and Cade Beloso, catcher Brock Mathis and right-handed pitchers Riggs Threadgill and Chase Costello.

“To have such a tremendously talented new class of guys gives me a lot of confidence in this group,” Mainieri said. “Being around them also makes you aware that they carry themselves with a significant level of maturity and belief in themselves.”

LSU completed its fall practice session in November, and the team will begin preseason workouts on January 25. The Tigers open the 2019 season at 7 p.m. on Friday, February 15, versus Louisiana-Monroe in Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field.

LSU is one of three Southeastern Conference teams appearing in the Collegiate Baseball 2019 preseason Top 10, along with No. 2 Vanderbilt and No. 6 Florida.

Other SEC squads appearing in the Top 40 are No. 11 Ole Miss, No. 13 Georgia, No. 23 Auburn, No. 25 Arkansas, No. 27 Mississippi State and No. 29 Texas A&M.

LSU’s non-conference opponents appearing in the poll are No. 14 Texas and No. 38 Louisiana-Lafayette. The Tigers will play a total of 25 regular-season games against teams appearing in the Collegiate Baseball Top 40.

“I know that it’s simply subjective at this point, and we’d certainly rather be No. 1 at the end of the season,” Mainieri explained. “However, this honor does create a huge amount of motivation for our players and staff as we prepare for the season. And I hope it gets our fans fired up, too. The way I look at it is that being ranked No. 1 at any point of the season is better than not being ranked No. 1.”

Illinois Ranked No. 34 by Collegiate Baseball

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — The Illinois baseball team is ranked No. 34 in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Preseason Top 40, the publication announced Tuesday.

Preseason All-American 2B Michael Massey highlights a strong core of returners that includes C Jeff Korte, SS Ben Troike, 3B Grant Van Scoy, DH Michael Michalak, OF Zac Taylor, OF Jack Yalowitz and starting pitchers that combined for 52 of 53 starts. Illinois must replace holes at first base and outfield, where Bren Spillane and Doran Turchin departed for the MLB Draft and closer, which Joey Gerber vacated for pro ball as well.

Illinois returns 97 percent of its pitching wins, 98 percent of its pitching starts, 91 percent of its innings pitched, 75 percent of its hits, 69 percent of its runs and 48 percent of its home runs from last year. In 2018, Illinois finished 33-20 and 15-9 in the Big Ten, while finishing fourth in the conference and reaching the Big Ten Tournament semifinals.

Illinois also brought in its first-ever top 25 recruiting class this season, the current freshmen. D1Baseball ranked the class No. 22 and Baseball America rated Illinois’ recruiting class at No. 24.

The Big Ten has three teams in the Collegiate Baseball preseason top 40, including the Illini, No. 28 Minnesota and No. 39 Michigan.

Cowboys Set for Reno Tournament of Champions

LARAMIE, Wyo. (Dec. 18, 2018) – The 18th-ranked Wyoming wrestling team travels to Reno, Nev., this week to compete in its final regular-season tournament at the Reno Tournament of Champions on Thursday at 10 a.m. MT.

In the Lineup

Along with a number of Pokes set to compete unattached, a slew of Cowboys will be making the trip to Reno to compete at the event, including:

125: Cole Verner

133: Mark McConnell

141: Sam Turner

149: Jaron Jensen

157: Dewey Krueger

174: Hayden Hastings, Casey Randles, Anthony Lombardo

184: Carless Looney

197: Cale Davidson

HWT: Brian Andrews

Tournament Coverage

Fans can stream all of the action this weekend live on FloWrestling. Live scoring and brackets will be available on FloArena. Fans can also follow live updates on Twitter at @WyoWrestle.

From Coach Branch

“It’s a one-day tournament, so it’s not a great replication of what we’ll see in the postseason. It’s still a good experience for our guys because it will be a long day with a lot of matches and you don’t get that very often. It be a great test for our guys.”

“I think Oklahoma State is bringing their starting team, and we’ve already seen them but they haven’t had their starting team there for quite a few years. That will definitely increase the toughness of the field. It’s all about the matches and experience. We’re actually going to keep a couple of our more experienced guys home—Branson (Ashworth) and Montorie (Bridges). They’re on pace to get, probably, too many matches for guys that know what they’re doing. We’re going to use this for our young guys to continue to hone what they’re doing and make improvements.”

Last Time Out

The Cowboys (3-2, 1-1 Big 12) are coming off picking up their first Big 12 win earlier this month in the Arena-Auditorium, overwhelming No. 19 North Dakota State, 29-6. Pokes took eight of the 10 bouts from the Bison, including bonus point wins from Montorie Bridges, Dewey Krueger and Carless Looney.

Tournament Field

Aside from the Cowboys, the 2018 Reno Tournament of Champions field features teams from all different levels of college wrestling, including DI foes No. 3 Oklahoma State, No. 10 Arizona State, Cal Poly, Michigan State and The Citadel.

Last Time in Reno…

Thanks to five top-three finishes, the Wyoming wrestling program took second place at the Reno Tournament of Champions last season.

Senior Bryce Meredith (141 pounds), junior Branson Ashworth (165 pounds) and redshirt freshman Montorie Bridges (133 pounds) led the Pokes with first-place finishes at their respective weights, while seniors Archie Colgan (157 pounds) and Chaz Polson (184 pounds) took third for the Brown and Gold. UW racked up 140 points to finish behind No. 6 North Carolina State (192 points) in the team standings. Of Wyoming’s 19 wrestlers that competed on Sunday, 14 recorded a bonus-point victory in their opening round match.

Wyoming has finished in the top four at the event each of the last three years.

Reenan Named ACC Wrestler of the Week for Third Time

Notched a top-three win over Nebraska to move up to #4 in the rankings at 184 pounds

RALEIGH, N.C. – For the third time this season (in seven total weeks), and for the second consecutive week, NC State’s R-So. Nick Reenan was named the ACC Wrestler of the Week.

At 184 pounds against Nebraska in Reynolds this weekend, Reenan took out 2018 All-American #3 Taylor Ventz 8-6. Reenan scored all three of the takedowns in the bout, and a late reversal secured the win.

With the Wolfpack down 14-3 after the first five bouts against #11 Nebraska, Reenan’s win was the first of four in the final five after the intermission as NC State completed the 18-17 comeback win to improve to 6-0 on the season.

Reenan improves to 7-0 on the season, 3-0 versus ranked foes, and 2-0 against top-10 opponents.

Reenan was named co-ACC Wrestler of the Week this week, sharing the award with UNC’s Chip Ness who also scored an 8-6 win over Ventz the night before Reenan.

Reenan, who entered the weekend ranked No. 5, defeated Venz by an 8-6 count on Sunday afternoon to help the No. 7 Wolfpack edge the No. 11 Cornhuskers, 18-17. Venz is a returning All-American who placed fourth at the 2018 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships.
It marks the third ACC weekly honor of the season and the second in as many weeks for Reenan, while Ness was recognized for the first time this season.
Ness, who also defeated Venz at the 2018 NCAAs, improved to 8-4 for this season with Saturday night’s win. The victory by the redshirt senior from Duluth, Georgia, tied the dual match with the Huskers before Nebraska scrapped to pull out the win over the No. 12 Tar Heels in the latter matches.
Reenan had all three takedowns in Sunday’s match (Venz had zero), and a reversal late in the third period sealed the win. NC State was down 14-3 before Reenan began a run of four Wolfpack wins in the comeback team victory. Reenan improved to 7-0 on the season, 4-0 in duals. The Dallas, Texas, sophomore is now 3-0 versus ranked foes this season, with a pair of top-10 wins, and Reenan has yet to concede a takedown.
Reenan inched up to No. 4 in this week’s InterMat 184-pound national rankings, while Ness moved up two spots to No. 11.
