DURHAM, N.C.—For the first time in program history Duke wrestling will open a campaign ranked in the top 25 by the National Wrestling Coaches Association. The Blue Devils were voted 24th in the poll released Wednesday.

Duke opens the 2018-19 season Sunday, Nov. 4 at the Hokie Open. The Blue Devils are one of four ACC programs to be ranked in the top 25. NC State leads the way at No. 8, while Virginia Tech is 11th. Tobacco Road rival North Carolina is 23rd.

The Blue Devils return a wealth of talent with eight starters back in the lineup, including the quartet of Finesilver brothers who all qualified for the NCAA Championships a year ago. In addition, veteran Alec Schenk and sophomore Kaden Russell are poised to have breakout seasons, while sophomore Jeremiah Reitz has a valuable year under his belt.

Under seventh-year head coach, Glen Lanham, the Blue Devils are coming off of their best NCAA finish in program history, taking 22nd at the NCAA Championships. Under

Lanham, Duke has reached a number of firsts, including beating at 12th-ranked North Carolina squad, climbing into the InterMat top 25 rankings for the first time and crowning the first three-time All-American.

Redshirt senior Mitch Finesilver paces the team with a preseason No. 8 ranking at 149 pounds. A three-time NCAA qualifiers, Mitch is aiming to become Duke’s fourth All-American. He will be tested immediately when he travels to the NWCA All-Star Classic to take on No. 1 Matt Kolodzik of Princeton Friday, Nov. 2. Sophomore Matt Finesilver is 18th at 174 pounds after posting a 26-11 record as a rookie.

Overall, Duke is set to face four of the top 25 – the three ACC squads and No. 25 Appalachian State – in duals this season. After the Hokie Open, the Blue Devils travel to the Keystone Classic and close out November at the Cliff Keen Open in Las Vegas.

Duke finished last season 7-7 in duals and fourth at the ACC Championships. The Blue Devils’ first home dual comes Jan. 6 against Penn.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
BUDAPEST, Hungary – Former Panther Joe Colon became UNI wrestling’s first medalist at the World Championships, giving Team USA a lead in the standings.

Colon, a 2014 All-American for UNI, closed out his first Senior Worlds with a spectacular performance in the bronze-medal round, scoring a 13-2 technical fall over Mohammedbagher Yakhkeshi of Iran. Colon was able to secure a 5-1 lead in the second period, including two takedowns. He blasted the match open with a counter takedown, followed by a series of gut wrenches, until he had the 10-point difference for the technical fall.

Colon reached the semifinals of 61 kilogram-/134 pound-weight class Saturday, when he was defeated by eventual champion Yowlys Bonne Rodriguez of Cuba, 9-4.

Colon took third at the 2014 NCAA championships as a Panther and was an NJCAA national champion for Iowa Central Community College. He is now a volunteer assistant coach for Fresno State.

David Taylor (State College, Pa./Nittany Lion WC) capped off a dominant performance at 86 kg/189 lbs. with a gold-medal victory for the United States on Sunday night at the World Wrestling Championships at the Papp Laszlo Arena.

Also claiming bronze medals were Jordan Burroughs (Lincoln, Neb./Sunkist Kids/Nebraska WTC) at 74 kilograms/163 pounds and Nick Gwiazdowski, Raleigh, N.C. (Titan Mercury WC/Wolfpack RTC) at 125 kilograms/275 pounds.

In the first four weight classes completed, USA had 70 points in the team standings, with Russia in second place with 65 points. The U.S. has put two wrestlers in the finals on Monday night with J’den Cox at 92 kilograms and Kyle Dake at 79 kilograms, and Thomas Gilman is in a bronze bout at 57 kilograms. The U.S. team is guaranteed at least 50 more points from those three athletes. In 2017, USA beat Russia by one point in the team race.

The United States has three athletes competing for medals on Monday night, and two more athletes who start their competition on Monday morning.

The tournament is being broadcast live on Trackwrestling.

In the first overtime, Nyack outshot Goldey-Beacom 2-1 but the game remained tied. Overtime number two was again dominated by Nyack, which outshot GBC 2-0. Maguire’s late second half goal was the tying goal that helped the Lightning earn a tie at the end of two overtimes.
