5 Hawkeyes Advance to Semifinals
EVANSTON, Illinois — The University of Iowa advanced five wrestlers to the semifinal round of the Midlands Championship on Thursday night at Welsh-Ryan Arena. The Hawkeyes went 5-4 during quarterfinal competition with both top-seeded wrestlers, Thomas Gilman (125) and Brandon Sorensen (149), recording bonus-point wins.
Iowa leads the team race with 85.5 points, followed by Nebraska (78.5), Rutgers (64.5), Arizona State (62.5), Illinois (58.5), and NC State (55).
Gilman, a two-time and defending Midlands champion, continued to rack up bonus points for the Hawkeyes, delivering a 23-7 technical fall over eighth-seeded Lucas Malmberg (Messiah). It is Gilman’s sixth tech fall of the season and 12th consecutive win overall.
Sorensen, the defending champion at 149, secured his place in the semifinals with a 12-4 major decision over Ryan Deakin (unat. Northwestern). The win cements Sorensen as the ninth Hawkeye included in the prestigious 20-in-4 club, an honor for those wrestlers who achieve 20 or more wins at the Midlands Championships over four years.
At 157, second-seeded Michael Kemerer continued his drive towards the championships with an 11-2 major decision over Purdue’s Alex Griffin. The win was Kemerer’s third bonus-point win of the day and secured him a place in the semifinals facing third-seeded Jason Tsirtsis (unat. Arizona State).
Alex Meyer earned his second Midlands semifinal berth in as many years after tallying an 11-2 victory over Harvard’s Josef Johnson. He is set to face No. 3 seed Lelund Weatherspoon (Iowa State) for the second time this season. Meyer defeated Weatherspoon a 5-3 on Dec. 10 and is 2-0 all-time against the Cyclone.
Third-seeded Sam Stoll advanced to his second consecutive semifinals appearance after posting a 6-2 decision over No. 6 seed Ross Larson (Oklahoma).
Topher Carton (141), Kaleb Young (165), Alex Marinelli (165), and Sammy Brooks (184) dropped quarterfinal matches and will compete Friday in the consolation round. Phillip Laux (133), Joey Gunther (165), and Cash Wilcke (184) lost consolation matches Thursday night and were eliminated from the tournament.
Session III of the Midlands Championships is set to begin at 12 p.m. (CT) Friday. Updated team standings and complete tournament brackets are available throughout the tournament at nusports.com and on trackwrestling.com.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Sophomore Myles Martin and true freshman Luke Pletcher each took part in the opening rounds of the 54th Ken Kraft Midlands Championships on Thursday at Welsh-Ryan Arena on the campus of Northwestern. Martin and Pletcher are representing the Scarlet and Gray at one of the most prestigious tournaments, which this year includes 39 teams and more than 400 wrestlers.
THE STORT STORY
Martin and Pletcher each won their first three matches of the day but ultimately lost in the quarterfinals to fall into the consolation bracket at 141 and 184 lbs., respectively. They resume action tomorrow at 1 p.m. ET. Action can be seen live on BTN2Go.com.
PLETCHER GETS WINS NO. 15, 16, 17
In his opening match of the day, Pletcher (17-1) turned up the heat in the third period. He took a four point lead (6-2) against Mousa Jodeh of Illinois and stretched it into a 12-3 major decision by scoring an escape, two takedowns and tacked on a riding time point.
Pletcher moved on to a second round matchup against Angelo Silvestro of SIU Edwardsville where he once again broke open a close match in the third period. Leading 4-2, Pletcher scored a quick escape and then takedown to take a 7-2 lead and then added another takedown less than a minute later. He also tacked on a riding time bonus point for the final 10-6 decision.
Against ninth-seeded Kyle Springer of Eastern Michigan, Pletcher fell behind 4-2 at the end of the first after being taken down twice, but turned the tables in the second with two takedowns of his own to knot the score at 6-6. Pletcher went ahead 7-6 on an opening escape in the third and then scored the decisive points on a takedown while accumulating a riding time bonus point.
Pletcher made a big statement in the opening 10 seconds of his quarterfinal match against top-seeded and third-ranked Matthew Kolodzik of Princeton, getting a takedown immediately for a quick 2-0 lead. He couldn’t, however, sustain the momentum, giving up a reversal, escape and two takedowns over the next two periods before eventually falling 9-3.
MARTIN ADVANCES TO QUARTERS
Martin (16-2) was pushed to the limit in his first bout of the championships as he needed overtime to knock off Anthony Mancini of Franklin and Marshall, 12-10. Martin led 8-5 entering the third period and quickly stretched it to 10-5 on a takedown, but Mancini scored on an escape, takedown and stalling point to knot it at 10-10. In the sudden victory period, Martin finished on a takedown with just 11 seconds remaining.
Martin had a decidedly easier time in the second round against Carson Powell of Iowa State, jumping out to a 4-1 first period lead and then scoring on a reversal to start the second that made the score 6-1. He took Powell down one more time in the period and then twice in the third period all while accumulating over 3:00 of riding time for a 14-4 major decision.
In the Round of 16, Martin met a familiar Big Ten foe – Purdue’s Tanner Lynde. Martin worked two first period takedowns, and on the second got Lynde on his back and finished the fall in 2:31. It was his fourth fall of the season, tying him for second most on the team.
Against seventh-seeded and 10th-ranked Jack Dechow of Old Dominion in the quarterfinals, Martin was knotted in a 4-4 tie after Dechow’s takedown to end the second period was overturned. Dechow escaped to begin the third and then scored the decisive takedown with under 30 seconds remaining for a 7-4 decision.
