Missed Opportunities Drop Baysox

Bowie, Md. – The Altoona Curve scored seven runs in the fifth and sixth innings to rally from behind for a 9-4 win after the Baysox had opened a 4-1 lead after four innings with several chances to make it larger.

Both teams struggled early in the game with runners in scoring positions, as a combined 22 runners were left on base in the game. The Baysox loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the third inning but came away with no runs. The team came back the next inning and scored a pair of runs, but had a chance for more as a Quincy Latimore had a possible three-run homer robbed at the wall by Altoona’s Austin Meadows.

Tucker Nathans got things started in the first with a one-out home run to right-center field off Altoona starting pitcher Tyler Eppler to make the score 1-0.

Bowie kept the runs coming in the bottom of the second inning. Quincy Latimore drew a lead-off walk and moved to third base on a single to right field from Jeff Kemp. With one out, Drew Dosch singled to center field to plate Latimore and give the Baysox a 2-0 lead.

Altoona got on the board in the top of the third inning against Baysox starter Jason Garcia. Chris Diaz drew a lead-off walk and Harold Ramirez was then hit-by-a-pitch. After a groundout advanced both runners, Austin Meadows plated Diaz with a sacrifice fly to make the score 2-1.

The Baysox added to the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Dosch hit a lead-off double down the right field line and moved to third base on a Julio Borbon bunt single. Nathans brought Dosch home with a sacrifice fly and Borbon then stole second base with two outs. Garabez Rosa followed with a single to left field that scored Borbon and extended the Baysox lead to 4-1.

Altoona’s rally began in the top of the fifth inning after the home-run saving catch by Meadows. With one out, Meadows hit a solo home run to right field. Jose Osuna was then hit-by-a-pitch and Jin-De Jhang followed with a single to right field. A wild pitch moved both runners up one base before Eric Wood plated a run with a sacrifice fly to make the score 4-3.

The Curve came back to take a commanding lead with five runs in the top of the sixth inning. Facing reliever Jon Keller, Barrett Barnes and Diaz hit back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners. After a pop-out, reliever Donnie Hart replaced Keller on the mound and surrendered and RBI double to Anderson Feliz. Meadows then singled to right field to plate a run before an intentional walk loaded the bases. Jhang doubled to right field to plate two runs as the third Baysox reliever of the inning came on to pitch, Genison Reyes. A sacrifice fly from Wood brought home the final run of the inning as Altoona gained the 8-4 lead.

The final Curve run came in the top of the ninth inning as Jonathan Schwind hit a solo home run to left field off Baysox reliever Jason Stoffel to make the score 9-4.

Garcia threw five innings and allowed three runs on five hits and two walks with two strikeouts and three hit batters in the loss. Keller recorded just one out in the sixth inning while allowing two runs on two hits. Hart allowed three runs on three hits and a walk in the sixth inning while not recording an out. Reyes threw the next 2.2 innings, not allowing a run on two hits and a strikeout. Stoffel pitched the ninth inning and allow one run on two hits with one strikeout.

Eppler picked up the win for Altoona, throwing five innings and allowing four runs on nine hits while striking out four and walking three batters.

Tuesday, the Baysox open a three day series against the Richmond Flying Squirrels that includes a doubleheader Wednesday. The team returns home Friday, June 3 for a weekend home series against the Akron RubberDucks.

The 2016 Bowie Baysox season is presented by Money One Federal Credit Union. The Baysox 2016 season is underway. Don’t miss a minute of the action as the Baysox defend their 2015 Eastern League Championship. Single game tickets are now on sale at www.baysox.com.

Subject: Bakersfield Blaze Game Recap 05-30-16: Blaze Mount Monster Memorial Day Comeback, Win 8-7
To:

Memorial Day marked the end of a 7-game homestand for the Bakersfield Blaze and it might have come at the perfect time. The Inland Empire 66ers hung two crooked numbers on starter Anthony Misiewicz, but the Blaze erased a six-run deficit to shock Inland Empire, 8-7
Misiewicz was the victim of two three-run home runs hit by the 66ers, but he wasn’t leaving with a loss on this day.
Zach Houchins touched Misiewicz up with a three-run homer in the second inning for his sixth long ball of the season to make it 3-0 Inland Empire. One inning later Michael Strentz drove a ball over the left field wall for his third homer of the campaign, a three-run shot, to push the lead to 6-0.
Two pitches got the better of Misiewicz as he gave up six runs, on five hits, in just four innings.
Despite Inland Empire’s red-hot start, Bakersfield would not go away.
The Blaze comeback train got rolling in the third inning when Drew Jackson doubled home Joe DeCarlo with a shot to center field that was lost in the sun by Zach Welz. Jackson’s day was far from over and his teammates rallied behind him.
Chantz Mack hit a solo home run to right field for his sixth of the season to make it 6-2 66ers in the fourth.
Back to work in the fifth inning, Bakersfield crept even closer. Justin Seager led things off with a single followed by a Drew Jackson double. With the infield playing back Aaron Barbosa grounded out to second scoring Seager as the lead dwindled down to 6-3. Jay Baum made it 6-4 when his sac fly to right scored Jackson before Mack singled home Petty, who was plunked on the helmet by a pitch. A 6-0 advantage was now cut to 6-5 at the end of five.
With the 66ers up 6-5 and two outs in the sixth, Justin Seager started the next rally by walking. After Drew Jackson’s double, Aaron Barbosa singled to score both runners and give the Blaze their first lead of the day at 7-6. Bakersfield would add one more in the 8th on a pair of walks and Jay Baum’s second sacrifice fly of the game, and the run would prove crucial when the Sixers got a solo homer in the 9th, but the Blaze held on for the one-run win.
Vinny Nittoli picked up his first win of the season with two scoreless innings of relief and Kyle Schepel earned his fourth save in five attempts as the Blaze and 66ers split the four-game series.
Drew Jackson led the furious offensive output going 3-4, 3 2B, 3R, and an RBI.
The Blaze head on the road after a day off for a seven game voyage north through Stockton and San Jose. Dave Gascon will have the call, and all seven games will be available at BakersfieldBlaze.com and via TuneIn Radio.

BOWIE, Md. – Austin Meadows stole a home run and helped spark an offensive rally with his bat as the Altoona Curve came from behind to defeat the Bowie Baysox, 9-4, on Monday afternoon at Prince George’s Stadium.

The Curve (28-21) took three out of the four games in the series from the defending champion Baysox (19-30).

Meadows finished the game 3-for-3 with a homer, three RBIs, two runs scored, a walk and two stolen bases. He also robbed what would have been a three-run homer from former Curve Quincy Latimore.

With two runners on and the Curve trailing 4-1 in the bottom of the fourth, Latimore hit a deep drive to center field, but Meadows sprinted back to the wall, reached over the fence and caught the ball to end the inning.

In the next inning, Meadows crushed his first regular-season Double-A homer off of Bowie starter Jason Garcia over the right-field wall and out of the ballpark to close the gap to two in the fifth.

Two pitches later, Garcia hit Jose Osuna with a pitch. Later in the inning, Eric Wood brought him in to score with a sacrifice fly to bring the Curve within a run.

After back-to-back singles to open the sixth, Anderson Feliz hit an RBI double off Jon Keller (Loss, 0-1) to plate the tying run, and came in to score on a single by Meadows, putting the Curve in front, 5-4.

Jin-De Jhang added a two-run double and Wood hit another sacrifice fly to cap a five-run sixth inning, stretching the Curve lead to 8-4.

Celebrating his 26th birthday, Jon Schwind clubbed a solo home run in the ninth inning.

The Altoona bullpen combined for four scoreless innings to finish the day. Lefty Jared Lakind worked through the sixth and seventh, allowing two hit and a walk while striking out two. He has not allowed a run over his last 15.2 innings and has 11 consecutive scoreless appearances.

Dovydas Neveraukas worked perfectly through the eighth and ninth innings, striking out two batters. He has not allowed a run in his last 12 outings, a span of 17.0 scoreless innings in a row.

Tucker Nathans gave the Baysox the lead with a solo homer in the bottom of the first. Drew Dosch knocked an RBI single to center to push the lead to 2-0 in the second. Meadows got the Curve on the board with a sacrifice fly in the third, but the Baysox added two runs in the fourth against Altoona starter Tyler Eppler (Win, 3-3).

Eppler lasted five innings and allowed four runs on nine hits and walked three batters, matching a career high. He finished his outing with a 1-2-3 fifth inning.

Altoona manager Joey Cora was ejected by third-base umpire Paul Clemons after arguing in the fifth inning when Garcia hit Osuna with a pitch, the third Curve batter that he had drilled in the game. After warnings were issued to both teams, Bowie manager Gary Kendall was ejected for arguing with home plate umpire Scott Costello, just seconds after Cora was tossed.

The fifth-inning homer by Meadows was his first since the first game of last year’s Western Division Series, when the Pirates’ second-ranked prospect hit a game-tying homer in the bottom of the ninth inning in the Curve’s seven-run comeback win over the Baysox.

After hitting .192 through his first 21 games this year, Meadows is currently on an eight-game hitting streak, lifting his average to .277. Over the streak, the outfielder is batting .500 (14-for-28) with a home run, four doubles and a triple. He has five multi-hit games during the streak, including nine hits over his last four games.

The Curve head to Akron to open a three-game series against the RubberDucks on Tuesday night. RHP David Whitehead (2-4, 5.45) will be on the mound for Altoona, with lefty Shawn Morimando (8-0, 1.65) pitching for Akron. First pitch at Canal Park is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.

The Curve return to PNG Field on Friday for Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood Night, featuring the Daniel Tiger Plays Ball Figurine Giveaway to the first 1,000 fans ages 10 & under, presented by the Altoona Grand Hotel. The night will also feature a spectacular fireworks show. For tickets and more information, visit AltoonaCurve.com, call 877.99.CURVE or stop by the PNG Field box office.

No Quit Hawkeyes Rally Past Ohio State

Iowa trails 4-0 in bottom of 9th; wins 5-4 in extra innings in walk-off fashion

OMAHA, Neb. — Mason McCoy’s walk-off RBI single in the 10th inning completed a five-run rally, as the University of Iowa fought back from a 4-0 ninth-inning deficit to defeat fourth-seeded Ohio State, 5-4, in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament on Friday afternoon at TD Ameritrade Park.

The win keeps the Hawkeyes in the winner’s bracket, where it will face either Maryland or Indiana on Saturday morning — weather permitting.  It was Rick Heller’s 100th career victory as Iowa’s head coach.

“I couldn’t be prouder of the guys,” said Heller, whose team improved to 2-23 when trailing after eight innings. “It’s kind of the story of the season. A lot of times we had the opportunity to give up and assume it was over. It goes to show you what you can do if you never give up.

“(OSU starter John) Havird pitched well, tip our hat to him. I felt like at some point if we stuck to our plan they’d start falling for us, and they did in the ninth.”

Iowa was down to its final three outs when Ohio State went to its bullpen after starter John Havird stifled the Hawkeyes for eight innings, scattering two hits and fanning four in an efficient 95-pitch outing.

Senior Tyler Peyton started the inning with a single to centerfield — just the third Hawkeye hit of the day — against reliever Seth Kinker.  Seniors Nick Roscetti and Joel Booker followed with first-pitch hits to load the bases before junior Mason McCoy plated Iowa’s first run with a fourth-straight single.

After a Daniel Aaron Moriel double play ball plated a second run, making the score 4-2, sophomore Austin Guzzo closed the gap to 4-3 with an RBI single up the middle, ending Kinker’s day.  Pinch-hitter Jimmy Frankos put the tying run in scoring position, reaching on a hit-by-pitch against Michael Horejsei.

Ohio State summoned its closer, Yianni Pavlopoulos, and junior Devin Pickett stepped to the plate with the game in the balance.  The outfielder produced, fisting an RBI single to left center field to tie the game at four. It was Pickett’s first career RBI.

“I am proud of Devin,” said Heller. “He hasn’t had a chance to play much this year. It’s another example of instead of complaining and whining he became the best teammate he could be and helped this team every opportunity he had any way he could.

“He comes in and gets a big hit. Jimmy came in and found a way to get on base. It was a great team effort and I am proud of our guys.”

The Buckeyes threatened in the top of the 10th, putting two runners on against UI reliever Josh Martsching, but the right-hander got a fly out and struck out Jacob Bosiokovic looking to keep the momentum in Iowa’s favor.

Peyton was in the middle of the rally in the 10th, drawing a leadoff walk before Roscetti put down a sacrifice bunt and Peyton was safe when Pavlopoulos air-mailed the ball into center field.  After Booker got beaned to load the bases, McCoy ripped a 1-1 pitch into the right centerfield gap to send the Hawkeyes to their third walk-off victory of the season.

“Our fans did a nice job and showed up,” said Heller. “They were behind us all day. In those later innings, it felt like a home-field advantage and the Hawkeye fans came out for us. They were loud and made a lot of noise. That helped the rally.”

Martsching (2-0) earned the victory, allowing one hit and striking out a pair in the 10th.  Peyton allowed three runs on five hits over seven innings, fanning five, and senior Luke Vandermaten allowed one run on four hits in two innings.

The Buckeyes grabbed the early lead in the fourth, when Craig Nennig scored on a Troy Kuhn fielder’s choice.  Peyton snared a grounder and tried to start a double play, but Ronnie Dawson’s slide broke up twin-killing.

Ohio State extended its lead in the fifth, using three straight singles to load the bases before Peyton hit Nick Sergakis to knock in the second run.  Nennig’s sacrifice fly pushed the lead to 3-0, and the Buckeyes added an insurance run in the ninth on a Tre’ Gantt RBI single.

Iowa finished with nine hits in the game — seven coming in the final two innings.  Peyton (2-for-4, 2 runs) and McCoy (2-for-5, 2 RBIs) tallied multi-hit games. McCoy extended his hitting streak to 11 games.

“We needed to find a way to win that one if we had a realistic shot to win the tournament to be able to come back and do that gives us a legit shot,” said Heller.

Curve Walk Around the Baysox

Bowie, Md. – Inconsistent hitting on the offensive side and control issues by the pitching staff continued to plague the Baysox as the team fell to Altoona, 6-1, in the series opener Friday night. The Baysox managed just five hits and grounded into three double plays, ending each rally before it had a chance to materialize.

Altoona wasted no time, scoring in the first inning. Harold Ramirez led off the game with a ground ball single to center field off Baysox starter David Hess. Erich Weiss then drew a walk but was put-out at second base when Austin Meadows reached on a fielder’s choice that advanced Ramirez to third base. Ramirez then came home after a throwing error by Chance Sisco on a stolen base by Austin Meadows to give the Curve a 1-0 lead.

The Curve would strike again in the top of the fourth inning. For the fourth consecutive inning, Altoona had their lead-off man get a hit. Stetson Allie hit a lead-off home run to left-center field to give the Curve a 2-0 lead.

The Baysox finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth frame. Julio Borbon led off the inning with a double to right field off Altoona starter Cory Dickson. With one out, Chance Sisco was hit-by-a-pitch. Garabez Rosa then followed with a double to right field to bring home a run and cut the Altoona lead in half, 2-1.

David Hess was replaced by reliever Jon Keller in the top of the sixth inning. Keller hit Stetson Allie on his first pitch to lead off the inning. Barrett Barnes followed with a single to left field and a Chris Diaz sacrifice bunt moved both runners up one base. Ramirez followed suit with a single of his own to center field that brought two runs home. He moved to third base on the play after a dropped throw error from second baseman Jeff Kemp. Reliever Jayson Aquino made his first appearance out of the bullpen this year as he replaced Keller on the mound and surrendered a RBI single to Weiss that gave the Curve a 5-1 lead.

Altoona added an insurance run in the top of the ninth inning. Jose Osuna hit a one-out single to center field and scored on a two-out Eric Wood double to center field to make the score 6-1.

Hess threw five innings and allowed two runs on five hits and five walks while striking out one in the loss. Keller recorded just one out in the sixth inning while allowing three runs on two hits and a hit batter. Aquino threw the final 3.2 innings and allowed one run on three hits while striking out four batters.

Dickson threw seven innings and allowed one run on five hits while striking out three and walking four in the win for the Curve.

CURVE, Pa. – Stetson Allie homered and Cody Dickson pitched into the eighth inning as the Altoona Curve cruised to a 6-1 win over the Bowie Baysox in the series opener on Friday night at Prince George’s Stadium.

The Curve (26-20) have now won 15 of their last 19 games, while the defending E.L. champion Baysox have dropped 14 of 18.

Allie launched a solo homer in the fourth inning against Bowie starter David Hess (Loss, 2-3) to extend the Altoona lead to 2-0. It was the 42nd of his Altoona career, moving him ahead of Ray Sadler for third in franchise history. He now trails only Adam Hyzdu and Josh Bonifay on the all-time list, both of whom had 55 in their careers.

The Curve opened the scoring in the first inning when Austin Meadows stole second base and a throwing error by Bowie catcher Chance Sisco allowed Harold Ramirez to score from third.

Bowie plated a run in the bottom of the fourth against Dickson (Win, 3-2) on an RBI single by Garabez Rosa, but it was the only damage of the night against the Curve left-hander. Dickson finished the night with a season-best seven innings and allowed one run on five hits.

The Curve padded the lead with a two-run double by Ramirez and an RBI single by Erich Weiss in the sixth. Eric Wood brought in a run in the ninth with a double.

Dickson came out to begin the seventh, but was removed after a lead-off walk. Edgar Santana replaced him and finished the game by retiring all six batters he faced.

Ramirez finished the game with two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored. He is now hitting .382 in the month of May with eight extra-base hits and 13 RBIs.

The Curve and Baysox continue the series on Saturday night at Prince George’s Stadium. Right-hander Clay Holmes (3-4, 5.24) will be on the mound for Altoona, countered by Bowie lefty John Means, who will make his Double-A debut. First pitch is scheduled 6:35 p.m.
