Philadelphia Union vs. Montreal Impact Post Game Quote Sheet – June 27, 2015

Philadelphia Union head coach Jim Curtin

Jim Curtin Post Game Interview (vs. Montreal)

Opening Remarks

A wild, game end to end. I thought we started the game well in the first 20-25 minutes. I thought we were good. We hit he goal, they came at us a little bit, Piatti started to find space between our mid field and back line, obviously he’s a special player. To see him now in our first game against them, he’s very good. He gets the goal for them kind of from nothing. He was the first shot they had on goal. You get a little bit of momentum and push the game a little bit at the end of the half. Talk about pressing the game in a smart way, and continuing to push. Disappointing to give up the second goal, it was a mistake and Jack pushed us for it. In moments when that happens you’re hoping that maybe Richie can bail you out or Brian can make his big save for you but credit to our guys, they fought hard. They pushed and got the tying goal and then we go up a man and it seems like we have all the momentum in the world and kind of a roller coaster of a night for Ayuk, a young player who will hopefully learn from this. Tough tackle to take. His first yellow card is not a yellow card so I think that put him in a bad spot but when you know you have a yellow you cant leave your feet like that and put it in the referees hand. Difficult, dropped two points tonight so disappointed in that regard.

On balancing out the good and the bad with Eric Ayuk

There were obviously some great moments, the goal. We thought that that was a match up we could have him go at their outside backs on the night. He did that to a certain degree and then unfortunate for him, again I have to say the first yellow is one where he actually gets the ball first and it’s almost like he’s passing it backwards and they sell the follow through pretty well but it’s not a foul yet alone a yellow card. Again he’s got to be smart playing on a yellow card, I thought we had a lot of momentum at that stage once we tie it up and had about 20 minutes to really press the game and create chances which we were doing all night. I saw the stats that they had 38 clearances inside the 18 so difficult that we didn’t get the goal but at the same time we dodged a bullet or two at the end there Tissot could have stolen it.

On players interaction with the referee

Yeah, all that you want is consistency and there were some moments where I think our guys thought they were getting fouled and we didn’t get calls. It’s never the major ones, they usually get those right. It the little one, where a guy gets a piece of a guy after a play. It could be a yellow and set the tone earlier. There were a few of those I thought. Earlier with Oyongo against Ayuk for instance. I let it go if which is fine if that’s the way it’s going to be the whole game but then the cards started coming out and you’re playing a game that no teams really like playing down a man and to finish the way that we did its not really the best with both teams being shorthanded. It a tough league to ref, that’s for sure. Our guys are competitors so they’re going to get on the ref and try to get any little advantage they can. Montreal did the same thing. At the end of the day the 2-2, we both walk out of here with a point and having a PMR, we’re disappointed it wasn’t three.

On conditions during the game

No, I still think that there’s a lot of moments to learn from and there were some good plays. There was some good build up from our attacking and decent defensive performances from guys. Were the conditions crazy? Yeah, absolutely and the field might not look like it from up high but the wind was incredibly strong in the first half, it kind of faded in the second half. It was in our face in the first half. We didn’t get a chance to go with it because the weather changed a bit. Certainly a strange game in terms of weather, red cards, yellow cards, goals, down a man, us coming back and thinking we were going to be able to put the nail in the coffin and then having a guy sent off so wild one. There are still good learning points so we will definitely still look at the tape but yes, it was a strange one to say the least.

On having to chance thing on the fly because of conditions

Yeah, you prepare for things to be one way for instance, we started Zach and Auyk wide because we thought it would be a game were they would sit in and we’d have a lot of possessions. We scored the early goal so that gets thrown out the window as well. The conditions are a little crazy and it became more of a roll your sleeves up and organize fighting. There were moments of good soccer by both teams for sure but, he field isn’t in the best condition as it is and then the weather on top of it. You saw a lot of balls out of bounds. It became more of a fight. Both teams competed like crazy. Do we wish we had the ability to get on a couple of those balls in the box where Zach had a good look, it just kind of skips across. I don’t know who is wrong footed or what. Maurice had a few where they kind of just glanced by him. C.J. was in there. Sheanon put a few good balls in that we just didn’t get on the end of. It was a challenging night. Regarding Chris and Montreal too they made some good clearances and good blocks in box at the last few seconds. We gave up three shots on goal tonight. It’s a reoccurring theme where for whatever reason the chances we give up are critical chances and we need to do a better job of making teams really earn their goals. It was disappointing in that regard but again the guys did show a fight to get out a tie.

On how it is to play a team so close in standing

It’s unique. The foreign people that will make comments on their league that I’m in tough with will say that they’re confused by the fact that some teams play 3,4,5 more games in some chances than other teams. Obviously, it all evens out by the end of the year but the table is strange and it doesn’t tell the true story. You don’t even need to look at it until the end of the year, that’s the only time it matters. Do you wish you everybody could be within a game or two of each other? Yeah that would be ideal but this country, scheduling is a little different than others.  Some teams share fields and there’s different things that go on that kind of affect and make the difficulty of scheduling. Montreal is a unique one because they made that run in the champion’s league. I looked ahead at their schedule because they could have not been able to do the game so we started to look ahead and its crazy. I was hoping to maybe put it in on them at the end but that’s the past and we move on and take the point.  The scheduling is unique to our league for sure.

On Maurice Edu’s game (risks not paying off)

First and foremost Maurice has been our best player this year I would say but yeah there has been times. The LA game, I did talk to him about that one and he was eager to make a play there. He’s got family there and it’s his home town so maybe he pushed it a little to far in LA, he did a good job coming forward. In this game he made mistake on the first goal. I think he could do better moving his feet. Piatti makes a great play but that’s a play I’ve seen Maurice make getting a block there. He’s had a little bit of a dip but I know he’s a great player and he’ll bounce back.  He made a mistake on the second goal. Everybody makes mistakes, sometimes you need your teammates to bail you out, but we’ll look at the tapes and get some things corrected.

On Maurice Edu’s performance

Yeah the games funny that way. Similar to you know we missed the PK the game before but he pushed and stayed with things in the Seattle game it kind of was a wake up call for him and then for him to balance out with the goal at then end. I think it was a great shot, from a distance too. Critical to keep power on a wet day, did a good job of following it up. I was terrified they were going to call off sides for it or something goes wrong. It was a good play for him to rebound that way and get us a point.

He’s been excellent, his ability to be in the game to the 90th minute. C.J. did a great job of battling all day. He bounces off and always comes back with the ball. I think he came up a little short today but you have to give him credit of putting the offensive load on his back for the last few games till the 90th minute.

Midfielder Maurice Edu

On his goal

We needed a goal. We were all trying to get on the end of the set piece. It came out to Fabi, who did well to take a good shot and keep it on frame. I was just trying to follow up and pray that the goalie would make a mistake, which he did. He made the save and then it came out and I was there in the right place at the right time. It’s a credit to Fabi keeping that play alive.

On his attacking mentality when he’s up the field

I don’t know, you’ve got to just play off instinct. I was just trying to anticipate what I think’s going to happen. With the one where C.J. flicked it on, another day I’m able to get a touch on that, but I think the surface affected how it skipped up a little bit. You’ve just got to try to anticipate the play, put yourself in a dangerous position, do whatever you can to help your team whether it’s get on the score sheet or put the ball in a dangerous area for someone else.

On defending in the poor conditions

It’s difficult because you have to be composed, be smart, and you’ve got to try to stay on your feet and not dive in or bite, but at the same time it’s a little bit more difficult on this surface. And I think it played both ways, it played an advantage for us at times, it played an advantage for them too. Something you can’t really dwell on because both teams play on the same conditions and the same surface so you’ve got to just learn and grow from today. I think we probably could have taken three points so it’s a little bit disappointing but in saying that we’ve had a pretty long stretch of games where it’s game after game after game. So to get a point here is alright. We keep our heads up. Now we’ve got an Open Cup game and a little bit of a break so we can get refocused again for the league.

On Eric Ayuk’s up and down performance

Yeah it’s a learning experience, you know? You have to learn from these mistakes. You grow from them. They create you and they shape character. Obviously he took his goal very well and we were all pleased and happy for him because he’s a guy that works hard in training, and he deserves every bit of success that he does get. But now he has a silly mistake there towards the end of the game where we can push on with a man advantage and try to get that go ahead goal. You help the team and hurt the team a little bit so it’s one of those games. We’ve all been in that situation before. He’s a young kid so he’ll learn from that.

Defender Richie Marquez

On playing in such extreme conditions

In the back we had to play it safe and be more careful. Obviously it rained the entire game but you’ve got to come with the same mentality and stay just as focused if not a little more focused than usual.

Midfielder Eric Ayuk

On playing in the extreme conditions

It was tough, tough to play in the rain. The field was bad. I felt better because I had a good goal and the coach told us to keep going and keep working on.

On his goal

Yeah, before we came out he told me that I should always stay [for flick-ons and lay-offs] near the post. Sometimes I’m out too far from him and sometimes I’m too close, so let me just stay near the top [of the box]. I was watching the goalkeeper and took my chance.

On what Jim Curtin had to say about his performance

He let me keep going. I was not too troubled because the team was level. I was so disappointed because of the red card and I left my team who worked hard and earned that point.

On his the referee’s take on his second yellow card

He didn’t really talk to me, he just said that it was a red and that I had to get off of the pitch.

Montreal Impact Post-Game Quotes

Frank Klopas, Head Coach:

On the result

The positive for me, those two games on the road, and obviously not losing two games in a row is one thing we’ve talked about is never losing two games in a row. You know, we got one point but I definitely felt that we dropped points because we played well enough to win.

On the team’s performance

Well it was good. A little bit of a slow start to the game and then we got into it, especially after the second goal. We dominated possession, we created some good chances, and then it was unfortunate because we know Patrice Bernier on a yellow card and we were ready to take him off and then the play occurs so you can beat your head on it all you want but he’s the captain and he gets…whatever. Its over. And then we find a way to score the second goal and then you know, you’re going to be under a little bit of pressure because they’re pushing the game. And then, you know, they tied the game back but we had a great opportunity with Ignacio Piatti to get the third goal and we didn’t. But I felt in stretches of the game and throughout the game we played, like I said, we take the point but we played well enough to take three today.

On the Union’s second goal

What happened was that we cleared the ball out and then normally we have a guy on the post with Ambroise Oyongo and as the ball cleared, it was a hard shot, a very hard shot for the goalie to see because of the amount of traffic and you say now can he push the ball out to the side where it’s not back in the middle and stuff like that. But then it’s something as the ball comes out, you have to move out with it and we stayed a little bit deep and kept him onside. You have guys in the box but it’s a quick reaction. The shot goes, you turn, and it’s a quick bounce back. They equalized that but like I said, I still thought we had that great opportunity, you know, and if you see it again I don’t know how Ignacio misses that one. A great run by Andres Romero and then we make the change late with the last five because Romero is on a yellow card too and we didn’t want to go down another guy.

On the condition of the pitch and if it effected the goal

Yeah, sometimes. Look, you overrun the play, he got stuck with his feet, it’s hard to say. He scored a great goal and it was good for him to have a good performance, especially after the loss at Toronto and to comeback showed the mentality was good with the guys. Like I said, we’ll take the point because we don’t want to lose two games in a row. Now we have to get ready for the home match and get three there.

On the weight off the shoulders of McInerney and Piatti after scoring their first road goals

Yeah, to get those guys to score again. Obviously Jack had played both games and the way the game went in Toronto, we wanted to get him off a little bit earlier. You saw two guys that with Dominic Oduro come back in the lineup and with Dilly Duka, guys that have been out for a little bit, you can see that there were good moments but you can still see that they have missed matches. We had to make some changes after the third game in seven days but I thought the team played well and the guys that came in did a very good job.

On what he saw from Victor Cabrera

It was good, it was aggressive. I think that’s his natural position. We put him out wide in the beginning but he’s got a lot of bite, he’s aggressive in closing the spaces down with players. I think he needs games, obviously he missed a lot of time with his injury and you could tell, again in the game with NYCFC, his fitness is not there but I think he’s a guy that when you play against him as a forward, you need to be aware  because he’s always in the back of your mind. He plays on your mind as a forward because he’s good in the air and he can tackle.

On what is his state of mind after a week like this

It would have been great to get three points out of the two games, or even four. But, like I said, the way that the first game went in Toronto, it was important to regroup and the games come quick, you know, and with the third game in seven days, we knew we had to make changes. Look, you’re never happy with it. It would’ve been great if I got six points out of the two games but we know it’s a process. We know how difficult it is in this league to pick up points on the road, we talked about it, and now we have to regroup again and have a good week of training at home and be ready for NYCFC at home.

Jack McInerney, Forward:

On scoring against his old team

It feels good. I just wanted to go out there and work hard for the team and got an opportunity and made the most of it. We got the point so I’m happy.

On if the team feels they left points on the table

Yeah there was a span there where we gave five or six corners in a row and  we get one good clearance and we can start controlling the game on the ball and we can finish out that game, especially since it ended up being 10-v-10. We’ll come on the road and take a point any day but those type of games happen when youre going to give up points on the road at the end.

On his and Piatti’s first goals on the road

Yeah, it does I mean they depend on us to score goals and I think we’ve scored a good amount of goals this year and going on the road, obviously you want to lock down defense and keep a shutout. Again, we gave up too many goals on the road and I think at the end of the day that’s what cost us some points so, we’re happy and we’ll take the point but we need to bury one.

On the team showing grit after going to 10 men and if it shows an evolution

Yeah, it does. It not secret that we struggled on the road and for us to get a red card and play a man down, I think we scored a goal when we were man down, it just shows how far we’ve come. We for sure would’ve lost this game last year and I think that we’ve gotten some good results on the road this year and I think going forward, if we want to make the playoffs, we have to do that.

On the field conditions

It was pretty tough, I mean the field wasn’t in good condition to begin with so I think if we would’ve lost, it’s hard to make excuses because both teams played under the same conditions but obviously it’s not ideal. It’s something you have to deal with. It’s something that you just have to adjust to and go out there and put in the work.

On if it was a bittersweet ending for the road trip

Yeah, it was. Coming into this, we wanted six out of the nine points this week so we’re a little disappointed. At the end of the day, after the result in Toronto, we wanted to come here and at least get a point out of it. I think two losses on the road would’ve been disappointing so like I said, we’ll take it. We have two home games in a row now that we can get six points out of.

On how he felt when he scored

Yeah it’s just standard Philly fans, they’re always going to boo no matter what. Just use it as motivation and go out there and put in hard work. If you’re on their team, put in hard work, they’d appreciate it so that’s what I tried to do for our team today.

Patrice Bernier, Defender

On if the team is disappointed only to get one point out of the game

Of course. We played well. I think the first ten minutes we were a bit asleep, when they scored we woke up and played our way. We didn’t panic and we got back a goal, we were 1-1. Second half, which has been a bit of an Achilles heel this year, we came out and stayed composed and organized and even when I came out, I was afraid we would collapse but McInerney scored a great goal and got us the lead. They came back at 2-2 and we had a shot at the end to make it 3-2. Yeah, you could say okay, maybe we’re disappointed to not come out with three points but overall for an away game, usually we’re not so good playing away, and being very composed and feeling that we could’ve came out with more, I think this game has to be the recipe for us to maintain so we can get more points on the road.

On what they can take form this game

Yeah, look. A lot of character because usually, if you go back to every game we’ve played when we go down a goal, we usually lose the game. We came back, we fought, we took the lead even at 10 men. A lot of character. I think we take some confidence and a lot of positives from this game. And also the way we played even when we went down 1-0, we didn’t panic. We kept moving the ball and finding the players like Piatti, Romero, Duka, Oduro, those guys can make the difference and they did. If we stay on the same path on away games, I think we’re gonna get a lot more points.

On his second yellow

I thought the referee was already hounding me pretty much the whole game. Look, in my experience, it was a bad yellow card. Yeah you can say I don’t feel like I touched him but he played it right. The referee deemed it was yellow card worthy and that’s that. Got down, my team is down a bit, but luckily they got, they battled through and got us a point. But I’m not going to comment, I know the referee quite well and I know how he was dealing with the game. Its unfortunate to have taken a yellow again and be suspended for next game but like I said, I’ll take out the good thing as the guys responded well and we came out with a point.

Myers, who ruptured his Achilles tendon on May 23, 2014, made his first MLS appearance on Saturday since suffering the injury and nearly opened the scoring just five minutes into the match. Feilhaber’s corner kick connected with Myers at the top of the six-yard box but the right-footed volley carried over the crossbar.

It was Myers who played the pivotal pass to set up Nemeth for the game’s opening goal in the 32nd minute with a early cross from the right flank. The Hungarian international struck a first-time shot with pace from the top of the penalty area to beat Clint Irwin and in doing so, entered the MLS record books as only the second player in league history to score goals on each of his first seven shots on target.

Feilhaber also collected an assist with the penultimate pass in the scoring sequence and now has a goal or an assist in each of the club’s past four MLS matches. The MLS All-Star nominee was again instrumental in the 64th minute when Sporting Kansas City doubled their lead through a Sam Cronin own goal.

Colorado defender Jared Watts conceded a corner under pressure from Roger Espinoza and Feilhaber took care of the rest, playing the set piece short before whipping a dangerous delivery into the box that ended up in the back of the net when it deflected off Cronin at the near post. The rare own goal – the first in Sporting KC’s favor since April 2014 – would send the Rapids to their second 2-0 road loss in a span of four days and a fourth straight scoreless performance away from home.

Melia made two saves on the night with the first needed in the 14th minute. After venturing to the edge of the 18-yard box to punch away a Cronin free kick, Melia raced back to his line to turn away Marcelo Sarvas’ chip attempt in athletic fashion. The second came in the 42nd minute, diving low to his right to hold onto Luis Solignac’s shot from close range.

Sporting Kansas City moves into fourth place in the Western Conference, one point ahead of FC Dallas. The two teams will meet at 7:30 p.m. CT on Wednesday at Sporting Park in the 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Round of 16. QUOTES

Sporting KC Manager Peter Vermes

On what makes Krisztian Nemeth a dangerous forward…

It’s when great balls are put in there, like Chance gave him tonight. That’s why we’re able to score those goals. He has good finishing qualities. He’s very good around the box, but you don’t score that if you don’t get that kind of ball that Chance put in there. Because, what can happen a lot of the time is that you just get outside and you send the ball into the box and you say you did your job. But (Chance) picked him out of a lot of people. That’s probably about a 50-yard ball that he plays in and along the ground. It was a tremendous finish. He’s just a good finisher, very good in and around the box.

On Sporting KC winning five straight league games at home…

There’s intelligence about the group. I think our style of play is a little more evolved and I think that’s what has been able to get us the kind of results we’re getting right now. Especially when teams try to sit back, we have a lot of dangerous guys, a lot of ways to break them down. We’re finding ways, whether it’s through the run of play or also set pieces to score goals. You have to be dangerous in all the parts of the game, especially when you’re going to goal. You can’t just be one of those who only scores from set pieces or from long distance shooting. You have to find guys in the box, you have to be able to dribble people, make chances and you also have to be good on set pieces. When you look at the combination of those things and the evolution of our style of play and the intelligence of the players that we have, it starts to yield the kind of results that we’re looking for, especially here at home.

On the fan support at Sporting Park…

The fans here are tremendous. I’ve always said this, I don’t mean this disrespectfully to anyone else in the league, but there are three venues: there’s Seattle, Portland and us. The environments are incredible. It’s one of the things that happens with our fans-the fact that they show up game in and game out, the fact that we played when it was (fourth) round of U.S. Open Cup, and we get a sold-out crowd. Even U.S. Soccer is blown away at the fact that we got that kind of crowd, largest crowd in that round of the history of U.S. Open Cup. It says a lot about the commitment of our fans. At the same time, it’s a great aid over the course of 90 minutes to help our guys play with the amount of intensity and enthusiasm they’re capable of playing with. It puts a lot of pressure on other teams. What I don’t think a lot of other people take into account, when other teams come here to play, they’re excited about playing here. What happens is, over time, the intensity and pace of the game, it’s very hard for them to stay up with it because the fans aren’t there for them. They just feel the energy at the beginning, and then what takes over is our team, and the crowd just gets louder and louder as the game goes on. Next thing you know we just overpower them.

On the chemistry of the team after bringing in so many new faces…

It all comes down to coaching (smirks). No, I think what it is-we have such a solid nucleus of players that are here, a core group of guys that have a very good understanding of the way that we play, the expectations we have for every individual player, and then the profile of the player that we bring in winds up being a guy that can acclimate really quickly. If you look at Soni Musivar and you look at the way that he has adapted and the work ethic that he puts in on the field. I think everyone is pretty amazed, especially within the team, forget about anyone outside. The guy has bought in to everything, he’s a relentless worker, and he’s kind of the unsung hero for what he does. He’s a new guy here. He didn’t even have the whole preseason with us. Krisztian, very similar, fits into the team, gets along well, but it has so much to do with the nucleus of players who we currently have here. As much as I may set out what the expectations are, it’s those guys that continue to raise the standard and who police that with the rest of the players in the team. I can’t be a policeman seven days a week, 365 days a year. It’s up to them to do it and they’re doing a very good job of that. I think that acclimation has happened so quickly because we have such a strong core group of guys.

On Tim Melia’s save sequence in the first half…

He comes out and makes a good punch on the ball, and we don’t get pressure to that ball. Tim has incredible athleticism to get back and make that next save. Then he makes another save not too much after that on a ball that was shot to his right. That was a tremendous save; it was big time. That definitely kept us at a good point going into the rest of the half.

On short turnaround before Open Cup on Wednesday…

It wasn’t like I was going to play (Myers) two games in a row, the fact that he could go as long as he did. He probably could have went the full game at the end, but I took him off because I think it was great to get him an ovation because as most of you know, or don’t know, he’s worked his ass off over this past year to try to get back. He suffered a serious injury. For him to be back and be playing at the level he’s playing at this point, it’s tremendous. I’m very happy to see the way that he’s playing for him and for more importantly for the club. He’s a big part of the success we’ve had and will continue to have in the future.

Sporting KC defender Chance Myers

On marking his first MLS match since May 2014 with an assist…

It’s really exciting. Obviously I’ve worked really hard this past year, so to see it all play out in a good light, it’s pretty exciting.

On playing in an MLS match as opposed to an Open Cup match…

It’s definitely a different level. Coming into this game I was a little bit more…obviously nervous, but excited to get the competition going and just challenge myself. Coming off 50 minutes in an Open Cup game and 90 minutes in an MLS game, it’s a little different, but I’m always up for a challenge.

On the fan support at Sporting Park…

The fans, game in and game out, they make it a lot easier on us. Obviously there are periods in games where we’re not possessing the ball, we’re down, or we’re defending. They make it a lot easier. When we make a good play, they give us confidence in ourselves and help us drive the game. They give us that extra bit of energy that we don’t have late in the game.

On playing the full 90 minutes…

Our team makes it a lot easier on me. We have guys around me doing a lot more than is expected of them. We’ve got guys like Ellis, we’ve got Besler, we’ve got Zusi around me. It just makes the game so much easier for me. We have a really intelligent squad. I just have to go out there and take care of my business and help the guys around me. Everybody is looking out for everybody. That’s kind of our mindset. If we’re looking out for one another it makes everyone else’s job a whole lot easier. It kind of worked out in the second half, being on the right side. I was in constant communication with Peter, but I felt pretty good. I didn’t cramp up or anything. I think two or three times I got winded but I got my wind back and pushed through it.

Sporting KC goalkeeper Tim Melia

On his acrobatic save in the first half…

I just came out and tried to make sure I got distance on the punch. I don’t know how far I punched it, but I saw Marcelo (Sarvas) line up and I knew the second he was on the ball he was a player capable of hitting that dipping shot, so I just tried to get back as quick as I could. Then I got stuck in the goal and I was lucky to get my foot out of it before the guy got there.

On locking down the defense for an eighth shutout…

What we didn’t do in Salt Lake – we didn’t come out and grab the game by the back of its neck – I think we did tonight. We didn’t give them many opportunities at all. We controlled the tempo, we controlled the midfield. When we had to make defensive plays, I thought Matt (Besler) and Kevin (Ellis) did an excellent job tonight. Chance (Myers), coming in, played really well; Marcel (de Jong) as well. I thought everyone across the backline was excellent.

On getting an early goal…

I think it just gets the crowd into the game a little bit more, and then that gives us that little extra momentum to let us hold onto it to win the game.

On the sprinklers turning on mid-game heading into a free-kick…

I think it actually helped us, because it looked like it messed with the kicker a little bit. That guy (Dillon Serna) usually serves a good ball in and that wasn’t one of his better balls throughout the game. I think it got in his head a little bit.

Colorado Rapids Manager Pablo Mastroeni

On how Colorado approached Sporting KC…

Obviously the idea was to get in behind the backline quite a bit. We didn’t do a good job in the first half getting guys into the box. A lot of that has to do with Luis (Solignac)’s pace and his commitment to go forward. I think we created some good chances and had some good looks at goal. This team is a good overall team and a good defensive team. It’s hard to get good looks against them and I thought tonight was a very good game for us. I think we did enough to get a result and I think some of our looks were very good.

On Colorado’s scoring chances…

I think we had a few good chances. I think there was a deflection that barely missed the bar in the first half. I think we had two good looks in the second half where we were probably 15 to 18 yards out and both of those fell to the left of the goal. I think those were really good chances and they were a lot like the goal KC scored. They were in the same area but they finished their opportunity.

On Krisztian Nemeth’s strengths…

He is definitely clean. He is definitely proficient and his technique is very good. We knew that he likes to end up on the top of the box when the ball is on the side. If you give that guy an inch of room, then he scores and that was for me was the defining moment of the game. He’s one of those guys who doesn’t have to be involved for 90 plus minutes. He picks and chooses his moment, and when he strikes he’s very good.

On comparing Nemeth to another MLS player…

To be fair he reminds of Landon (Donovan). The ability to really find the corner with pace and trajectory from the service he uses. He’s really dynamic and clinical.

On the difficulty of recovering after falling behind…

Any time you’re playing from behind, you’re going to find yourself in a heap. For us, the plan was to come out on the front foot and be aggressive and I think we did that. We wanted to create a couple of chances. I think scoring and being efficient in front of goals is a confidence issue. Everyone can do it with time. It’s when you work that split second, that inch of space to release your shot. When you have confidence in your strikes is when you score goals and at the moment we are having a hard time finding the back of the net. It wasn’t for lack of effort or getting in the right spots. It was just that last bit and I think that comes with the confidence. We are doing everything we can to get in the right spots it’s that final shot or final pass that is loose at the moment. Again, the effort was tremendous and the guys executed everything that we have talked about all week. Against a team like this in this type of environment it is difficult to play. Again, I’m proud of the effort and execution, except for the finishing.

On the difficulty of playing at Sporting Park…

It’s no different than going to LA and playing there. It’s the psychology of the game prior to the start. It’s the history and the legacy of the last couple years. It’s the fans, the environment, the way KC attacks the game, and the fearless approach. It’s all that culminating in it being a difficult place to play. Having said all that, I felt today the guys didn’t back down for a second and actually fought the fight, and competed really well. It’s mentality and a mindset that makes it tough.

On Colorado’s defensive performance…

There were just key moments. I didn’t think KC had the ball in our defensive end and was passing it 180 times per possession, and dominating in that regard. What they were was opportunistic. Over the course of the game, I thought we created just as many, if not better opportunities in dangerous areas to finish. There is always the need for improvement on all aspects but it’s those moments. Nobody knows when those moments are going to be so to be tuned in for 90 plus is critical. Overall, I thought the guys did a good job of keeping Dwyer and Zusi relatively quiet, and other than his goal they kept Nemeth relatively quiet.

Colorado Rapids defender Jared Watts

On Colorado’s 2-0 loss to Sporting KC…

We came into a tough environment and it’s obviously a dynamic attacking group that they have. We had a game plan going in and we knew that we needed to weather the storm the first 15-20 minutes and match their intensity. We knew they were going to come out and press, so we wanted to try and turn them and gain some space. Unfortunately they were able to find two goals and that’s just how the night went.

On Krisztian Nemeth’s goal in the first half…

You’ve got to give it to him. They kind of caught us on the break there and he took it well. There are no excuses on our side. Those are details we kind of just have to fine-tune. With a good team like Kansas City, you can’t give them opportunities, especially to a guy like him. They’re playing well and in good form.

On Colorado’s chances created…

We had a couple of chances there to maybe even the game. We didn’t take them as well as we could have-could have got back into the game. We wanted to chase it and get back into it, but once we gave up that second goal we knew it would be tough. With the atmosphere here and the fans-the way they get behind them-is hard. We battled and never gave up, and we still have faith in the guys that are out there. We want to turn this around.

On Colorado’s confidence level…

We still have a lot to play for. Our heads aren’t going to drop here in this locker room. We’ve got a lot of the season left and we’re desperate for a win. We want a result and we know we can get one.

On Colorado competing in the Open Cup on Tuesday…

It’s another opportunity for our team to be out there and play a tough game. On Tuesday night it’s the Open Cup. We want to get a result and get a win and hopefully turn this thing around and look forward to the game on the fourth of July (at home).

On the challenge of traveling to Houston in the Open Cup on Tuesday…

We went down there and played them in what was an organized game-a 0-0 draw. I thought we could have won the game-I thought we let some points slip there. I think going down there we’ll be confident knowing that it’s an Open Cup game. It’s just about the mindset going in. There are positive things we can build off of coming back into the league.

On the challenge of playing three straight road matches…

It’s part of the league, having to adjust with the travel schedule and games going back-to-back on different coasts. All the teams do that here and it’s part of this league. We just try to take care of ourselves and be prepared when the next game comes.

Colorado Rapids forward Luis Solignac

On Colorado’s 2-0 loss to Sporting KC…

It seems like everything is against us right now. We are trying so hard-fighting, shooting, doing everything, and it seems like the ball doesn’t want to go in. It’s one of the worst moments for the team right now. We are really frustrated.

On Colorado’s first half performance…

We had a very good first half. One chance and they score. It’s hard to explain the feeling we are experiencing.

On feeling responsible for scoring goals as a striker…

Of course, every game. The last game I thought it was my fault with the chances I lost.  But if I keep thinking like that all the time, it’s going to be worse and worse. I’ll just focus on training and keep going hard. Like I say many times, when the first goal comes, many will come. I need to keep working hard and it will come.

On continuing to fight hard for goals…

I’m happy that I am having chances. The worst thing would be having no chance at all. Then it’s like you are doing nothing. I’m working hard and getting chances every game, and I think that helps the team. I just have to focus, work hard and breathe. Maybe it’s not just me-it’s everyone. We need to finish our chances and feel like the ball doesn’t want to go in. We have to stop thinking like that and be confident. The first one will come and then many others.

On his current form…

I’m feeling quite good. Even if the goal didn’t come, I feel like my levels are getting better and better. The only thing I am missing is the goal. Otherwise I feel great with the ball and the touches and the movements. Of course, as a striker, I would change all those things for a goal. I’m going to work hard and that will change for sure.

(June 27, 2015) -Sporting Kansas City stretched the club’s undefeated streak at Sporting Park to nine MLS games, matching the longest home unbeaten start to a regular season in team history, with a 2-0 win over the Colorado Rapids on Saturday in front of the 62nd consecutive sold out crowd.

Krisztian Nemeth scored his team-leading seventh goal of the season as Chance Myers marked his MLS return with a game-winning assist and Benny Feilhaber extended his single-season career high with his ninth assist of the year.Defensively, Sporting KC earned their eighth clean sheet in 16 matches – most among all MLS teams – and Tim Melia lowered his MLS-leading goals against average to 0.63. With Saturday’s win,  the 250th regular season victory in club history, Sporting KC stretched the team’s unbeaten streak against Colorado to 11 MLS matches (6-0-5) under Peter Vermes dating back to 2009 and 15 straight in the series at home (11-0-4) since 2002.

Please note: When discussing our team, please refer to the club on first reference as Sporting Kansas City or Sporting KC. A charter member of Major League Soccer since 1996, Sporting KC has twice won MLS Cup (2000, 2013) and the U.S. Open Cup (2004, 2012) to go along with a Supporters’ Shield (2000) title.
