Goldey-Beacom Volleyball Battles Hard in 3-0 Loss to Philadelphia U.

Goldey-Beacom dropped a tough first set to Philadelphia U. and could not recover in a 3-0 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference loss (24-26, 13-25, 14-25) at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

The first set was a tightly contested one in which the Lightning looked to have in hand up 23-20.  But the Rams ended it on a 6-1 run with four kills to finish the set, including two from Courtney Wensel.  Philadelphia U. had 17 kills and a .371 hitting percentage in the set with Wensel getting five kills.

The Lightning were not too shabby themselves in the first set and that included junior Grace McCarthy (Middletown, DE/DE Military Academy) getting nine kills and just one error over 16 attacks.  The home side ended the set with 15 kills and a .306 percentage.

But the Rams controlled things the rest of the way, combining for 26 kills and just six errors for a .345 percentage.  Lauren Laucella totaled seven kills in that span with six in the second set to go with an. 857 percentage.

McCarthy had 12 kills, leaving her one shy of becoming the eighth player in school history to reach 500 career.  Freshman Olivia Florence (Glen Allen, VA) dished 19 assists, freshman Keelin McEleney (Conshohocken, PA/Plymouth-Whitemarsh) posted nine digs and senior Mackenzie Wilson (Wilmington, DE/Concord) added eight for GBC (4-8, 0-5 CACC).

Wensel and Laucella had 10 kills apiece, Nina Morvin posted 17 assists, Alexandra Harrington notched 13 and Michele Chai had 15 digs for the Rams (7-4, 3-1), who recorded their fifth straight win.

Goldey-Beacom Men’s Soccer Post 3-0 Blanking at East Stroudsburg

Goldey-Beacom buried a trio of second-half goals and posted its third victory in the last five outings, 3-0 at East Stroudsburg in East Stroudsburg, PA.

The contest was nip and tuck most of the way before Goldey-Beacom finally opened the scoring in the 67th minute.  Freshman Chahin Aghrim (Bonn, Germany) had the perfect opportunity and found the back of the net for his second goal of the season.

The Warriors only had one shot between that and the Lightning’s second tally that came in the 82nd minute.  Sophomore Manuel Berto (Valencia, Spain) launched a perfect free kick that junior Rerom Delys (Vila Velha, Brazil) headed in for his team-leading fourth goal of the campaign and a 2-0 visitors’ lead.

The hit parade was not done as Aghrim made it a three-point night, assisting in the 86th minute on the second goal of the year from sophomore Omar Hernandez (West Grove, PA/Avon Grove) for a 3-0 margin.

Three players had two shots apiece for GBC (3-5) and freshman Suhail Bismilla (Johannesburg, South Africa) totaled six saves.

Casey Choffy had five shots and Will Boerema made six saves for the Warriors (5-4).

Goldey-Beacom hits the road again Thursday to visit Millersville for a 6:00 pm start.

DATE: September 29, 2015
djl
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – – A diverse offense led the Wilmington University volleyball team to a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference sweep at Holy Family, 3-0, on Tuesday night at the Campus Center.
Set scores for the match were 29-27, 25-21, and 25-17.
The Wildcats (10-5, 4-1 CACC) did not have a student-athlete reach double digit kills, but had Kaitlin DiGiacinto and Allison Briley finish with nine kills each while Alex Siolos added eight kills. The team hit .158 for the match, putting down 34 kills with only 13 errors on 133 attempts.
The Wildcats saved the best for last, hitting .289 in the third set, putting down 13 kills with only two errors on 38 swings.
Wilmington needed to bounce back early in the first set as the Tigers (2-13, 1-4 CACC) led 15-9 before the Wildcats made their comeback. The Wildcats took the next two points before scoring four straight to close to within 16-15, forcing the Tigers into a timeout. Another four straight points put the Wildcats on top 19-18 but the Tigers responded to retake a 21-19 advantage.
Facing set point, 24-23, the Wildcats picked up a block from Eile Harris and DiGiacinto to keep the set alive. Again down to set point, 25-24, Briley came up with back-to-back kills to put the Wildcats in front, 26-25. Now tied, 27-27, the Wildcats moved ahead with a Tigers’ error before Siolos ended the set, 29-27, with a kill.
Holy Family jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the second set before the Wildcats battled back, scoring eight of the next 10 points to take a 10-7 lead. Again trailing 17-14, the Wildcats came out of a timeout and scored four consecutive points to take an 18-17 lead. Tied 19-19, the Wildcats got kills from Briley, DiGiacinto, and Megan Ward in a string of four straight to take a 23-19 lead. A Tiger service error gave the Wildcats set point before DiGiacinto put the set away, 25-21, with a kill.
Wilmington took control of the third set quickly, taking leads of 16-11 and 20-12. A block by Ward and Siolos put the Wildcats up 22-15 before a dump back-to-back point by Miranda Shaw and DiGiacinto gave the visitors set and match point. Siolos finished off the Tigers with her final kill of the match, 25-17.
Shelby Henderson led the defense with a match high 23 digs while Siolos added 16. DiGiacinto contributed 15 digs while Shaw and Briley chipped in with 11 digs each. Shaw passed out 26 assists while Eile Harris led with three block assists. Ward and Siolos collected one solo block and two block assists each as well.
Following a three-match road trip, the Wildcats return home on Thursday, looking to extend their winning streak to three straight matches. The Wildcats return to the WU Athletics Complex to face Georgian Court in a CACC South Division matchup starting at 7:00 p.m.

SUBJECT: Loran Wyrough’s Penalty Kick in 79th Minute Lifts Wilmington Women’s Soccer, 1-0, Past Chestnut Hill
DATE: September 29, 2015
djl
LAFAYETTE HILL, Pa. – – A penalty kick with just over 11 minutes left in regulation sent the Wilmington University women’s soccer team to a 1-0 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory at Chestnut Hill on Tuesday afternoon on Victory Field #1.
The Wildcats (4-3, 4-1 CACC) put 19 shots on the board throughout the contest, 12 of which came in the second half, but couldn’t find the back of the net in the first 78 minutes. A handball in the box proved to be the difference in the contest, as Loran Wyrough buried the opportunity with 11:40 remaining on the game clock.
Freshman Rebecca Dolhansky led the Wildcats attack with six shots, two of which were on goal. Sophomores Chandler Lages and Alexa Smalley added to the attack with three shots each, both with putting two of their shots on goal. The Wildcats outshot the Griffins (3-6, 1-5 CACC), 19-9, for the match.
Sophomore net minder Kierstyn Williams recorded four saves in goal for the Wildcats, with the most important coming with 10 minutes left in the first half. The Griffins had a chance on a cross into the box, but the sliding shot from the home team was saved by Williams to keep the contest scoreless.
The penalty kick goal was the first for the Wildcats on the season and the sixth of the year for Wyrough.
The Griffins’ Kayla Reno recorded 11 stops for the home team. The Wildcats also earned more corners, 5-4, in the match.
The Wildcats will look for their third straight victory when they return to the WU Athletics Complex on Saturday. The Wildcats will take on Caldwell in front of a Homecoming crowd, being the second game of a Wilmington tripleheader starting at 12:30 p.m.

oldey-Beacom’s Aaron Easter Picked CACC Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Week; Pauline Rozet Tabbed to Women’s Tennis Weekly Honor Roll

Another great week for Goldey-Beacom athletics saw senior Aaron Easter (Elkton, MD/Rising Sun) named Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Week and junior Pauline Rozet (Malakoff, France) picked to the Women’s Tennis Honor Roll.

Easter posted his first career victory on Saturday in capturing the GBC Fall Classic.  He led at virtually every marker over the eight-kilometer course and cruised in 28:34.48, winning by 35 seconds.  His triumph helped the Lightning capture the team title by 20 points over league-rival Philadelphia University.

Rozet gutted out a thrilling victory Thursday over Stefanie Canals-Bake of Concordia (NY) at fourth singles.  She fought off several match points in an 18-point match tiebreak which went well beyond that to record a 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (15-13) triumph.

The cross county teams on Friday head to Lehigh for the prestigious Paul Short Invitational.  The women’s tennis squad is on the road Wednesday to visit Chestnut Hill.
