LEXINGTON, Va. – Facing a non-conference opponent on Senior Night, the VMI wrestling team fell in a back and forth battle to visiting Sacred Heart by a 20-18 score Friday night at Cormack Hall.

After senior Dalton Henderson registered easy points for VMI by way of a Pioneer forfeit to open the dual, three consecutive Sacred Heart wins from the 133-149 weight classes proved to be the difference as the Keydets (2-12, 1-5) and Pioneers exchanged wins every other bout afterward to close the match.

The Pioneers (3-11) jumped ahead by a 10-6 tally through four bouts after logging two victories by decision and a major decision win at 141 to put VMI at a deficit.

Sophomore Neal Richards put the Keydets back ahead at 157 pounds by earning a pin in 3:58 over Sacred Heart’s Casey Mitchell to put VMI back up, 12-10, at the midpoint. The fall marked Richards’ fourth pin of the season, tied for third most on the team.

The teams then took turns trading victories, starting with a Pioneer win at 165 as Matt Fisher topped VMI’s Cade Kiely by a 5-1 decision. Wrestling in his final home match as a Keydet, senior Shabaka Johns claimed a 4-1 decision over Dom Celli to reclaim the VMI advantage at 15-13 with only three bouts remaining.

At 184 pounds, Pioneer Elliott Antler majored VMI’s Ben Wagner by a 10-2 score to put the Pioneers back up, 17-15. VMI junior Taylor Thomas stepped up to the challenge and won by a 12-6 decision over Mark Boyle for the Keydets’ final lead of the night, 18-17.

Coming down to the heavyweight division, Sacred Heart’s John Hartnett managed to pull out a 6-0 decision win over Thomas Shea-Roop to seal a 20-18 team victory over VMI in the final home match of the season.

The Keydets close the regular season tomorrow night on the road to face Southern Conference foe Campbell in a 5 p.m. dual in Buies Creek, North Carolina. The SoCon tournament is slated for Saturday, March 4, in Charleston, South Carolina.

MADISON, Wis. – It was an exciting night at the UW Field House, as the No. 18 Wisconsin wrestling team put on a show marking a 26-12 victory over Michigan State on Friday night to put a cap on its Big Ten dual season.

Wisconsin (6-5 overall, 4-5 Big Ten) suffered an early setback as Michigan State’s Drew Barnes pinned Santonio Cathery (157), which gave MSU a 6-0 lead. However, the Badgers immediately turned the tides, winning the next five bouts.

Connor Medbery (HWT) had a standout performance for the Badgers, adding five points to the board with a 15-0 tech fall. The victory was Wisconsin’s lone bonus-point win of the night.

In the second match, Hunter Ritter got the Badgers back on track. He came out strong with two takedowns in the first period and kept control throughout to finish the 5-4 decision.

Ricky Robertson (197) continued the Badgers successful rhythm starting with his first takedown in the first period. He attacked late in the second to take a 4-0 lead into the second period. He was taken down early in the third after escaping, but retaliated with a reversal at the last second to close the 7-2 decision.

The Badgers’ winning ways continued through Medbery’s win to defining decisions at 125 and 133 by Johnny Jimenez and Eli Stickley, respectively.

Andrew Crone ditched his “Comeback Crone” persona and attacked first for a 2-1 edge after the first period at 149. He slipped out of Trimble’s grasp more than halfway through the second and then tacked another takedown. Trimble hit Crone with a reversal late in the third, but the Badger escaped and held off to clinch the 6-3 decision.

Seniors TJ Ruschell and Isaac Jordan both came away with victories at 157 and 165, respectively, -and secured the 26-12 Wisconsin victory. Ruschell defeated Austin Thompson, 8-4, and Jordan dropped Drew Hughes with a tight 3-2 decision.

The Wisconsin wrestling team returns to the UW Field House on Sunday to host Central Michigan. The dual is scheduled to start at 12 p.m. (CT). UW’s esteemed senior class will be honored in a ceremony before the start of the dual.

MATCH POINTS

-UW won eight out of 10 matches on the night, marking the fourth time Wisconsin has won five-or-more matches in a dual and also marking the most bouts won in a dual this season.

-The Badgers recorded their third-straight win headed into the final dual of the season.

-For the second-straight year, UW ended Big Ten dual season with a win. The Badgers trumped Northwestern last season, 38-3.

-Wisconsin improved to 27-17-2 in the all-time series with Michigan State and 14-8-1 in duals in Madison.

-Hunter Ritter claimed his third-straight victory over a Big Ten opponent with his 5-4 decision.

-Isaac Jordan eclipsed the 20-win mark with his 3-2 decision.

-Connor Medbery matched his career high for Big Ten wins in a season with nine.

-Sunday’s dual will serve as senior day honoring one of the most decorated groups of seniors the Badgers have ever had. Santonio Cathery, Jarod Donar, Isaac Jordan, Rylan Lubeck, Connor Medbery, TJ Ruschell and Ryan Taylor will be honored at the match.

MAT TALK

“Overall, I’d say we did pretty good. We won eight out of 10 matches, so that’s always good. We’re always looking to go 10-for-10, so we’re not quite where we want to be at, but it’s something to improve on and we’re looking forward to Sunday. Hopefully we can capitalize on the matches that we didn’t win today and get big wins against a good team in Central Michigan.” – Junior Ricky Robertson

“I told my coach before the match that I’m going to make sure I don’t give up the first takedown. It’s kind of been a little bit of a problem, starting kind of slow, and I can always put some pace up at the end because I’m in pretty good shape. It was definitely good to get out to a good start this match and not really have to come back for a third.” -Andrew Crone

“We beat a Big Ten team. We won eight out of 10 weight classes. I felt like we saw a lot of the things we’ve been working on in practice and there’s things that are recurrent issues that stopped us from maybe building on our leads or finishing matches the right way, things we’ve been talking about for a month now. It’s time to straighten those out. We’re going to talk about it tonight, talk about it tomorrow and come out ready Sunday against Central Michigan.” -Associate head coach Trevor Brandvold

Charleston, S.C. (Feb. 17, 2017) — Delaware State scored six runs in the first three innings, while pitchers Lane DeLeon and Travis Dill combined for nine strikeouts without allowing an earned run in a 9-2 victory Charleston Southern in the 2017 opener for both teams at CSU Ballpark today. The win was the Hornets’ first in a season opener since the 2009 season.

Newcomer Ciaran Devenney was two-for-four with two RBI in his collegiate debut, Austin Bentley had three hits and Todd Henry drove in two runs to highlight DSU’s nine-hit attack.

Darnel Maisonet got the Hornets off to a quick start with a two-out solo homer in the top of the first inning. Maisonet had one home run in 156 at bats as a freshman in 2016.

Delaware State tacked on two runs in the second to open up a 3-0 lead. Jaylen Zielecki drove in the first run of the inning on a two-out double and Tommy Jordan doubled in Zielecki in his first collegiate at bat for the second run of the frame.

Charleston Southern scored two unearned runs off DeLeon in the bottom of the second inning to cut the Hornets’ lead to 3-2.

DSU answered with three runs in the top of the third for a little more breathing room. After a one-out double by Bentley put runners on second and third, Devenney drove in his first career run on a ground out to second. Two batters later, Henry doubled to right center, driving in two to give the Hornets a 6-2 lead.

After DeLeon shut down the Buccaneers in the third and fourth innings, the Hornets added two more runs in the fifth. Maisonet singled to lead off the inning and later scored on a single by Devenney. DSU opened up an 8-2 lead when the second run of the inning crossed the plate on a Charleston Southern error.

Delaware State closed out the scoring with a run in the ninth. Pinch hitter Devin Beverly’s two-out single drove in Masionet, who scored four times in the game.

DeLeon allowed five hits and two unearned runs, while striking out five and walking three in 5.2 innings to earn the win. Dill relieved DeLeon in the bottom of the sixth, getting the final out of the inning with the bases loaded. He also pitched the final three innings, striking out four, to earn the save.

The Hornets will look for two wins in a row to start the season when the teams play a single game on Saturday. Sophomore right-hander Sean McGrath is DSU’s scheduled starter in the contest.

SUBJECT: Wilmington Softball Starts Season with Shutout of Southern New Hampshire, but Falls to Kutztown

DATE: February 17, 2017
djl

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – – The Wilmington University softball team began its 2017 campaign with a split of games on Friday, defeating Southern New Hampshire, 7-0, before falling to Kutztown, 3-1, to kick off the 2017 Snowbird Softball Freeze Out Tournament.

The bats wasted little time to warm up on Friday, collecting 19 hits in the two games, including seven extra base hits. The pitching was also firing on all cylinders, as Caitlyn Whiteside tossed a complete game shutout over the Penmen before Brooke Lachette tossed 4.1 strong innings against Kutztown, getting hurt by defensive errors.

Freshman Whitney DeMora introduced herself in a big way in the top of the first inning in the opener, crushing a solo shot to dead center field in her first collegiate at-bat to put the Wildcats ahead, 1-0. Becca Stanley led off the top of the second with a double before Kaitlyn Slater knocked her senior classmate in with a single for the 2-0 lead in the first two innings.

The big hits continued to come for the Wildcats, as Slater led off the top of the sixth inning with a solo homer to left for the 4-0 lead while a sac fly brought in another run in the inning to put the Wildcats ahead, 5-0. Stanley capped the runs for the Wildcats to a two-run blast of her own in the seventh inning, bringing in Colby Wyatt for the 7-0 lead. Whiteside took care of the rest for the shutout.

Whiteside allowed eight hits, but only one extra base hit, with only one walk. She struck out three batters in the win.

Stanley finished 3-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored while Slater went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Rosa’Lynn Burton and Danielle Bradley added doubles for their lone hits of the opener.

The defense let the Wildcats down in the nightcap, as they committed four errors in the game with all three third inning runs coming unearned.

Burton was the catalyst for the Wildcats’ lone run, as they got off to another fast start with a first inning score. Burton led off the game with an infield single, moving to second on an error. She was soon standing on third with a stolen base. Jazmeen Llamas put the Wildcats on the board with an RBI single, but she was left stranded at third base as the Golden Bears escaped a bases loaded, no out jam with just the one run.

Lachette got out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the first, but couldn’t escape danger in the third. An error and a single put two runners on with two outs, but the Golden Bears came up with a two-run single to move ahead, 2-1. Another error moved the runner to third base and Lachette got the ground ball she was looking. But another fielding error brought in the third run and the Wildcats could never recover.

The Wildcats had a chance in the top of the seventh, as Bradley led off the inning with a hit-by-pitch. Burton put the tying run on base with an infield single, but the Wildcats couldn’t convert in falling, 3-1.

Burton went 3-for-4 from atop the Wildcats’ lineup as Llamas picked up the lone RBI. DeMora had the lone extra base hit for the Wildcats with a double in the first inning.

The Wildcats return to action on Saturday with games against Shippensburg and Lock Haven in continuing the 2017 Snowbird Softball Freeze Out Tournament.

SUBJECT: Late Delaware Rally Comes Up Just Short in Baseball Season Opener vs. Pittsburgh

DATE: February 17, 2017

KISSIMMEE, Fla. — Heading into the ninth inning of its season opener Friday afternoon, the University of Delaware baseball squad faced a four-run deficit on the scoreboard.

Ten minutes later the Hens had the bases loaded with one out and a chance to win the game, but a base running error and a strikeout to end the game finished the threat and the Blue Hens dropped a 5-3 decision to the University of Pittsburgh (1-0) in the first game of the Diamond 9 Tournament at Osceola Heritage Park.

Trailing 5-1 in the top of the ninth inning, Delaware (0-1) got singles from Kyle Baker, Nick Tierno, and Nick Patten with one out and cut the lead to three when Baker scored on a throwing error.

Blue Hen third baseman Diaz Nardo then smoked a line drive off Pittsburgh pitcher Isaac Mattson that deflected in the direction of the Pitt shortstop. In a clean motion, David Yanni picked up the ball barehanded and fired to first. Nardo beat the throw, and the ball bounded away, but Delaware’s lead runner, Doug Trimble, rounded second too far and was thrown out for the second out of the inning.

Mattson then struck out UD shortstop James Meeker to end the game and preserve the win for Atlantic Coast Conference entry Pittsburgh.

“Today was a tough one,” said Delaware head coach Jim Sherman. “We played well for seven of the nine innings. Unfortunately we had a few mental lapses in the fifth inning, where Pitt scored three times. I know our young club will bounce back well tomorrow (in games vs. Ohio State and Kansas State). Today proved this club will be very good and can compete with teams from any of the top conferences in the country.”

The Blue Hens, who outhit Pitt 9-7, got off to a good start as the first three Delaware hitters reached base against Panthers starter Matt Pidich. After Kevin Mohollen was caught stealing following a leadoff walk, Baker poked a double down the left field line and later scored on a double to right field by Tierno for a 1-0 lead.

Delaware starter Brandon Walter held the Panthers scoreless over the first three innings before Pitt came back to take the lead for good, scoring on a wild pitch in the fourth inning and adding three runs in the fifth thanks to RBI singles by Caleb Parry and Yannni.

The two teams then traded zeros until Pitt added an insurance run in the eighth on another wild pitch.

Delaware will next return to the diamond tomorrow for a doubleheader against Ohio State (2:30 p.m.) and Kansas State (6 p.m.). Ohio State defeated Kansas State 6-3 earlier on Friday.

HEN SCRATCHINGS:

  •      Theloss snapped an eight-start unbeaten streak for Walter
  •      Baker produced the 21st multi-hit game of his career in just 53 games
  •      Delaware falls to 0-2 all-time against Pittsburgh.

AGATE:

Delaware…….100 000 002-   3-9-1

Pittsburgh……000 130 01X-   5-7-0

Hart Leads Red Foxes With 26, Parker Finishes With Double-Double

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist men’s basketball team fell to Iona, 95-88, in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference matchup on Feb. 17 in McCann Arena. The loss drops the Red Foxes at 6-22 overall and 3-14 in conference play. Iona moves to 18-10 overall and 11-6 in MAAC play.

Red-shirt senior guard Khallid Hart led Marist with 26 points. Hart shot 9-for-11 from the free-throw line. Sophomore forward Ryan Funk scored an efficient 20 points on 5-for-7 shooting from three-point range and a 5-for-5 performance from the free-throw line. Sophomore guard Brian Parker flirted with a triple-double as he finished with 14 points, 11 rebounds, and seven assists. It was Parker’s team-best fourth double-double of the season.

Senior center Kentrall Brooks had his third double-digit rebound game of the season with 10 in 20 minutes. Making his first start in a Marist uniform, sophomore guard Richie Mitchell scored seven points to go along with career highs of five assists and two steals.

Hart and Funk highlighted the first half for Marist with double-digit scoring totals. Hart tallied nine points in the first five minutes of play and totaled 17 in the first 20 minutes. Funk followed up with 12 points in the first stanza, going 3-for-4 from three-point range.

Iona finished the first half with a 48-46 advantage, but Marist took the lead with 17:02 to play on two free throws by Funk. A three-pointer by sophomore forward Kristinn Palsson gave Marist a 70-63 lead with 10:47 left, and matched the Red Foxes’ largest lead of the night

The Red Foxes remained in front until a basket by Iona’s Schadrac Casimir with 2:42 remaining. After a free throw by Parker tied the score on the next possession, Casimir answered with a three-point play, which gave the Gaels the lead for good with 2:10 left. The Gaels iced the victory by going 6-for-6 from the free-throw line in the final 14 seconds.

Casimir led all scorers with 27 points in 32 minutes off the bench. A total of five Gaels finished in double figures. Jordan Washington contributed 19 points and a game-high 12 rebounds in 24 minutes off the bench.

The Red Foxes will play in their second contest of a three-game homestand when they battle Canisius on Sunday, Feb. 19. DATE: February 17, 2017

BOSTON, Mass. – Junior Makeda Nicholas (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) registered a career-high six blocked shots, but the Hens struggled offensively Friday evening in a 50-41 loss at Northeastern.

Nicholas finished the night with her first double double of the season with 11 points and 11 rebounds while recording all of Delaware’s blocks.  The forward has now swatted 109 career shots, tying Tiara Malcom (2001-05) for sixth all-time.

Senior Erika Brown (Paterson, N.J./John F. Kennedy) added 11 points with five rebounds, two assists and two steals.

As a team, the Hens (14-11, 8-6 CAA) shot 26.8 percent on 15-of-56 shooting from the floor.  The Huskies didn’t fare much better at 32.0 percent (16-of-50), but capitalized from behind the arc.

Claudia Ortiz led Northeastern (9-17, 5-9 CAA) with 14 points, three assists and three steals while Jess Genco posted 10 points with five rebounds.

POST-GAME QUOTES

Head Coach Tina Martin

“We gave it a lot of good effort, but unfortunately we came up on the short end tonight.  The decision-making wasn’t at the level that it’s been the last few games and we really made some questionable shot choices.  You have to hand it to Northeastern, they made big shots when they needed to and their guards really hurt us in transition.”

HEN SCRATCHINGS

  • With her six blocked shots, Makeda Nicholas also passed Christine Cole on the career charts as Cole registered 108 from 1999-03.
  • Nicholas’ six blocks were the most since Nicole Enabosi logged seven at Georgetown in December 2015.
  • The Blue Hens shot just 7.7 percent (1-of-13) in the third quarter.

UPCOMING SCHEDULE

  • Sunday, February 19 – Delaware at Drexel * – 3 p.m. – Daskalakis Athletic Center (Philadelphia, Pa.) – American Sports Network TV
  • Friday, February 24 – Elon at Delaware – 7 p.m. – Bob Carpenter Center (Newark, Del.)

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Sophomore outfielder TJ Hopkins went 3-for-4 with two doubles and a pair of RBI and junior right-hander Clarke Schmidt allowed just one run in 6.2 innings of work as fourth ranked South Carolina opened the 2017 season with a 7-1 win over UNCG. Friday’s contest was played in front of a sellout crowd of 8,242 at Founders Park.

Schmidt limited the Spartans to a solo homer, three hits and a pair of walks as he earned his first win of the season. Schmidt struck out three in the victory. UNCG starter Jack Maynard suffered the loss. He allowed five runs on six hits in 3.1 innings of work.

South Carolina broke ahead 2-0 in the bottom of the first inning. Hopkins led off with a double to right field and scored on Alex Destino’s one-out RBI single through the right side. Destino would make his way home with the second run benefiting from three wild pitches by Maynard.

UNCG cut the lead in half in the fourth on a solo homer by Dillon Stewart, who launched the first pitch he saw from Schmidt over the left field wall.

The Gamecocks answered though in the bottom half of the fourth with a four spot to take a 6-1 lead. With one out and runners on first and second base, Danny Blair knocked a RBI single to right field scoring Jacob Olson. Hopkins’ third hit of the day would score both LT Tolbert and Blair as he delivered a two-run double into the gap in right-center.

Carolina increased the cushion to six runs in the bottom of the 5th as Matt Williams scored on a wild pitch to give the Gamecocks a 7-1 lead.

NOTABLES
– The sellout crowd was the 49th in Founders Park history.
– Blair tied a career-high in hits with three in the contest. Blair also had three Feb. 27, 2016 vs. Penn State. It marked his third career multi-hit game.
– Hopkins now has an eight-game hitting streak going back to last season.
– Senior right-hander Colie Bowers struck out the first four batters he faced and allowed just one hit in 2.1 innings of work.
– Destino finished 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI as well. Jacob Olson also went 2-for-3 with a run scored in his first career game with the Gamecocks.
– Olson, Carlos Cortes and Riley Hogan all made their Carolina debut in the season opener. – A moment of silence was held before the game as the Gamecocks honored longtime fan Bill “Oot Oot” Golding. An “”Oot Oot” flag hung from one of the flag poles near center field in honor of Mr. Golding and “Oot Oot” helmets were given away to fans attending the game.

QUOTABLE FROM SOUTH CAROLINA HEAD COACH Chad Holbrook
“We played a clean game. Clarke was terrific. (Chris) Cullen was outstanding behind him, along with (Madison) Stokes and Jonah Bride. Those guys made some great plays behind them. It was a clean game no errors in the pitching or defense. We got some timely hits in there. TJ was special. Danny had a really nice game. Destino had a couple good hits. Obviously we had to play well. (UNCG) is a really good team. I’m impressed with their guys. They lead the nation in batting averages and slugging percentages for a reason and a lot of those guys are back so we have to be at the top of our game to have a successful weekend. We got off to a good start tonight.”

UP NEXT
South Carolina and UNCG return to action on Saturday in game two of the series with first pitch at 2 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on SEC Network Plus and can be heard on the Gamecock IMG Network including flagship station, 107.5 FM, “The Game.”

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Despite five runs in the second, Appalachian State University baseball was unable to outlast a pesky VMI squad in the 2017 season opener on Friday at Brooks Field.

The Mountaineers (0-1) seemed off to a slow start to begin the first inning of the year as the Keydets’ (1-0) Matt Dunlevy homered to right field to go up 1-0. But the Black and Gold responded strong in the second inning, going plating five runners in a short burst. Senior Brian Bauk was able to bring home junior Tyler Stroup on a ground out to first, before junior Drake Zupcic singled to center field to drive home two runs – senior Avery Jackson and junior Chandler Seagle.

Freshman Calev Grubbs then hit a beauty to the wall, just out of the outstretched glove of the center-fielder to drive home Zupcic. To round out the top of the second inning, senior Matt Vernon rocketed one down the left field line to bring in Grubbs.

The game then moved to a defensive battle as neither pitcher allowed many opportunities.

The momentum switched in the bottom of the sixth after three scoreless half-innings. VMI used a fielding error to reach first and three walks to score one and load the bases before Collin Fleischer singled to center to drive around two. The Keydets’ Matt Pita shot a liner to center field just over the head of an outstretched Will Herman glove to bring home one. After Fleischer was walked home, Pita scored on a sacrifice fly to give VMI the 11 runs needed to secure the win.

Junior Travis Holden got the call to start today on the mound. The right-hander finished with seven strikeouts, six hits and five runs in 5.0 innings pitched. Senior reliever Sean Mason received the loss.

The Mountaineers will continue their four-game Hughes Bros. Challenge tournament in Wilmington, N.C. on Saturday when they play two: George Mason at 10 a.m. and a rematch with VMI at 6 p.m. The final game on Sunday is against host-team UNC Wilmington at 2 p.m.
