Cal Poly Rallies for 25-12 Dual Wrestling Meet Victory Over Grand Canyon
— Cal Poly Wrestling —

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — A fall by Blake Kastl and technical falls by Jacob Leon and Colt Shorts helped Cal Poly wipe out an early 12-6 deficit as the Mustangs earned a 25-12 victory over Grand Canyon in a non-conference dual wrestling meet Saturday night in the Mott Athletics Center.

Kastl evened his record at 7-7 for the season with a first-period pin over Casey Larson while Leon defeated Joe Huber 23-7 and Shorts was a 15-0 winner over Steven Abayon for Cal Poly, 2-7 in duals for the year.

Grand Canyon, which fell to 5-16 entering Sunday’s match at CSU Bakersfield, earned four decisions in the first six bouts for its 12-6 advantage.

Cal Poly won the final four bouts to win the dual meet going away.

Leon scored eight takedowns and six near-fall points to improve to 8-9 on the year while Shorts blanked his Antelope foe with one takedown, 10 near-fall points and riding time, lifting his mark to 13-6.

Shorts has won his last five matches, two via fall.

Kastl picked up his second fall of the year, scoring a takedown 90 seconds into his match with Abayon, then recording the fall 10 seconds later.

Mustang 174-pounder Travis Berridge closed out the dual meet with a 2-1 decision over Kenneth Moore, scoring a technical violation for locked hands in the first period and an escape in the final period. Berridge was wrestling in his first dual meet of the season.

Cal Poly’s early winners were J.T. Goodwin at 197 pounds and David Gonzalez at 125.

Goodwin is 14-9 for the year, snapping a five-match losing streak with a 2-0 decision over Austin Trujillo. Goodwin earned an escape in the second period and rode out his opponent in the final period for a riding-time point.

Gonzalez and Trayton Libolt battled to a 6-6 draw in regulation and both scored escapes in the first overtime. Finally, in the second overtime, Gonzalez tallied a takedown for the 9-7 sudden-victory decision.

Mustang 285-pounder Spencer Empey also was extended into a pair of overtimes, dropping a 3-2 decision to Daniel Chaid. All points scored in the bout were escapes.

Both Jason DelaCruz and Connor Pollock held early leads only to lose their bouts.

DelaCruz was ahead 3-1 after two periods before surrendering an escape and takedown in the final period in a 4-3 loss to Juaquin Olivas at 133 pounds. Pollock built a 7-3 lead early in the second period before Uzo Owuama rallied for an 11-9 decision at 141.

Cal Poly also has one dual meet on its schedule next week, hosting Oregon State on Friday night for the first of three consecutive home duals against Pac-12 Conference opponents. First match begins at 7 p.m. in the Mott Athletics Center.

Coach Brendan Buckley’s Mustangs also host Arizona State on Feb. 13 (Mott Athletics Center, 7:30 p.m.) and Boise State for Homecoming on Feb. 14 (University Union plaza, 1 p.m.).

Lexington, Va. – Air Force wrestling concluded All Academy Championship action, Saturday night, with one title winner, seven top-three place winners and a third place team finish at the Virginia Military Institute on Jan. 30th.  Air Force’s Marcus Malecek won the title in the heavyweight class while Drew Romero, Josh Martinez, Jerry McGinty and Parker Hines earned runner-up finishes in their respective weight classes.  Both, Alex Lopouchanksi and Adam Jackson finished third in their respective weight classes.

The Falcons were led by senior one-seed, Marcus Malecek (HWT), who went 3-0 on the tournament to earn his second All Academy Championship title and third consecutive top-two finish.  Malecek earned a fall and a decision victory leading up to his championship bout with the Citadel’s, Joe Bexley. This bout marked the second time that Malecek and Bexley met in an All Academy Championship title bout. Malecek would prove dominant in the bout, taking the 9-3 decision to secure Air Force’s only individual title of the event.

Sophomore Drew Romero (125) ended action with a runner-up finish in his All Academy Championship debut.  Romero went 2-1 on the event, earning a fall and a major decision leading up to his title bout with VMI’s Dalton Henderson.  Romero led the title match for the first two periods before giving up near fall points in the third period.  Henderson was able to capitalize on the near fall and seal the deal over Romero with a 12-6 decision.

Senior team captain Josh Martinez (133) went 2-1 on the night, earning a fall and a tech fall leading up to the title bout where dropped a 4-7 decision to Navy’s Zack Davis.  Martinez’s performance was enough to secure a runner-up finish, making him a three-time consecutive title winner and one-time runner-up on his All Academy Championship slate.

Junior Jerry McGinty (149) went 2-1 on the night, earning two major decisions leading up to his title bout with the Citadel’s Matt Frisch. This bout marked the second time McGinty and Frisch met in an All Academy Championship title bout. McGinty and Frisch took turns holding the lead before Frisch was able to secure the 3-2 decision at the end of regulation.  McGinty’s runner-up finish marks the second of his career at the All-Academy Championships along with a finish above his seeding.

Junior Parker Hines (197) earned a runner-up finish, going 2-1 on the night earning a major decision and decision win leading up to his title bout with Army West Point’s Bryce Barnes.  Hines was met with resistance with each escape attempt allowing Barnes to hold onto a lead through the match and secure the 6-2 decision. Hine’s was the second Falcon to finish above their seeding on the event.

Freshman Alex Lopouchanksi (165) went 3-1 on the night earning a fall and a major decision leading up to his third-place bout where he took the 7-5 sudden victory decision over Navy’s John Keck.  Senior Adam Jackson also went 3-1 on the night, earning two decision victories leading up to his third-place bout where he took the 4-3 tie breaker decision over VMI’s Mark Darr.

Senior Willie Baker (184) and Junior Dylan Hyder (141) both went 2-2 on the night earning fourth place finishes in their respective classes. Senior Zach Stepan (157) went 1-2 on the event, picking up a major decision before being eliminated in the consolation of four.

Army West Point took the team title with 91 team points while Navy finished second with 88.5 team points and Air Force finished in third with 86 team points.  Navy’s Mathew Miller earned the Most Outstanding Wrestler on the event.

Air Force wrestling continues action on Saturday, Feb. 6, at 1:00 p.m. against Stanford at Discovery Canyon High School in Colorado Springs, Colo.

The 19 wins tie for the most wins in a single season in NC State history, and the Wolfpack (19-0, 4-0 ACC) will go for a new school record tomorrow afternoon at West Virginia.

The Pack won five of the six matchups between two ranked grapplers tonight, and came away with all three of the bonus point wins.

#3 Kevin Jack took care of business at 141 pounds, scoring a 3-0 win over #10 Mikey Racciato. After a scoreless first, Jack rode Racciato the entire second and his reversal to start the third was all he needed to go along with his 3:31 of ride time. Jack has now won 10 straight and recorded his fourth win over a ranked foe, second in top-10.

PRINCETON – The University of Pennsylvania wrestling team dropped a close dual meet to Ivy League rival Princeton, 19-15, as the Quakers were unable to maintain a lead with three bouts to go.

The heavy hitters for the Quakers came through with wins – led by wins in the waning seconds from No. 17 Casey Kent and No. 11 Lorenzo Thomas to give Penn a 15-9 lead with three matches remaining. However, Princeton claimed the final three matches for the win which wasn’t decided until the final whistle of a 3-2 match at 125 pounds.

Caleb Richardson got Penn off to a great start with a first-period pin of Jake Adkins at 133 pounds. Richardson had four takedowns in the first period before securing the fall at 2:30.

After a decision win from Princeton’s Jordan Laster at 141 pounds, 9-5, Penn responded with a decision win of its own from No. 10 C.J. Cobb at 149 pounds.

Cobb defeated the man who beat him at EIWAs last March, Chris Perez, 3-0, to give Penn a 9-3 lead. Perez was called for an illegal hold early in the second period, and then Cobb would escape for a 2-0 lead. In the third, Cobb rode the entire period – building up 1:24 of riding time for the 3-0 win.

The tide may have first turned in Princeton’s favor with wins at 157 and 165 pounds. No. 20 May Bethea scored first at 157, connecting on a double leg to put Adam Krop behind early. Krop, a veteran of the Penn-Princeton battle, escaped and scored a takedown of his own to help send the match to the second period at 3-3. In the middle frame, an escape and takedown for Krop had Bethea down, 6-3, heading to the third period. Bethea chose neutral in the third and quickly scored to close the gap. However, Krop escaped and iced the match with a takedown for a 10-5 decision.

Brooks Martino found himself in a 4-1 hole after one period to Judd Zeigler at 165 pounds. A reversal from Martino in the second helped close the margin a bit to 5-3, but Martino’s attempts at a turn in the third period went for not in a 5-3 loss.

With the dual tied, 9-9, two of Penn’s top guys came through with gutty wins to put Penn ahead, 15-9.

First, it was No. 17 Casey Kent rallying to defeat No. 14 Jonathan Schleifer at 174 pounds. Schleifer was in control early, scoring three takedowns for a 6-3 lead after one period. There was no scoring in the second period, but Kent was tough on top for a full two minutes of riding. In the third, Kent escaped quickly and then scored a takedown to tie the match. However, Schleifer would reverse before Kent could build more riding time. Kent would escape, though, and then score a takedown for a brief lead. Schleifer would escape, however, and tie the match with short time remaining. A final takedown attempt from Kent would connect with 0:22 left and he would secure an 11-9 win to avenge a loss to Schleifer at the Bearcat Open to start the season.

The match at 184 between No. 12 Lorenzo Thomas and No. 19 Abram Ayala was just as wild. Ayala would score first, and an escape from Thomas made it 2-1 after one period. Thomas would tie the match with an escape in the second. Ayala chose neutral in the third, and a wild sequence would lead to the finish. Thomas was called for stalling, and immediately initiated a scramble. At first it appeared that Thomas came out on top for a takedown, but Princeton challenged. It was determined that Ayala had control first, and the match was deemed to be 4-2 for Ayala with 1:05 left instead of 4-2 Thomas with under 0:30 remaining. Thomas was undaunted, though, escaping and scoring a takedown for a 5-4 win.

The Quakers needed a win in the final three matches to lock up the win, but it never came.

No. 11 Brett Harner defeated Joe Heyob – usually competing at 184 for Penn – via major decision, 15-3 to cut Penn’s lead to two. At heavyweight, Ray O’Donnell broke open a 1-0 match with four nearfall to start the third and defeated Patrik Garren, 6-1.

With the dual in the balance, Pat D’Arcy connected on a takedown in the first period, and that was the ultimate difference in a 3-2 decision. Jeremy Schwartz would escape from the takedown, and get out again in the third period, but was unable to power through a scramble in the final 15 seconds that would have eked out the win.

The Quakers are back at The Palestra tomorrow for a dual with Rider at noon.

@UNCBearsWrestle Powers Through Boise State

The Bears picked up another dual win on the season, defeating the Broncos 22-15

BOISE, Idaho – The Northern Colorado Bears defeated the Boise State Broncos on Friday night, 22-15, after winning six of the ten matches.

Keilan Torres got the night started for the Bears, defeating his opponent at 165 pounds by a 7-4 decision. Torres earned a takedown early in the match to pick up the first offensive points of the dual for the Bears, but would give up an escape just before the whistle to start the second period 2-1.  Nine seconds into the second period, Torres reversed West to make it a 4-1 lead, and would tack on another takedown as well as the riding time advantage point at the end of the third to earn the win over Taylor West for the second time this season.

At 197 pounds, Trent Noon made waves, pinning Harley DiLulo in just 1:25 to add six team points to the board for the Bears. Despite taking his first committed shot of the match seven seconds in, Noon wouldn’t take DiLulo down until 30 seconds later, turning him almost immediately to his back for a four-count. In a similar fashion to earlier this season [Noon won via pin at 2:21 at the Cowboy Open], Noon worked DiLulo on his back to earn the official’s mat-slap, ending the match.

Brian Macchione picked up his second dual win in a row this evening, defeating Gaylen Edmo after a late third period takedown. With the only other points of the match coming from escapes nearing the start of the second and third periods, Macchione pulled out a takedown with just under a minute remaining in the match to secure the 3-1 win, putting the Bears up 12-6 going into intermission.

In yet another rematch on the night, Rico Montoya earned a 12-4 major decision win over Josh Newburg. After an extensive scramble in the middle of the mat, Montoya picked up a takedown and two-point nearfall two minutes into the match for an early 4-0 lead. After another takedown in the second period, Montoya escaped in the third and secured himself the win with another takedown and nearfall to make it 11-1. Despite giving up a takedown and escape in the third, Montoya had riding time locked up, finishing the match up by an eight to give the Bears another four team points.

Ben Polkowske made his 2015-16 dual debut, wrestling Jake Velarde in a close match. Polkowske’s first point of the match came seven seconds into the second period – an escape after opting for a down-position start. Velarde also opted for the bottom start going into the third, but Polkowske rode him out the entire period, notching over a minute of riding time for another point to secure his 2-0 win, moving the Bear lead to 19-9 going into the final two matches of the night.

After a pin for Boise State at 149 pounds, it was up to Eleazar De Luca to win the dual for the Bears, and he did just that. Despite being down 2-1 after three minutes of wrestling, De Luca managed a two-point nearfall (after starting the second period on top) before giving up an escape, leaving the match tied 3-3 going into the final period. An escape for De Luca would make it 4-3, a lead he would hold on to the rest of the match, earning the decision win and securing the dual win for UNC, 22-15.

The Bears are back in action this Sunday, Jan. 31 at 3:00 p.m. MT for a matchup against the Oregon State Beavers in Corvallis, Oregon.

Nathan Tomasello’s major decision at 125 pounds set the tone for the night as the Buckeyes raced out to a 13-0 lead and never looked back. Bo Jordan also stayed unbeaten this year, improving to 11-0 with his eighth bonus point victory of the season. In the only two bouts that featured two ranked wrestlers, Myles Martin took down No. 8 Nate Jackson late in the third period to secure a 6-5 victory.

TOMASELLO EXTENDS HIS STREAK
The winner of 31 straight matches entering Friday, Tomasello (14-0) wasted little timing jumping out ahead of No. 19 Jordan Oliver in the first match of the night, taking a 6-3 first period lead and cruising from there. In all, he racked up six takedowns and a four-point near fall in the 17-5 major decision (his seventh of the year).

DIJULIUS, JORDAN MAKE IT 13-0
Riding the momentum of  Tomasello’s early win, Johnni DiJulius (13-3) extended the Ohio State lead to 7-0 when he shutout Alonzo Shepherd, 7-0. DiJulius’ four-point near fall in the first period gave him a quick lead and then a reversal to start the second made it 6-0. At 141 pounds, Micah Jordan was leading Cole Weaver 7-3 midway through the second period when Weaver fell hard to the mat and injury defaulted, making the score 13-0.

IU WINS AT 149, 157
The Hoosiers got the scoreboard with wins at 149 pounds (Luke Blanton over Hunter Stieber, 6-2) and 157 pounds (Jake Danishek over Justin Kresevic, 8-7). Kresevic lead 6-2 in the match before Danishek came storming back and held a 7-6 lead as time was running down. With 30 seconds left, Danishek took down Kresevic to secure the come-from-behind victory.

MARTIN EDGES JACKSON
Myles Martin (22-3) picked up one of the more impressive wins of his young career, edging eighth-ranked Nate Jackson at 174 lbs., 6-5. It was Martin’s second victory this season over Jackson, with the first coming in the finals of the Eastern Michigan Open. With the score tied at 4-4 late in the third, Martin was able to get the winning takedown and then fend off Jackson for the remaining 40 seconds of regulation.

COURTS, JORDAN WIN MAJORS
Bo Jordan’s 14-5 major decision gave Ohio State a 17-6 lead in the team score and was highlighted by five takedowns, three coming in the first period. Courts (13-6) raced out to a big lead in the first period behind two takedowns and a four-point near fall.

TAVANELLO CLOSES THINGS OUT
Nick Tavanello’s 8-2 major decision over Garret Goldman gave Ohio State its final 27-9 margin of victory. A redshirt junior, Tavanello improved to 15-3 this year and got things rolling in the second and third periods with consistent offensive pressure.

DID YOU KNOW
Ohio State has now won 10 of its last 12 duals away from St. John Arena and is 23-9 over the past five seasons in true road matches.

NEXT UP
The Buckeyes continue their journey through the Hoosier State with a dual against No. 24 Purdue (7-4, 2-3) on Sunday inside Holloway Gymnasium. The match can be seen live on BTN Plus.

No. 12 Rutgers Wrestling Trounces Terps, 30-3

Nine bouts go to the Scarlet Knights in dominant B1G victory

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Jan. 29, 2016) – Twelve days off from competition did little to rust up No. 12 Rutgers wrestling. If anything the Scarlet Knights returned to familiar form.

RU (12-3, 3-2) took nine of 10 matches from Maryland (4-10, 1-6) Friday night in a 30-3 thrashing at the Rutgers Athletic Center. Sean McCabe (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) opened the dual with a major decision and Billy Smith (Wantage, N.J.) scored a dramatic 8-5 tiebreaker win to end the evening.

The Scarlet Knights have won eight consecutive home matches dating back to last season and are undefeated “On the Banks” in 2015-16.

McCabe charged up the crowd from the outset with a gutsy performance in the third period to close out a major decision over Michael Beck. Leading 7-2 entering the final stanza, McCabe took shot after shot for two third-period takedowns in his 13-4 win.

Maryland took the 133-pound bout with a 9-2 win from No. 16 Geoffrey Alexander over No. 18 Anthony Giraldo (Guttenberg, N.J.).

At 141 pounds, the Terrapins’ Alfred Bannister made it interesting late against No. 6 Anthony Ashnault (South Plainfield, N.J.) by notching a takedown with 12 seconds on the clock. But the surge was not enough, as Ashnault climbed to 19-2 overall and 13-1 in dual competition with a 7-5 win.

Strong wins at 149 and 157 pounds put the Scarlet Knights ahead at the break, 13-3.

149-pounder Tyson Dippery (Harrisburg, Pa.) racked up 1:23 of riding time in a 4-0 win, while 157-pounder Richie Lewis (Toms River, N.J.) accrued a 1:03 advantage in a 6-2 decision. Dippery improved to 12-8, with Lewis jumping to 15-3 overall.

No. 8 Anthony Perrotti (Roseland, N.J.) etched another “W” for Rutgers out of the intermission in a 15-0 tech fall against Tyler Manion. The tech fall, Perrotti’s third of the season, brings him to 15-2 overall and 13-1 in dual competition.

The dual concluded with four consecutive decisions from 174 pounds to heavyweight. Phillip Bakuckas (Hammonton, N.J.) finished one point shy of a major decision at 174, while Nicholas Gravina (Allendale, N.J.) and Hayden Hrymack (Point Pleasant, N.J.) cruised in convincing decisions at 184 and 197 pounds, respectively.

Last up was Smith, who after eight minutes of action was tied, 5-5, with Dawson Peck. Smith kept Peck on the mat in the first tiebreaker period and in the second 30-second period escaped and got a takedown to seal it.

Smith improves to 18-5 overall.

Rutgers travels to wrestle in-state rival Princeton (2-5, 1-3) at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Jadwin Gym. The Scarlet Knights have won their last 19 matches against the Tigers. The match will stream live on the Ivy League Digital Network.

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ—The Broncs won all 10 bouts to defeat Bloomsburg in an Eastern Wrestling League dual meet Friday night. “Blooms is going through a tough time right now and I feel for that, having been there,” said Rider head coach Gary Taylor. “Our kids wrestled pretty well tonight.”

For Rider (7-8, 3-2 EWL) senior Robert Deutsch (Cherry Hill, NJ/Eastern Regional) won a major decision, sophomore Wayne Stinson (Wrightstown, NJ/Northern Burlington Regional) won a major decision, freshman Michale Fagg-Daves  (Somerset, NJ/Franklin) won by a major decision and junior Ryan Wolfe (New Castle, Del./Caravel) won by major decision.

Wolfe won for the sixth straight time and improved to 19-8 overall, 5-0 in the EWL. Since placing eighth at the prestigious Midlands Championships Wolfe is 7-1 in his last eight dual meets. “His experience at Midlands really helped Ryan,” Taylor said.  “In the beginning of the year Ryan was still adjusting to moving up two weight classes. He was wrestling at such a fast pace. At 197 you have to be a bit more careful. At Midlands he learned that at this weight it is more of a positional match.”

“I think I peaked at Midlands,” said Wolfe, who was an EWL champion last year at 174.  “That got my confidence up. I’m learning how to relax and just wrestle my style, not the style of my opponent. Competing against the level I did at Midlands and being right with them really helped me.”

Senior Conor Brennan (Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.), ranked ninth in the nation, returned to the lineup after missing the last five matches and won. “It is good to have our full team back,” Taylor said.

Brennan improved to 19-2 overall, 2-0 in the EWL.

Rider sophomore Chad Walsh (Cherry Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic) and sophomore Mauro Correnti (Delran, N.J./Holy Cross) also won decisions.

Walsh, ranked 15th in the nation, improved to 18-5 overall, 5-0 in the EWL.

For Bloomsburg (1-13, 0-4 EWL) red-shirt freshman Brendon Colbert gave nationally ranked Walsh a tight match and briefly led 5-4. He was the only Huskie to hold a lead all night.

Rider has now won 10 of the 16 meetings with Bloomsburg, including the last three. The last time Bloomsburg defeated Rider was during the 2008-09 season.

The Broncs compete at the University of Pennsylvania Sunday at 12 noon and return to Alumni Gym to host George Mason in an EWL dual at 6pm Sunday. “That’s kind of annoying, having to do that,” Wolfe said, “but we trust the coaches. They know what they are doing. They are trying to get us to peak at the right time. So I’m sure this is good for us.”

“A day like that, it is tough for the guys to do that, but that’s what makes them tough,” Taylor said.  “Mason is a conference match and very important but right now we are just concentrating on Penn. I can’t even think about Mason yet.”

“We’re coming together right now,” Wolfe said. “We have our starting lineup back so I think we are going to finish strong.”

Alexander Wins Fourth Straight at No. 12 Rutgers

Terps Drop Nine Bouts to 12th-Ranked Scarlet Knights

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Redshirt senior Geoffrey Alexander (133) picked up the lone win for Maryland Friday evening, downing 18th ranked Anthony Giraldo of No. 12/12 Rutgers by decision 9-2. It was all Scarlet Knights the rest of the way as the hosts won the next eight bouts and nine total for the 30-3 team decision. Rutgers improves to 12-3 and 3-2 in the Big Ten, while Maryland drops to 4-10 (1-6 Big Ten).

Alexander nearly had Giraldo pinned in the opening seconds of the bout at the Rutgers Athletic Center (RAC), taking the Scarlet Knight down and flipping him on his back. Giraldo managed to get away after several seconds of trouble, but Alexander came away with a six-point lead after a four-point near fall. He remained in control for the remainder of the match before sealing the 9-2 decision to remain unbeaten (5-0) in duals.

Redshirt Sophomore Dawson Peck (285) provided one of the night’s most entertaining matches, nearly knocking off No. 13 Billy Smith in the heavyweight bout. Peck had the first takedown and a 2-1 lead at the end of the first period, but a reversal and takedown for Smith in the second turned the tables.

Peck managed two escapes to tie the match at five and force OT, and the wrestlers went to the tiebreak periods after going scoreless in sudden victory. After failing to escape from the bottom, Peck elected to cut Smith and go for the takedown, but couldn’t put the Scarlet Knight to the mat as Smith eventually came out ahead 8-5.

All five of Rutgers’ ranked wrestlers turned in victories, including a technical fall for 2014 All-American and eighth ranked Anthony Perrotti at 165. No. 20 Sean McCabe provided the other bonus point win for Rutgers, while seven more decisions sealed the win for the Scarlet Knights.

The Terps will return to the mat on Friday, February 5 when the squad hosts No. 6/8 Michigan in College Park. Match time is slated for 7:00 pm.

SUBJECT: Rams Shoot Lights Out as Wilmington Men’s Basketball Can’t Overcome Slow Start in 71-58 CACC Defeat
DATE: January 26, 2016
djl
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – – Philadelphia shot 58 percent from the floor and scored 46 of its points in the paint to take down the Wilmington University men’s basketball team, 71-58, in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference South Division action at the Gallagher Center on Tuesday night.
The Wildcats (6-15, 1-11 CACC) got off to a slow start in falling behind the Rams (18-4, 11-2 CACC), 12-2, in the first five and a half minutes of the game. The Wildcats were never fully able to recover from the slow start.
The Philadelphia frontcourt proved fits for the Wildcats all night long, as 46 of the team’s 71 points (65 percent) came from inside the paint. The Rams also came up with eight blocked shots on the defensive end, aiding in the Wildcats only shooting 35.3 percent from the floor for the game. The Wildcats were able to force 14 turnovers and turn them into 15 points at the other end.
Once down 12 at the beginning of the game, the Wildcats could only claw back to as few as eight points throughout the rest of the game, as the Rams had an answer for every Wildcat run.
Sam Sanders hit his lone three-pointer of the game at the 9:34 mark of the first half to cut the Rams’ lead to 22-13. Two more free throws from Sanders brought the Wildcats to within 24-15 before Drew Johnson II converted a steal from Tyaire Ponzo-Meek and flushed one home for a 25-17 deficit. After Ponzo-Meek laid one home to again get the margin to eight-points, the Rams scored six of the last eight points of the half to head into the locker room leading, 33-21.
A Brian Adkins three-pointer brought the Wildcats to within 35-27 early in the second half, but the Rams again answered with a bucket at the other end to thwart any momentum for the visitors.
The lead was out to 11 points for the Rams before Johnson hit a three-pointer with 12:42 left in regulation to cut the lead to 40-32. But Mike Louden answered with the lone three-pointer for the Rams all night on the ensuing possession. Again Ponzo-Meek hit a three-pointer for the Wildcats but Louden answered once more with a jumper to keep the Wildcats at an arm’s length, 45-35, with 11:20 to play.
The Rams’ largest lead of the night came at the 6:36 mark, as the home team converted an old fashioned three-point play to take a 56-40 lead.
Johnson led the Wildcats with a career high 20 points on 9-of-12 shooting from the floor, hitting 2-of-3 form beyond the three-point arc. Ponzo-Meek scored 15 points while adding a team high nine rebounds, five of which came on the offensive glass.
The Wildcats remain on the road for another CACC contest, this time head to a North Division foe on Saturday. The Wildcats head to Dominican where they last defeated the Chargers in the CACC Tournament Quarterfinals last season. The men follow the women and tip-off at approximately 3:00 p.m.

The Game

In the second contest of its season-long three-game home stretch, the Delaware State women’s basketball team (5-13, 2-3 MEAC) will welcome the North Carolina Central Eagles (3-13, 2-4 MEAC) to Memorial Hall Wednesday evening (5 p.m.).

The Opponent

» North Carolina Central Eagles (3-13, 2-4 MEAC)

The well-rested Eagles enter Wednesday’s contest dropping three out of its last five games, with its last victory coming against the winless Norfolk State Spartans at home on Jan. 16.  Ranked 13th in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) in scoring (49.7 ppg), NCCU’s offensive attack is led by the duo of guard Morgan Jones (11.5 ppg) and forward Tisha Dixon (10.1 ppg).  Dixon is also the Eagles’ top-rebounder at 7.2 per contest, while Jones is NCCU’s leader in 3-pointers made (22) and steals (24).  Head coach Vanessa Taylor is in her fourth season with NCCU, after spending 11 years at Johnson C. Smith. In 2014-15, she led the Eagles to a 7-22 overall mark.

The Series (DSU Leads 3-2)

The Hornets have lost the last two meetings against the Eagles, with both coming on the road.  Last season, DSU suffered a 66-59 defeat, thanks to guard Morgan Jones pouring in 14 (5-of-9) second half points.  For the Lady Hornets, forward Amber Bogard tallied 18 points (7-of-18), eight boards and two blocks, while guard Mikah Aldridge chipped in with 17 points (7-of-17).  DSU’s last victory over NCCU occurred at home on Feb. 2, 2013 by way of a 58-49 triumph.

A Win Would Mean…

» Delaware State’s fourth home win this season.

» DSU would surpass its overall and conference win totals from 2014-15.

» The Hornets would avoid dropping back-to-back games for the fourth time this season.

Last Time Out…

DSU suffered an 84-64 loss at home to the North Carolina A&T Aggies (9-9, 5-2 MEAC) Monday night, headlined by the Lady Hornets being outscored 30-21 in the third quarter.  With this defeat, DSU failed to register back-to-back wins for the first time this season, in addition to dropping its fifth consecutive contest to the Aggies.  NCAT, meanwhile, has now won five out of its last six games to move to .500 on the season.  DSU saw its leading scorer Amber Bogard (12.5 ppg) foul out by the time the final buzzer sounded, in addition to scoring just six points (2-of-5) to see her streak of tallying double figures come to a screeching halt at 10 games.  Guard Mikah Aldridge, meanwhile, totaled a team-high 16 points (6-of-15), but was 0-for-6 from 3-point range.  Forward NaJai Pollard also scored in double figures (10), yet committed a team-high five turnovers.

Forward NaJai Pollard is 26-for-48 (.542) from the field in her last five games, along with averaging 6.2 rebounds per contest… Forward Amber Bogard has scored in doubles figures in 10 out of her last 11 games (14.2 ppg)… Guard Mikah Aldridge leads the MEAC in free throw percentage (.812).

Balanced Attack

Sitting sixth in the MEAC in scoring (58.6 ppg), DSU is the only team in the conference to have three players that sit in the top 20 in points per game.  Leading the way is guard Mikah Aldridge (12.4 ppg), followed by forwards Amber Bogard (12.1 ppg) and NaJai Pollard (10.2 ppg).

At This Point Last Season…

The Lady Hornets were 3-15 (1-5 MEAC), coming off a 66-59 loss at NCCU.

Coming Up Next…

The Columbia Blue & Red will conclude their three-game home stretch this Saturday afternoon (2 p.m.) against South Carolina State.  Earlier this season on Jan. 16, DSU suffered a 61-48 loss at SCSU.

Goldey-Beacom Men’s Basketball Handed 76-62 Loss at Chestnut Hill

Goldey-Beacom faced a big test in its hopes of making the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament, but left Philadelphia with a 76-62 setback at Chestnut Hill.

The first meeting between the teams this season saw Chestnut Hill shoot 26 percent from the floor in the first half.  The home side did much better in the opening stanza of game two, hitting 58 percent (18-of-31) for a 41-32 lead thanks to nine points from Luke Dickson and eight apiece from Noel Hightower and Edward McWade.

Chestnut Hill, which never trailed, kept it going in the second half with a 12-3 run spanning just over four minutes for a 63-46 cushion with 8:11 remaining.  McWade, who went on a torrid shooting spree through most of the contest, scored eight points in that span and Antonio Toplyn Jr. added four.

McWade scored 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting and was 5-of-8 from three-point range.  Dickson netted 14 points, Hightower had 12 and 10 rebounds with Toplyn Jr. getting 12 and seven for the Griffins, who shot 51 percent (29-of-57) from the field and canned 3-pointers.

Shakeem Wilson (Brooklyn, NY) scored all 16 of his points in the second half, fellow junior Elijah Tillman (Garnerville, NY) had 15 and 11 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season and junior Sameen Swint (Sicklerville, NJ) added 11 points for GBC, which shot 35 percent (22-of-63) from the floor.

The Lightning (7-13, 5-6 CACC) and the Griffins (8-11, 5-6) now are tied for the fourth and final conference-tournament spot in the South Division.  GBC was attempting to complete its first season sweep of Chestnut Hill since the 2007-08 season.

Goldey-Beacom opens a four-game homestand Saturday vs. Nyack.  The women’s game is at 1:00 pm and the men’s contest starts at 3:00 pm.

SUBJECT: Long Cold Spell Harms Wilmington Women’s Basketball in 61-53 Loss at Philadelphia
DATE: January 26, 2016
djl
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – – After a quick start on the offensive end, the Wilmington University women’s basketball team couldn’t keep up with Philadelphia, 61-53, in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference South Division tilt at the Gallagher Center on Tuesday night.
The Wildcats (10-11, 5-7 CACC) started the game shooting 8-for-11 from the field, holding onto the lead for the majority of the first quarter. But the basket seemed to shrink on the visitors, as they shot 7-for-36 from the field beginning with the final 1:45 of the first quarter through the end of the third quarter.
The Rams (16-5, 12-0 CACC) also started hot, hitting shot for shot with the Wildcats through the first quarter. Philadelphia shot 9-for-16 in the first quarter and scored the final six points of the frame to take a 20-18 lead into the second quarter.
With the lid closed on the Wildcats’ offensive basket, the Rams took advantage and continued to shoot 45.45 percent from the floor through the first three quarters, expanding the lead with scores of 19-8 in the second quarter and 15-9 in the third quarter. The Rams gained their largest lead of the game, 54-31, with 1:52 left in the third quarter.
Down 58-37 early in the fourth quarter, the Wildcats began their fourth quarter comeback, scoring the next six consecutive points and going on an 11-2 run overall to cut the deficit to 60-48. Lindsay Bradford started the spark with a pair form the free throw line before Auryonah Nash and Ashri Broadwater made back-to-back layup for the quick 6-0 spurt. Another personal 4-0 run by Broadwater followed by a free throw from Zameria Jones had the score to 60-48, but with only 32 seconds left. Macy Robinson hit the team’s lone three-pointer of the game with 15 seconds to play before Jones settled the final score with a layup in the waning seconds, 61-53.
Broadwater paced the Wildcats with 14 points while also grabbing seven rebounds. Jordan Hawkins chipped in with nine points while grabbing a team high 10 rebounds and picking up three blocks.
The Wildcats shot 35 percent (21-for-60) from the floor for the game while the Rams went 22-for-56 (39.3 percent) for the game, including just 2-for-12 in the fourth quarter to allow the Wildcats to get back into the contest. The Rams also hit five three-pointers to the Wildcats’ one.
Wilmington remains on the road to close out the month of January, as they head to Dominican on Saturday for a CACC cross division contest. The women begin the CACC doubleheader with a 1:00 p.m. opening tip.

Goldey-Beacom Women’s Basketball Falls, 72-69, at Chestnut Hill

Goldey-Beacom was doomed by a fourth-quarter run from Chestnut Hill and its best effort late fell short in a 72-69 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference loss in Philadelphia, PA.

The Griffins were down 60-54 in the fourth quarter when a 10-0 spurt put them on the other side of a 64-60 contest with 2:48 left.  Caity Kuhnen scored four points in the run and closed things on a short jumper.

Sophomore Mikila Stefanski (Hammonton, NJ) gave GBC life by canning a huge 3-pointer to make it 64-63, but Brittany McDonough came back on the other end with her own triple for a four-point game with 2:08 remaining.

Sophomore Lexi Bruno (Millville, NJ) made a layup to help the Lightning close to 67-65 with 1:34 to play.  Now a stop was needed from the vistors and they got it when freshman Tanner Turner-Rush (Harrisburg, PA) drew a charge, which was the fifth foul from Mary Trossi.

GBC now had its chance for the tie, but junior Jazz Lewis (Mount Holly, NJ) misfired on a short jumper and Chestnut Hill got the rebound.  The Lightning were hoping for another stop, but Chestnut Hill’s Lauren Milligan made a huge layup with 27 seconds to play for a 69-65 game.

Sophomore Britani Bryson (Hampton, VA) hit a layup to bring GBC within 69-67 and it got life when Kuhnen made only 1-of-2 from the line with 15 seconds remaining for a 70-67 game.

The Lightning once again looked for the tie on the other end, but the perimeter was guarded and they had to settle for Lewis’ layup with 4.7 seconds to play for a 70-69 game.  Kuhnen hit two free throws with 3.4 seconds left for a 72-69 contest, but Bruno’s 30-foot attempt for the tie fell short as time expired.

Bruno scored 17 points, Stefanski netted 15 to go with five 3-pointers and Bryson had 14 points and 14 rebounds for her eighth double-double of the season.

Kuhnen scored 24 points on 7-of-13 shooting with four 3-pointers, McDonough netted 15, Jaeda Wildgoose scored 12 and Milligan added 10 for the Griffins, who shot 45 percent (28-of-62) from the floor and owned a 48-39 rebounding edge.

GBC (5-15, 5-6 CACC) and Chestnut Hill (7-11, 5-6) now are part of a three-way tie with University of the Sciences (5-6) for third place in the CACC South Division.  The top four teams in each of the two divisions advance to the conference tournament.

Goldey-Beacom went on a 13-0 run bridging the first two quarters to open a 29-21 lead with 7:13 left in the first half.  Bruno began to take charge during that spurt with four points and Bryson also had four.

Bruno scored 10 in the opening half for the Lightning, who gained a 39-34 lead thanks in part to forcing 11 Griffins turnovers.  Bruno shot 4-of-8 from the floor in the half to help her squad shoot 41 percent (16-of-39) from the field in that span.

Goldey-Beacom opens a four-game homestand Saturday vs. Nyack.  The women’s game is at 1:00 pm and the men’s contest starts at 3:00 pm.
