Subject: Bakersfield Blaze Game Recap 06-28-15: The Snake Charmer Pitches Blaze to 4-2 Win
To:

Fresh off saving a desert snake from certain doom, Tyler Pike led the Bakersfield Blaze to a win in the finale of a four game homestand, 4-2, over the visiting Lancaster Jethawks, on Sunday night in Bakersfield.

In the 8th inning on Saturday night, Pike (W, 1-3) became a social media phenomenon for picking up a live snake on the field. On Sunday, Pike became a fan favorite, dominating the Jethawks for 6.1 innings (his longest outing of 2015), allowing just one run (which scored after he left the game), while striking out seven.
The Blaze did most of their offensive work in the 3rd. Akeem Bostick (L, 0-1), making his Cal League debut, struggled early, and the Blaze came up with four hits and an error in the frame to plate three runs for a 3-0 lead.
The Jethawks cut the deficit to 3-2 when Chase McDonald homered off Aaron Brooks in the top of the 7th, but Bakersfield came back with an insurance run in the home half to regain a 4-2 lead.
Rafael Pineda (S, 4) pitched a 1-2-3 8th inning, snapping a streak of 27 straight innings that Lancaster had a baserunner reach safely, but the game got a bit interesting in the 9th.
A pair of Jethawks hits put the tying runs on base with one out, and a liner headed for centerfield appeared poised to move the tying runs into scoring position. But Pineda, through some sort of sorcery, reached up and gloved it to save the day. Tyler O’Neill followed with a diving grab in rightfield to end the game and preserve the 4-2 win.
For Bakersfield, Nelson Ward had a pair of RBIs in a two-hit game, and Tim Lopes had another two hits as well. Aaron Barbosa singled in the team’s fourth run in the team’s nine hit attack.
The win gets the Blaze on the board in the second half, and the club heads into Monday’s OFF day with a little momentum.
On Tuesday, the Blaze open up a series in Modesto. The four game set will run through Friday before the club comes home on July 4th for a contest that is expected to sell out 24-48 hours in advance. Get tickets now.
The opener in Modesto is set for a 7:05pm start time, and fans can listen to the action online at BakersfieldBlaze.com and TuneIn Radio. Dan Besbris has the call.

Christian Walker hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning, powering Norfolk to a 5-4 win over the Toledo Mud Hens Sunday afternoon at Harbor Park.

With one out and the score knotted at 4-4, Walker lofted a 1-0 pitch from Alberto Cabrera (2-2) over the right-center field fence for his fourth homer of the season. It was the second consecutive walk-off win vs. Toledo for the Tides, who have now won six straight games for the first time this season.

Walker, the #3 prospect in the Orioles system, finished with three hits and two RBI in the victory as he extended his hitting streak to seven games. Over that stretch, he’s hit .451 (14-41) with two home runs, three doubles and five RBI.

Henry Urrutia had three hits and three RBI to help pace Norfolk’s 13-hit attack, while Steve Clevenger and Michael Almanzar each added two hits apiece. The Tides swept the abbreviated two-game set from Toledo and have now won 12 consecutive home games vs. the Mud Hens.

Norfolk starter Kevin Gausman, making his first appearance with the Tides in 2015, allowed just one hit over three shutout innings of work. The 24-year-old LSU product allowed three of the first four batters of the game to reach base but quickly settled down – retiring each of the final seven batters he faced. He walked two and struck out three while throwing 22 of his 41 pitches for strikes.

Gausman was followed by Mike Wright, who was pitching with the Tides for the first time since being optioned to Norfolk from Baltimore on June 20. Wright surrendered four runs on five hits over 4.1 innings of relief, with the big blow against him being a three-run homer by Jefry Marte in the sixth inning. Wright struck out two and walked two, throwing 51 of his 78 pitches for strikes.

Oliver Drake (1-1) earned the victory by throwing a scoreless ninth inning. Drake has now turned in 17 consecutive scoreless appearances with the Tides, over which he’s held opposing batters to a .119 average (7-59).

Norfolk welcomes the first place Charlotte Knights to town on Monday night for the start of a three-game series. Chris Jones (4-4, 2.38) gets the start for the Tides against right-hander Shawn Haviland (3-4, 4.75).

Notes: Earlier Sunday, RHP Dane De La Rosa was placed on Norfolk’s Retired List…Mike Wright’s relief appearances was his first since September 3, 2011, when he tossed 4.0 innings out of the bullpen with Class-A Delmarva…Steve Clevenger has now hit safely in 10 consecutive games at Harbor Park, over which he’s batted .485 (16-33)…Henry Urrutia has reached base safely in 14 consecutive home games, over which he’s hit .385 (20-52)…The walk-off win was Norfolk’s sixth of 2015.

Cessa & Cecchini Help B-Mets Right Ship, 3-1

AKRON, OH – Luis Cessa threw seven scoreless innings and Gavin Cecchini delivered a three-run double to push the Binghamton Mets to a 3-1 win over the Akron RubberDucks on Sunday afternoon at Canal Park. Cessa’s team-leading seventh victory ended Binghamton’s four-game losing streak.

After navigating through three scoreless innings, Cessa needed an unorthodox double play to wiggle out of a jam in the fourth. With two aboard and one out, Jordan Smith hit a humpback liner to second. LJ Mazzilli caught the drive, but threw high to first in an attempt to double off the runner. Catcher Xorge Carrillo backed up the play and fired to third where Josh Rodriguez tagged out Anthony Gallas attempting to advance a base.

On the heels Fof that defense stand, Binghamton finally snapped their offensive funk in the fifth. Following a leadoff walk by Josh Rodriguez, Aderlin Rodriguez dropped a single into left-field, ending a stretch of 29 straight hitless at-bats for the B-Mets, dating back to the fourth inning on Saturday night.

Akron shortstop Erik Gonzalez added fuel to the Binghamton rally and loaded the bases by booting Jared King’s ground ball. Cecchini cleared them by ripping Morimando’s 1-2 pitch into the left-field corner. Cecchini’s double, his 16th of the season and Binghamton’s first hit with a runner in scoring position since Thursday gave the visitors a 3-0 lead.

Cessa got stronger as the game progressed. After Yandy Diaz tripled with two outs in the sixth, the righty blew three fastballs past Anthony Gallas to end the frame. Cessa capped his strong day with a perfect seventh.

Following Matt Koch’s perfect eighth, Paul Sewald took over in the ninth. Gallas dashed Binghamton’s shutout hopes by launching a two-out solo homer, his seventh of the season. Sewald bounded back to retire Ronny Rodriguez for his 14th save of the year.

Cessa (7-4) struck out six and walked only one while scattering six hits in his fourth win in six starts. Morimando (5-7) was touched for three runs (two earned) on three hits over six innings in the loss.

The B-Mets (38-36) conclude their season series against the RubberDucks on Monday night at 7:05 PM. RHP Michael Fulmer takes the mound against RHP Mike Clevinger. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame Show can be heard starting at 6:50 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF and the Binghamton Mets channel on TuneIn.

POSTGAME NOTES: In two starts at Canal Park Luis Cessa has earned two wins and thrown 14.0 scoreless innings…Binghamton secured the season series win over the RubberDucks with the victory…the game clocked in at 2:09, the B-Mets second-shortest nine-inning game, trailing only Saturday night’s 2:04 affair

LYNCHBURG SHOCKS SALEM WITH SIX-RUN NINTH

Zimmer hits go-ahead grand slam to give Hillcats 10-6 win

SALEM, Va. – Bradley Zimmer blasted a go-ahead grand slam in the top of the ninth inning, capping of a six-run frame for the Lynchburg Hillcats as they stunned the Salem Red Sox, 10-6, on Sunday afternoon at LewisGale Field.

Lynchburg trailed 6-4 entering the final frame but quickly tied things up. After Eric Haase worked a leadoff walk against German Taveras, Mike Papi turned on the first pitch he saw and cranked a two-run bomb to right to even the score at six.

The Hillcats then loaded the bases with one out on a pair of singles and a walk. Zimmer hammered the second he pitch he saw over the right-field wall for the go-ahead grand slam, giving the Hillcats a 10-6 lead. Salem had an opportunity to make some noise in the last of the ninth, loading the bases with one out. However, Ben Heller got Tzu-Wei Lin to ground into a game-ending 5-4-3 double play.

Lynchburg also started the contest with a bang when Luigi Rodriguez blasted the first pitch of the game deep to left-center for a leadoff home run. Rodriguez’s league-leading 11th home run gave the Hillcats a 1-0 lead.

The seesaw nature of the affair started early with Salem answering in the bottom half of the frame to tie the game. Lin smacked a ball to the left-center field gap that Rodriguez misplayed and bobbled while attempting to gather it. Clint Frazier picked it up off the bobble and threw wide to third, allowing Lin to score. The double and two errors tied the game at 1-1 after one inning.

Mauricio Dubon gave Salem a 2-1 advantage by scoring Jordan Weems with a sacrifice fly in the second. It remained 2-1 until the fourth inning when Haase clubbed a two-out, two-run homer deep to left field, vaulting the Hillcats back in front, 3-2.

The Sox tied it again in the fifth when Jose Vinicio drove home Dubon on an RBI groundout. The tie was short-lived, though, as Lynchburg answered in the top of the sixth with an RBI single from Haase, scoring Zimmer for a 4-3 advantage. Weems tied the game up at four in the home half with a single scoring Wendell Rijo.

Salem appeared to take the lead for good with two runs in the seventh. Jordan Betts belted a solo shot to leadoff the frame, his fourth homer of the month and the season. The Sox got insurance when Vinicio, who had doubled following Betts, scored on a sac fly from Lin to give the Red Sox a 6-4 advantage. However, Taveras (3-1) blew his first save of the season, allowing his first earned runs since May 20. He gave up six runs on five hits in two innings on the bump.

The Hillcats homered four times, accounting for nine of their 10 tallies. Zimmer was 2-for-4 with a grand slam, three runs scored and four RBI. Haase went 2-for-4 with a homer, three RBI and two runs scored.

Casey Weathers (2-1) picked up the win with 1.1 hitless innings and only a walk and hit-by-pitch against. Heller shut the door for his eighth save, recording two outs on just five pitches.

Teddy Stankiewicz was in line for his third win of the season, but ended up with a no-decision. The righthander lasted seven frames, giving up four runs on six hits with three walks and two strikeouts. Michael Peoples yielded four runs, three earned, in six innings for Lynchburg.

Salem and Lynchburg will continue the three-game series Monday night at 7:05 p.m. Kevin McAvoy (4-6, 4.28) will start for the Sox against D.J. Brown (4-3, 4.95). Fans unable to attend can listen to the game on 1240 AM ESPN Roanoke, online at salemsox.com or via the TuneIn Radio app.

DELLE DONNE’S 26 NOT ENOUGH AS SKY FALL TO MYSTICS

Score by Quarter

Chicago (5-4)                           16       18         14        23         71

Washington (6-3)                   24       19         23        20         86

CHICAGO- On Sunday afternoon, the WNBA’s leading scorer Elena Delle Donne and the Chicago Sky (5-4) returned to the court for a second consecutive road game, this time at the Verizon Center, as they took on the Washington Mystics (6-3). Despite 26 points and seven rebounds from Delle Donne, the Sky was unable to overcome a 20-point deficit in the third quarter as they fell 86-71 to the Mystics on the road.

Elena Delle Donne was aggressive early, scoring eight points to lead Chicago in the first quarter as the Sky and Mystics battled back-and-forth but Washington extended a 24-16 lead after one and never looked back. Meesseman set the tone for Washington early going 5-for-5 from the field with 10 points in the first.

Meeseman’s hot shooting continued as the Mystics used a 12-6 run to start the second quarter, doubling their lead (30-16). The Sky responded, however, with an 8-0 run of their own, led by four points and two assists from Delle Donne, to pull back within seven points (33-26) with 5:49 remaining in the half. Despite trailing by as many as 15 in the first half, the Sky cut the deficit to just nine at the break (43-34).

Washington made an adjustment defensively in the third quarter as they held Delle Donne scoreless in over eight minutes of action. Dolson poured in 12 points in the third quarter to help Washington take a 66-48 lead heading into the fourth.

Entering the fourth quarter, Chicago had only been to the free throw line twice. Prior to Sunday’s game, the Sky averaged 22.5 free throw attempts per game. Despite a 14-point effort from Delle Donne in the fourth quarter, the Sky could not pull any closer than 11 (80-69) and the Mystics earned an 86-71 victory at home.

“Truthfully it’s the 86 points they scored that we are most upset about,” said Delle Donne. “Putting up 71 that’s not too bad a game, unfortunately we weren’t able to get stops and that affects our offense a big amount.”

Delle Donne led all scorers in the game with 26 points and seven rebounds. Allie Quigley and Cappie Pondexter were the only other Sky players to reach double figures contributing 10 points apiece. Meesseman led Washington with 20 points while Dolson contributed a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds.

The Sky will look to bounce back against the New York Liberty on June 30th at Allstate Arena. The nationally televised game beginning at 7pm CT on ESPN2 marks Chicago’s annual “Pride Night”. Fans are also invited to attend a pregame panel led by espnW’s Mechelle Voepel tipping off at 6:15pm. To purchase tickets call 866.SKY.WNBA or visit CHICAGOSKY.NET.

QUOTES

Chicago Sky Head Coach and General Manager Pokey Chatman

(Overall thoughts on the game…)

“First off, congratulations to Washington. I thought they got off to a quick start offensively and we never quite gained the momentum back. We had a couple of runs but we had breakdowns in areas where you can’t have them, like transition offense. Missed layups… transition three, turnover… transition two and those are the things we can clean up against any teams in the league let alone against a team that is playing well. They’re at home, got a lot of weapons and that’s just something we [have] to work on.”

(On the Mystics dominating the third quarter…)

“Well I don’t think they changed a lot because of what they were doing in the first half worked so they kept going to it. I thought we didn’t have as good of an awareness for extended periods of time. The action would happen on the side and we were hugging our man, not in help, not in a rotation and quite honestly a couple of those threes they hit were contested. In the first half they were open but when you give a team, any team, momentum and confidence then those wide open shots that you get a little closer when they’re contested they started hitting some of those to the tune of fouling and the three point shots.”

Chicago Sky Guard/Forward Elena Delle Donne

(On the Mystics defense…)

“Truthfully it’s the 86 points they scored that we are most upset about. Putting up 71 that’s not too bad a game, unfortunately we weren’t able to get stops and that affects our offense a big amount.”

(Thoughts moving forward…)

“I think the biggest thing is we just have to become more of a consistent team defensively.”

Washington Mystics Head Coach Mike Thibault

(Overall thoughts on the game…)

“They are a great shooting team and we tried to make them take certain kinds of shots. You know, [Elena] Delle Donne is tough. I guess I should feel good we held her three below her average.  She’s going to get some calls, she’s a great free throw shooter. What I thought obviously our rebounding was a little better. We’ll wait until we play other teams but that’s a good first step and I thought offensively we executed. We moved the ball, made the extra pass, 24 on 35 baskets is pretty good. Stef (Stefanie Dolson) did a good job on the boards, obviously Emma’s [Meesseman] doing what Emma does. I thought Tayler [Hill] gave us a huge lift tonight coming off of the bench. Tierra Ruffin-Pratt is kind of unheralded tonight because she gets that kind of non-glorious assignment. She has to guard Cappie [Pondexter]. I thought you know, she did a really good job at frustrating her tonight. It wasn’t anybody that played poorly, we had a lot of people play. Ivory [Latta] gets a big four point play down the stretch. Kara [Lawson] makes a couple baskets there when we were kind of faltering a little bit. So we had a lot of good things tonight.”

(On Meesseman’s growth…)

“You know I’ve been touting Emma’s horn all season. I think she’s an All-Star. It would be a pretty good All-Star game to see her and Delle Donne playing together but I think that gives us something to throw back at teams as a weapon, it’s pretty sensational for us right now. “

(On the rebounding…)

“I told our team until we do it two or three times in a row I’m not giving them the benefit of the doubt yet. So they got to do a little bit better of a job for several games and then I’ll be happy.”

Washington Mystics Center Stefanie Dolson

(Overall thoughts on the game and her development…)

“I think I’ve had a little bit more confidence lately. Obviously you know, it sucks not having Kia [Vaughn] here but it gives people an opportunity to step up and in practice I’ve been getting a lot of reps. So I’ve just been trying to go in and have the mentality of working as hard as I can, doing what the coach asks and when I get the opportunity to score the basketball.

(On tonight’s rebounding versus the last two games…)

“Just the emphasis on it in practice.  Coach is making sure that we’re always working on it and we always have it in our head. As posts we had a goal for ourselves today, certain number of rebounds as something to reach for. So going into the game, we really had it in our minds. We had the mentality of making the extra effort.”
