SAINT LOUIS OVERCOMES ILLINOIS IN SUNDAY MATCH

The Illini fell to the Billikens, 1-0

  1. LOUIS, Mo. –Fighting Illini Soccer fell to 2-2-0 on the season Sunday, with a 1-0 loss at Saint Louis. An early penalty kick gave the Billikens the advantage in the match, and despite several late scoring attempts, the Illini could not overcome Saint Louis.

“I think the biggest mistake tonight was that we came out flat in the first half,” head coach Janet Rayfield said after the match. “Penalty kick aside, we saw a more physical style of play on Friday and It’s tough when you turn around and have to adjust. I think we just didn’t snap out of that, and it took us out of our game in the first half.”

The Billiken offense was aggressive from the beginning, and Saint Louis converted the penalty kick in just the fourth minute of play. The Illini stayed strong on defense throughout the half, but Saint Louis managed to record 10 shots to Illinois’ two. Illini goalkeeper Michelle Denley grabbed two first-half saves, coming through in the clutch as she shut down a Saint Louis breakaway in the 25th minute.

The Orange and Blue picked up the pace to start the second half, Illinois had several good looks early on as Patricia George carded Illinois’ first shot on goal taking advantage of a breakaway down the left side of the field. Not long after, senior Hope D’Addario fired a free kick at the Billiken keeper from just outside the box. Freshman Kelly Maday had a scoring attempt of her own as she beat the Billiken keeper but fired the ball just to the left of the goalpost.

“I thought we responded and we played much better in the second half,” Rayfield said. “In the last 10 minutes we played with a goal-scoring mentality. I told the team at the end, that should be our mentality from the beginning. We should be the team that’s going to come out trying to score goals. That’s how you win this game. We’ve got to change our mentality about the game, certainly we worked a lot on defense, but the way you win games is by scoring goals.”

Senior goalkeeper Claire Wheatley made her first appearance for the Illini this season, playing the second half of the match. She tallied two saves for the Orange and Blue. Denley finished with two saves for UI as well, and has a 2-2-0 record this year.

Illinois will continue its road swing next weekend, heading to Texas to face both TCU and Texas A&M. Stay tuned to FIGHTIINGILLINI.com for all the latest on Illinois Soccer.

The Charlotte Knights pounded out 17 hits and got an exceptional start from their top prospect in a 14-4 win over the Tides Sunday night at Harbor Park.

Carson Fulmer (1-1), the White Sox top rated prospect according to MLB.com, opened the contest by retiring all 15 batters he faced. The Vanderbilt product, who was selected by Chicago with the eighth overall pick in the 2015 draft, threw 47 of his 72 pitches for strikes en route to earning his first career Triple-A victory.

Norfolk starter Odrisamer Despaigne (1-8) took the loss after yielding six runs on six hits over 4.1 innings of work. He walked two and struck out three, but yielded a three-run homer to Nicky Delmonico in the fourth inning before departing with the bases loaded in the fifth. All three of those runners came around to score against Michael Zouzalik, as Despaigne saw his ERA rise to 3.78 through 17 appearances with Norfolk this season.

Norfolk did not have a baserunner in the contest until Charlotte second baseman Jake Peter committed a two-out error on a grounder by Trey Mancini in the seventh inning. Norfolk’s first hit came in the eighth frame, when Corban Joseph lined a single to right field off of Charlotte’s third pitcher of the contest, Tyler Barnette. The Tides batted around and scored four runs in the eighth, with Michael Almanzar and Paul Janish collecting RBI singles in the frame.

Norfolk outfielder L.J. Hoes entered in relief in the eighth inning and proceeded to retire all five batters he faced – including one via a strikeout. Hoes’ pitching performance was the third by a Norfolk position player this homestand, as Hoes and Ozzie Martínez combined to work 4.2 scoreless innings of relief.

With the loss, the Tides are now 3.0 games back of Charlotte in the International League South Division with nine games to play. Each of Norfolk’s final nine games of the season will come against IL South opposition.

The Tides open up a crucial road trip Monday night in the opener of a three-game set at Gwinnett. Tyler Wilson (2-0, 3.98) will get the start for Norfolk and be opposed by right-hander Rob Wooten (3-4, 2.89), with first pitch set for 7:05.

Notes: Earlier Sunday, the Orioles recalled RHP Oliver Drake to Baltimore…Prior to Sunday’s game, Tides Executive Vice President Dave Rosenfield presented a check to the Hampton Roads Prostate Health Forum for $3,700. The Tides matched his total, putting the total donation to the charitable foundation at $7,400…The announced crowd of 10,082 gave Norfolk a total attendance of 31,042 over the final three home games of the regular season…Corban Joseph’s single in the eighth inning extended his hitting streak to six games.

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Ohio State women’s soccer team topped Florida Gulf Coast, 1-0, on Haley Walker-Robinson’s 108th minute game-winner Sunday evening in Fort Myers, Fla. With the win, the Buckeyes remain unbeaten at 4-0-0 while the Eagles drop to 1-2-0.

After the match remained scoreless through regulation and a first overtime period, the freshman from Vista, Calif., finished from six yards out after Nichelle Prince beat a pair of Florida Gulf Coast defenders and centered a perfect cross from the right wing to give the Buckeyes the overtime victory.

Florida Gulf Coast had an opportunity less than three minutes into the match when Tabby Tindell snuck in behind the Ohio State defense but Buckeye goalkeeper Jillian McVicker came out to make the save on the one-on-one opportunity.

The Buckeyes almost took the lead in the ninth minute when Nikki Walts blasted a free kick from 25 yards out but Florida Gulf Coast goalkeeper Melissa Weck was there to deflect the ball over the crossbar and keep the match scoreless.

Ohio State continued to press forward, controlling possession for much of the first half but the match remained scoreless after the first 45 minutes.

For the half, Florida Gulf Coast held a 6-3 lead in shots with both teams putting two on frame. Ohio State held a 4-2 lead in corners over the first 45 minutes.

The Eagles earned an opportunity in the 65th minute when a cross played in from the right wing found Meaghan Mulligan but the shot from 10 yards sailed over the crossbar.

Walts then had another chance for the Buckeyes from long range in the 67th minute but the shot narrowly missed wide right.

Three minutes later, Walts played a long ball down the right wing toward Prince but the shot from the senior was deflected wide by Weck as the match remained scoreless.

Ohio State earned a pair of late corner kicks over the final three minutes but were unable to do anything with them as the match headed to overtime scoreless.

Through regulation, Florida Gulf Coast held a 10-6 lead in shots, including 4-3 on goal, while the Buckeyes held a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks.

After a quiet first overtime period, Emma Firenze played a left-footed corner toward the center of the box in the 102nd minute but Prince’s header just drifted wide right.

Three minutes later, Walker-Robinson finished off her first collegiate goal to give the Buckeyes’ the double-overtime win.

For the match, the Eagles held an 11-8 lead in shots with each team putting four on frame. Ohio State held an 8-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Ohio State continues its road swing at nationally-ranked Virginia Tech at 7 p.m. Thursday.

RIVER BANDITS BLANK CHIEFS IN SERIES FINALE SUNDAY
Franklin Perez fans career-high nine while Kyle Tucker collects three hits

PEORIA, Ill. — The Quad Cities River Bandits collected their seventh shutout win of the year with a 4-0 blanking of the Peoria Chiefs Sunday night at Dozer Park. In the final meeting of the season with Peoria, the Bandits win Sunday gave them a narrow victory in the season series, nine games to seven. Franklin Perez struck out a career-high nine in five scoreless innings while Albert Abreu finished the game with four scoreless frames. Pat Porter put the Bandits up for good with a solo home run in the third while Kyle Tucker had three hits and an RBI in the game.

Perez (3-2) went his scheduled five innings of the tandem start, allowing four hits and walking one while fanning nine for a new career-high in strikeouts. He never had more than one base runner aboard in a single inning, striking out two in a perfect fifth to close out his career day. Abreu (S, 4) allowed just three hits – two with two outs in the ninth – over four scoreless frames. He struck out five while walking just one to close out the win.
The River Bandits (26-23, 57-61) took the lead for good on the Porter home run to lead off the third. It was his eighth home run of the year and fourth RBI in his last three games. Tucker doubled the lead in the sixth with a two-out RBI single to bring home Stephen Wrenn. Tucker had three hits in the game, including a double in the ninth, setting up a two-run single from Randy Cesar for some extra late insurance.

Quad Cities continues their eight-game road swing Monday, beginning a four-game series with the Clinton LumberKings. Fisher Cats Top Thunder To Win Series
Dawson Earns Eighth Win In New Hampshire 6-4 Win Over Trenton
Trenton – Christian Lopes and Richard Urena each had three hits and Rowdy Tellez and Emilio Guerrero each drove in two as the Fisher Cats finished off a winning roadtrip with a 6-4 win in Trenton on Sunday.
New Hampshire (56-63) improved to 9-3 in the month of August with a fourth consecutive series win, this time against playoff-bound Trenton (76-45) at ARM & HAMMER Park.
The Fisher Cats loaded the bases to start the game in the top of the first inning, but scored only one run. Lopes singled and moved to third on a double by Urena. After Jon Berti walked, Tellez knocked in the run with a fielders choice. But a double play ended a chance to tack on more runs.
Trenton moved in front in the bottom of the third inning. Michael O’Neill drew a two-out walk and Tyler Wade and Dustin Fowler hit back-to-back triples to give the Thunder a 2-1 lead.
New Hampshire reclaimed the lead for good in the top of the fourth inning. Trenton starter Caleb Smith walked Ryan Lavarnway and Jason Leblebijian to start the inning and Emilio Guerrero followed with a two-run double to make it 4-2.
The Thunder scored in the fifth inning to pull within a run. Sebastian Valle singled, moved to second on a wild pitch and advanced to third and scored on fly balls.
New Hampshire scored runs in the seventh and eighth to pull away. Tellez hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded in the seventh. Lopes, who had singled, scored. Lopes reached on an error in the eighth, scoring on a double by Urena (3-for-5, 2 2B) to make it 6-3.
Shane Dawson (8-4) earned his team-leading eighth win, allowing three runs in 5.1 IP. Wil Browning struck out five Trenton hitters in 2.0 scoreless innings. Colton Turner and Chris Smith finished up the win. Smith earned his 12th save, allowing a run in the ninth, but stranding two on base to secure the win.
Trenton starter Caleb Smith (2-4) took the loss.
The Fisher Cats return to Northeast Delta Dental Stadium on Monday to start a homestand with the Binghamton Mets. Join us as we begin our Back To School Celebration with a Pencil Bag Giveaway to the first 1,000 kids. For tickets, visit http://www.nhfishercats.com.
