Oceanside defeats Steele Canyon in D II Playoff First Round Game

Willauer-Contributing Writer-Simcox Field at John Carroll Stadium-Oceanside High School-Oceanside, CA-Friday, November 2, 2023:  After a winless season in 2022 of 0-10, the Pirates of Oceanside continued their football tradition in a winning manner as their record improves to 7-4 and defeated the Cougars of Steele Canyon at 5-6  by a 28-3 score in a CIF Section Division II First Round Playoff Game.  

Fale Poumele Head Football Coach at Oceanside on his first CIF Playoff victory over Steele Canyon.  “It was good to get the win in my first year in the playoffs  our kids follows our game plan, executed their responsibilities and did very well today.”  “Last year our team went 0-10 and these are the same kids that are returning for us, so we added a couple of sophomores and juniors when I came in I changed the way on our kids on how to think for the season.”   

“Joe Vinup did great on his 3 touchdown passes he executed well looks for his receivers and that is how we won, Joe and DaMariay those kids are good athletes as they threw together in practice.” said Coach Poumele

QB Joe Vining threw for 93 yards along with 2 touchdown passes to Da Mariay Vivian for 10 and 13 yards and 1 to Akili Hearn (1 reception for 33) for 33.  David Daniels contributed for the Pirates as he scored on a run of 9 yards.  

The Pirates will be at Del Norte in a Division II quarter final round next Friday, November 10th kickoff at 7 PM.  

Bobby Hartman paces Calvin Christian in win over Coastal Academy

Willauer-Contributing Writer-Army Navy Academy-Carlsbad, CA-10-13-23-In a Coastal League Football contest, qb Bobby Hartman threw for 140 yards total along with 1 touchdown pass to Cole Sanders (59 yards receiving) for 4 yards, rushed for 49 yards scored three touchdown runs of 16,3 and 3 yards each paced the 5-2 Calvin Christian Crusaders from Escondido to a 28-22 victory over Coastal Academy from Oceanside, 

Bernie Thomas Head Football Coach at Calvin Christian:  “These kids never quit from the second play of the game that ball was picked off our receiver ripped the ball out of the opponent that set the tone for our squad as they found a way to win.”

“My starting QB Bobby Hartman is a stud he does everything we ask him to do more, he made beautiful reeds off the plays and has pulled the ball down and is a phenomenal athlete.” said Coach Thomas  

 “Blake Elders made a great read off the play, he’s very tenacious and has done his responbsibilities.”  “We have 9 juniors on our squad with 20 kids and they are becoming football players this year they are seeking their roles as leaders which is the biggest chance they have.”

Blake Elders led the Crusaders in rushing with 79 yards and Cole Sanders had 57 yards receiving.  

Coastal Academy 4-4 Nathaniel Benevides led the Stingrays with 56 yards rushing, Nolan White and Moses Gilmore rushed for 51 yards.  qb Zac Garland threw for 165 yards along with 1 touchdown pass of 12 yards to Luke Terpstra 55 yards receiving, Judah Jaggers 64 yards receiving.  

Note:  This is the 3rd time that these two schools have met with Coastal Academy leading the series 2 games to 1.

El Camino’s Kiah Reid paced Palomar Comets to a 43-16 win over Grossmont

Willauer-Contributing Writer-Escondido High School-Escondido, CA-Saturday, September 30, 2023-El Camino alum Kiah Reid passed for 349 yards along with 3 touchdown passes 1 to Jake Whitehead for 36 yards, 29 yards to Amari Derby and 79 yards to brother Tate Read as they paced the Palomar Comets to a 43-16 win over Grossmont College and snapped a 3 game losing streak.

Joe Earley head football coach at Palomar: “It was good to get the win today as you know a win is a win Omar Ireland finished in the game with 78 yards along with 2 touchdown runs of 5 and 6 yards has a good season we started out with our running game well disappointed in the penalties and our offensive performance. “My starting quarterback Kiah Reid hasn’t started since last year along with other things is the 3rd qb that we played in 4 games we have to keep our players healthy in order to get more wins.” “We have bye week this coming week and will travel to Saddleback so we have to be ready to prepare for them. ”
