Sox Rally In Ninth, Fall To Memphis In Extras

Two-Run Ninth Saves Sox Before Two-Run Eleventh Gives Redbirds Walk-Off Win

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO — A tight game throughout; Sunday night’s 4-3 contest between the Sky Sox and Redbirds ended with late-inning dramatics that ultimately favored the home side before 3,425 fans at AutoZone Park in Memphis.

Sox starter Drew Gagnon put together one of his better start of the season, making just one real mistake while limiting damage over a strong two-run, six inning performance against the dangerous Redbirds lineup. The right-hander allowed five hits and three walks while striking out two.

Infielder Alex Mejia got to Gagnon in the home fifth as he launched a one-out long ball to left-centerfield, scoring Matt Williams to provide Memphis a 2-0 lead they would hold for 3.1 more innings.

A combination of Time Cooney, Justin Wright, Keith Butler and Sam Tuivailala kept Coloraodo Springs off the scoreboard for the game’s first eight innings as the Redbirds looked destined for a shutout victory. The quartet of arms collectively allowed two hits and four walks while striking out four Sox batters, handing Mitch Harris the ball in the top of the ninth in hopes of securing the team’s second 2-0 victory in three nights.

Harris could not follow through, allowing two runs in the ninth on a Yadiel Rivera two-run single to short. Nevin Ashley and Logan Schafer came around to score and knot the ballgame at two with one out in the ninth. Pinch-hitter Bryan Petersen and Peter Orr failed to capitalize in potential game-winning at-bats, sending the Sox to the Memphis ninth still deadlocked.

Jaye Chapman took over in the ninth after Time Dillard, Michael Kirkman and Rob Wooten teamed up for two scoreless innings to keep the Sox deficit at two, making the ninth-inning rally possible. Chapman gave Colorado Springs two scoreless frames that it desperately needed as Harris and Marcus Hatley (4-2, 1.69) kept the Sox of the board in the tenth, moving the tight contest to the 11th.

Hatley walked Schafer to open the eleventh before a Yadiel Rivera sacrifice bunt moved the speedy outfielder to second with one out. Pinch-hitter Elian Herrera followed with a base hit, moving Schafer to third to give the visitors runners on the corners still with just one out. After a Redbirds mound visit, Pete Orr came through with a clutch RBI sac fly to plate Schafer and give the Sky Sox their first lead of the night. Herrera stole second base to give Kyle Wren a runner in scoring position but the outfielder could not provide a vital insurance run, flying out o end the inning with the Sox leading, 3-2.

With manger Rick Sweet’s bullpen options limited, Ariel Pena (0-1, 4.66) would come on for the bottom of the eleventh in an unfamiliar save situation. Pena struggled, recording just one out in the frame as Memphis answered with two runs on four consecutive singles by Tommy Pham, Mejia, Dean Anna and Travis Tartamella. Anna’s base knock tied the game at three before Tartamella came through for the home town team with a pinch-hit, walk-off single to give Memphis a thrilling 4-3 victory.

The Redbirds improve to 40-37 while dropping Colorado springs to 30-44 after the heartbreaking defeat.

The Sky Sox will wrap up their four-game series in Memphis on Monday night as Tyler Cravy (7-5, 4.20) looks to get his team back in the win column against Zach Petrick (4-4, 4.32) and the Redbirds. First pitch is slated for 6:05 PM MDT at AutoZone Park.

Philadelphia Union vs. Montreal Impact Post Game Quote Sheet – June 27, 2015

Philadelphia Union head coach Jim Curtin

Jim Curtin Post Game Interview (vs. Montreal)

Opening Remarks

A wild, game end to end. I thought we started the game well in the first 20-25 minutes. I thought we were good. We hit he goal, they came at us a little bit, Piatti started to find space between our mid field and back line, obviously he’s a special player. To see him now in our first game against them, he’s very good. He gets the goal for them kind of from nothing. He was the first shot they had on goal. You get a little bit of momentum and push the game a little bit at the end of the half. Talk about pressing the game in a smart way, and continuing to push. Disappointing to give up the second goal, it was a mistake and Jack pushed us for it. In moments when that happens you’re hoping that maybe Richie can bail you out or Brian can make his big save for you but credit to our guys, they fought hard. They pushed and got the tying goal and then we go up a man and it seems like we have all the momentum in the world and kind of a roller coaster of a night for Ayuk, a young player who will hopefully learn from this. Tough tackle to take. His first yellow card is not a yellow card so I think that put him in a bad spot but when you know you have a yellow you cant leave your feet like that and put it in the referees hand. Difficult, dropped two points tonight so disappointed in that regard.

On balancing out the good and the bad with Eric Ayuk

There were obviously some great moments, the goal. We thought that that was a match up we could have him go at their outside backs on the night. He did that to a certain degree and then unfortunate for him, again I have to say the first yellow is one where he actually gets the ball first and it’s almost like he’s passing it backwards and they sell the follow through pretty well but it’s not a foul yet alone a yellow card. Again he’s got to be smart playing on a yellow card, I thought we had a lot of momentum at that stage once we tie it up and had about 20 minutes to really press the game and create chances which we were doing all night. I saw the stats that they had 38 clearances inside the 18 so difficult that we didn’t get the goal but at the same time we dodged a bullet or two at the end there Tissot could have stolen it.

On players interaction with the referee

Yeah, all that you want is consistency and there were some moments where I think our guys thought they were getting fouled and we didn’t get calls. It’s never the major ones, they usually get those right. It the little one, where a guy gets a piece of a guy after a play. It could be a yellow and set the tone earlier. There were a few of those I thought. Earlier with Oyongo against Ayuk for instance. I let it go if which is fine if that’s the way it’s going to be the whole game but then the cards started coming out and you’re playing a game that no teams really like playing down a man and to finish the way that we did its not really the best with both teams being shorthanded. It a tough league to ref, that’s for sure. Our guys are competitors so they’re going to get on the ref and try to get any little advantage they can. Montreal did the same thing. At the end of the day the 2-2, we both walk out of here with a point and having a PMR, we’re disappointed it wasn’t three.

On conditions during the game

No, I still think that there’s a lot of moments to learn from and there were some good plays. There was some good build up from our attacking and decent defensive performances from guys. Were the conditions crazy? Yeah, absolutely and the field might not look like it from up high but the wind was incredibly strong in the first half, it kind of faded in the second half. It was in our face in the first half. We didn’t get a chance to go with it because the weather changed a bit. Certainly a strange game in terms of weather, red cards, yellow cards, goals, down a man, us coming back and thinking we were going to be able to put the nail in the coffin and then having a guy sent off so wild one. There are still good learning points so we will definitely still look at the tape but yes, it was a strange one to say the least.

On having to chance thing on the fly because of conditions

Yeah, you prepare for things to be one way for instance, we started Zach and Auyk wide because we thought it would be a game were they would sit in and we’d have a lot of possessions. We scored the early goal so that gets thrown out the window as well. The conditions are a little crazy and it became more of a roll your sleeves up and organize fighting. There were moments of good soccer by both teams for sure but, he field isn’t in the best condition as it is and then the weather on top of it. You saw a lot of balls out of bounds. It became more of a fight. Both teams competed like crazy. Do we wish we had the ability to get on a couple of those balls in the box where Zach had a good look, it just kind of skips across. I don’t know who is wrong footed or what. Maurice had a few where they kind of just glanced by him. C.J. was in there. Sheanon put a few good balls in that we just didn’t get on the end of. It was a challenging night. Regarding Chris and Montreal too they made some good clearances and good blocks in box at the last few seconds. We gave up three shots on goal tonight. It’s a reoccurring theme where for whatever reason the chances we give up are critical chances and we need to do a better job of making teams really earn their goals. It was disappointing in that regard but again the guys did show a fight to get out a tie.

On how it is to play a team so close in standing

It’s unique. The foreign people that will make comments on their league that I’m in tough with will say that they’re confused by the fact that some teams play 3,4,5 more games in some chances than other teams. Obviously, it all evens out by the end of the year but the table is strange and it doesn’t tell the true story. You don’t even need to look at it until the end of the year, that’s the only time it matters. Do you wish you everybody could be within a game or two of each other? Yeah that would be ideal but this country, scheduling is a little different than others.  Some teams share fields and there’s different things that go on that kind of affect and make the difficulty of scheduling. Montreal is a unique one because they made that run in the champion’s league. I looked ahead at their schedule because they could have not been able to do the game so we started to look ahead and its crazy. I was hoping to maybe put it in on them at the end but that’s the past and we move on and take the point.  The scheduling is unique to our league for sure.

On Maurice Edu’s game (risks not paying off)

First and foremost Maurice has been our best player this year I would say but yeah there has been times. The LA game, I did talk to him about that one and he was eager to make a play there. He’s got family there and it’s his home town so maybe he pushed it a little to far in LA, he did a good job coming forward. In this game he made mistake on the first goal. I think he could do better moving his feet. Piatti makes a great play but that’s a play I’ve seen Maurice make getting a block there. He’s had a little bit of a dip but I know he’s a great player and he’ll bounce back.  He made a mistake on the second goal. Everybody makes mistakes, sometimes you need your teammates to bail you out, but we’ll look at the tapes and get some things corrected.

On Maurice Edu’s performance

Yeah the games funny that way. Similar to you know we missed the PK the game before but he pushed and stayed with things in the Seattle game it kind of was a wake up call for him and then for him to balance out with the goal at then end. I think it was a great shot, from a distance too. Critical to keep power on a wet day, did a good job of following it up. I was terrified they were going to call off sides for it or something goes wrong. It was a good play for him to rebound that way and get us a point.

He’s been excellent, his ability to be in the game to the 90th minute. C.J. did a great job of battling all day. He bounces off and always comes back with the ball. I think he came up a little short today but you have to give him credit of putting the offensive load on his back for the last few games till the 90th minute.

Midfielder Maurice Edu

On his goal

We needed a goal. We were all trying to get on the end of the set piece. It came out to Fabi, who did well to take a good shot and keep it on frame. I was just trying to follow up and pray that the goalie would make a mistake, which he did. He made the save and then it came out and I was there in the right place at the right time. It’s a credit to Fabi keeping that play alive.

On his attacking mentality when he’s up the field

I don’t know, you’ve got to just play off instinct. I was just trying to anticipate what I think’s going to happen. With the one where C.J. flicked it on, another day I’m able to get a touch on that, but I think the surface affected how it skipped up a little bit. You’ve just got to try to anticipate the play, put yourself in a dangerous position, do whatever you can to help your team whether it’s get on the score sheet or put the ball in a dangerous area for someone else.

On defending in the poor conditions

It’s difficult because you have to be composed, be smart, and you’ve got to try to stay on your feet and not dive in or bite, but at the same time it’s a little bit more difficult on this surface. And I think it played both ways, it played an advantage for us at times, it played an advantage for them too. Something you can’t really dwell on because both teams play on the same conditions and the same surface so you’ve got to just learn and grow from today. I think we probably could have taken three points so it’s a little bit disappointing but in saying that we’ve had a pretty long stretch of games where it’s game after game after game. So to get a point here is alright. We keep our heads up. Now we’ve got an Open Cup game and a little bit of a break so we can get refocused again for the league.

On Eric Ayuk’s up and down performance

Yeah it’s a learning experience, you know? You have to learn from these mistakes. You grow from them. They create you and they shape character. Obviously he took his goal very well and we were all pleased and happy for him because he’s a guy that works hard in training, and he deserves every bit of success that he does get. But now he has a silly mistake there towards the end of the game where we can push on with a man advantage and try to get that go ahead goal. You help the team and hurt the team a little bit so it’s one of those games. We’ve all been in that situation before. He’s a young kid so he’ll learn from that.

Defender Richie Marquez

On playing in such extreme conditions

In the back we had to play it safe and be more careful. Obviously it rained the entire game but you’ve got to come with the same mentality and stay just as focused if not a little more focused than usual.

Midfielder Eric Ayuk

On playing in the extreme conditions

It was tough, tough to play in the rain. The field was bad. I felt better because I had a good goal and the coach told us to keep going and keep working on.

On his goal

Yeah, before we came out he told me that I should always stay [for flick-ons and lay-offs] near the post. Sometimes I’m out too far from him and sometimes I’m too close, so let me just stay near the top [of the box]. I was watching the goalkeeper and took my chance.

On what Jim Curtin had to say about his performance

He let me keep going. I was not too troubled because the team was level. I was so disappointed because of the red card and I left my team who worked hard and earned that point.

On his the referee’s take on his second yellow card

He didn’t really talk to me, he just said that it was a red and that I had to get off of the pitch.

Montreal Impact Post-Game Quotes

Frank Klopas, Head Coach:

On the result

The positive for me, those two games on the road, and obviously not losing two games in a row is one thing we’ve talked about is never losing two games in a row. You know, we got one point but I definitely felt that we dropped points because we played well enough to win.

On the team’s performance

Well it was good. A little bit of a slow start to the game and then we got into it, especially after the second goal. We dominated possession, we created some good chances, and then it was unfortunate because we know Patrice Bernier on a yellow card and we were ready to take him off and then the play occurs so you can beat your head on it all you want but he’s the captain and he gets…whatever. Its over. And then we find a way to score the second goal and then you know, you’re going to be under a little bit of pressure because they’re pushing the game. And then, you know, they tied the game back but we had a great opportunity with Ignacio Piatti to get the third goal and we didn’t. But I felt in stretches of the game and throughout the game we played, like I said, we take the point but we played well enough to take three today.

On the Union’s second goal

What happened was that we cleared the ball out and then normally we have a guy on the post with Ambroise Oyongo and as the ball cleared, it was a hard shot, a very hard shot for the goalie to see because of the amount of traffic and you say now can he push the ball out to the side where it’s not back in the middle and stuff like that. But then it’s something as the ball comes out, you have to move out with it and we stayed a little bit deep and kept him onside. You have guys in the box but it’s a quick reaction. The shot goes, you turn, and it’s a quick bounce back. They equalized that but like I said, I still thought we had that great opportunity, you know, and if you see it again I don’t know how Ignacio misses that one. A great run by Andres Romero and then we make the change late with the last five because Romero is on a yellow card too and we didn’t want to go down another guy.

On the condition of the pitch and if it effected the goal

Yeah, sometimes. Look, you overrun the play, he got stuck with his feet, it’s hard to say. He scored a great goal and it was good for him to have a good performance, especially after the loss at Toronto and to comeback showed the mentality was good with the guys. Like I said, we’ll take the point because we don’t want to lose two games in a row. Now we have to get ready for the home match and get three there.

On the weight off the shoulders of McInerney and Piatti after scoring their first road goals

Yeah, to get those guys to score again. Obviously Jack had played both games and the way the game went in Toronto, we wanted to get him off a little bit earlier. You saw two guys that with Dominic Oduro come back in the lineup and with Dilly Duka, guys that have been out for a little bit, you can see that there were good moments but you can still see that they have missed matches. We had to make some changes after the third game in seven days but I thought the team played well and the guys that came in did a very good job.

On what he saw from Victor Cabrera

It was good, it was aggressive. I think that’s his natural position. We put him out wide in the beginning but he’s got a lot of bite, he’s aggressive in closing the spaces down with players. I think he needs games, obviously he missed a lot of time with his injury and you could tell, again in the game with NYCFC, his fitness is not there but I think he’s a guy that when you play against him as a forward, you need to be aware  because he’s always in the back of your mind. He plays on your mind as a forward because he’s good in the air and he can tackle.

On what is his state of mind after a week like this

It would have been great to get three points out of the two games, or even four. But, like I said, the way that the first game went in Toronto, it was important to regroup and the games come quick, you know, and with the third game in seven days, we knew we had to make changes. Look, you’re never happy with it. It would’ve been great if I got six points out of the two games but we know it’s a process. We know how difficult it is in this league to pick up points on the road, we talked about it, and now we have to regroup again and have a good week of training at home and be ready for NYCFC at home.

Jack McInerney, Forward:

On scoring against his old team

It feels good. I just wanted to go out there and work hard for the team and got an opportunity and made the most of it. We got the point so I’m happy.

On if the team feels they left points on the table

Yeah there was a span there where we gave five or six corners in a row and  we get one good clearance and we can start controlling the game on the ball and we can finish out that game, especially since it ended up being 10-v-10. We’ll come on the road and take a point any day but those type of games happen when youre going to give up points on the road at the end.

On his and Piatti’s first goals on the road

Yeah, it does I mean they depend on us to score goals and I think we’ve scored a good amount of goals this year and going on the road, obviously you want to lock down defense and keep a shutout. Again, we gave up too many goals on the road and I think at the end of the day that’s what cost us some points so, we’re happy and we’ll take the point but we need to bury one.

On the team showing grit after going to 10 men and if it shows an evolution

Yeah, it does. It not secret that we struggled on the road and for us to get a red card and play a man down, I think we scored a goal when we were man down, it just shows how far we’ve come. We for sure would’ve lost this game last year and I think that we’ve gotten some good results on the road this year and I think going forward, if we want to make the playoffs, we have to do that.

On the field conditions

It was pretty tough, I mean the field wasn’t in good condition to begin with so I think if we would’ve lost, it’s hard to make excuses because both teams played under the same conditions but obviously it’s not ideal. It’s something you have to deal with. It’s something that you just have to adjust to and go out there and put in the work.

On if it was a bittersweet ending for the road trip

Yeah, it was. Coming into this, we wanted six out of the nine points this week so we’re a little disappointed. At the end of the day, after the result in Toronto, we wanted to come here and at least get a point out of it. I think two losses on the road would’ve been disappointing so like I said, we’ll take it. We have two home games in a row now that we can get six points out of.

On how he felt when he scored

Yeah it’s just standard Philly fans, they’re always going to boo no matter what. Just use it as motivation and go out there and put in hard work. If you’re on their team, put in hard work, they’d appreciate it so that’s what I tried to do for our team today.

Patrice Bernier, Defender

On if the team is disappointed only to get one point out of the game

Of course. We played well. I think the first ten minutes we were a bit asleep, when they scored we woke up and played our way. We didn’t panic and we got back a goal, we were 1-1. Second half, which has been a bit of an Achilles heel this year, we came out and stayed composed and organized and even when I came out, I was afraid we would collapse but McInerney scored a great goal and got us the lead. They came back at 2-2 and we had a shot at the end to make it 3-2. Yeah, you could say okay, maybe we’re disappointed to not come out with three points but overall for an away game, usually we’re not so good playing away, and being very composed and feeling that we could’ve came out with more, I think this game has to be the recipe for us to maintain so we can get more points on the road.

On what they can take form this game

Yeah, look. A lot of character because usually, if you go back to every game we’ve played when we go down a goal, we usually lose the game. We came back, we fought, we took the lead even at 10 men. A lot of character. I think we take some confidence and a lot of positives from this game. And also the way we played even when we went down 1-0, we didn’t panic. We kept moving the ball and finding the players like Piatti, Romero, Duka, Oduro, those guys can make the difference and they did. If we stay on the same path on away games, I think we’re gonna get a lot more points.

On his second yellow

I thought the referee was already hounding me pretty much the whole game. Look, in my experience, it was a bad yellow card. Yeah you can say I don’t feel like I touched him but he played it right. The referee deemed it was yellow card worthy and that’s that. Got down, my team is down a bit, but luckily they got, they battled through and got us a point. But I’m not going to comment, I know the referee quite well and I know how he was dealing with the game. Its unfortunate to have taken a yellow again and be suspended for next game but like I said, I’ll take out the good thing as the guys responded well and we came out with a point.

PITCHING SHINES AS KEYS SALVAGE WIN
FREDERICK SNAPS FOUR-GAME SLIDE, EARN FIRST WIN OF SECOND-HALF

Salem, Va. –The trio of David Hess, Donnie Hart and Cody Wheeler limited the Salem Red Sox to one run on six hits, and no hits with men in scoring position, as the Frederick Keys salvaged a 3-1 win on Saturday night at LewisGale Field. It was the club’s first second-half win and snapped a four-game losing streak.

Delayed by more than an hour due to rain, the Keys scored all three of their runs in the first two innings. Josh Hart reached on a bunt single to open the game and moved to second on a sacrifice by Gregory Lorenzo. One batter later, Hart would steal third and come home after the throw to third by Jordan Procyshen sailed into left.

Frederick plated two more off Trey Ball in the second with two outs. After Austin Wynns doubled, Conor Bierfeldt clubbed a two-run homer to left to stretch the Keys edge to 3-0. It was Bierfeldt’s first CL home run and eighth overall in 2015. The Connecticut native has three RBIs in his first three games with the orange and black.

Hess (3-4) turned in a strong start to open his second-half. Working five shutout innings, the Tennessee native scattered three hits, walked two and struck out four. The win snapped a two-game losing streak. Additionally it was Hess’s first victory since May 12.

His counterpart Ball (6-6) got things back on track after the second, tying his career-high with 6.2 innings pitched, while giving up just two hits in his final 4.2 frames. Of the three runs Ball allowed, two were earned, while he walked two and struck out three. Half of his losses this season have come against Frederick.

Hart worked a season-high two innings, giving up just two hits, setting up a six-out save chance for Wheeler. Things got off on a tough foot, as two walks and a Tzu-Wei Lin single loaded the bases with nobody out. However Wheeler limited the damage to just a run, getting a double play by Yoilan Cerse and a strikeout of Forrest Allday to keep it a 3-1 game. For the night, Salem ended 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position.

Wheeler would work a perfect ninth to close things out, earning his 10th save of the year. He is now tied for the CL lead with Salem’s Austin Maddox. Austin Wynns (2-for-3) and Tanner Witt (2-for-3) both registered multi-hit games.

The Frederick Keys return home on Sunday when the Wilmington Blue Rocks visit Nymeo Field. Frederick has not announced its starter while the Blue Crew will throw lefty Eric Skoglund (6-2, 2.74). First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m and the broadcast can be heard on 1450 AM The Source and frederickkeys.com. It is Faith Night at the ballpark, while there is a pre-game concert by the Waterboyz for Jesus. There will also be postgame fireworks presented by Turf Equipment and Supply Company. For tickets, fans can contact the Keys at 301-815-9939 or visit frederickkeys.com.

Lansing scored three insurance runs in the bottom of the inning on run-scoring singles by Richard Urena and Ryan McBroom to make the score 5-1.

Dawson (10-4) earned his tenth win by throwing the 7.2 innings while striking out nine. A.J. Ladwig (6-6) pitched seven solid innings allowing just two runs in receiving the tough-luck loss in the contest. The Whitecaps fall to 2-1 in the second half, while the Lugnuts improve to 1-2. EUGENE, Ore. – Coppin State’s Christina Epps, a 2014 graduate, is a national champion.

A confident and consistent Epps treated the overflow crowd to an enthralling performance by soaring a career best 14.09 meters (46 feet, 2.75 inches) to win the triple jump at the USATF Outdoor Track & Field Championships at the University of Oregon’s Hayward Field Friday night.

“It actually hasn’t sunk in yet,” Epps said. “It feels so unreal. I was going through my victory lap yesterday like I can’t believe this is happening right now. I am extremely humbled and honored.”

Epps is the best triple jumper in the United States of America. How amazing is that?

Epps, who competes for the adidas Garden State Track Club, hit her 46-2 3/4 mark on her first attempt and it stood up as the best performance of the competition. April Sinkler was second in the TJ with a 45-4 1/2.

“I feel like I am peaking at the perfect time of the season,” Epps said. “I felt great today. I think I held my hop and step extremely well today and that’s what led to my personal best for the year. I also moved off of the board well going into my jumps.”

With her victory, Epps moved one step closer to earning a sacred spot on the 2015 IAAF World Championships team set for August 22-30 in Beijing, China. She needs to clear 14.20 meters in order to officially earn a trip to China. Fortunately for Epps, her performance on Friday earned her another opportunity to reach that destination.

Epps will compete in the 2015 Pan-American games in Toronto next month. The triple jump will be held on Tuesday, July 21 at 6:00 p.m. according to the schedule. For Epps, this was the ultimate triumph in an amazing and excellent career.

“I am blessed to have another opportunity to hit the mark I need for world championships,” Epps said. “This will be my first international competition, so I am excited about that.”

Earlier this year, Epps won the triple jump at the Penn Relays and the Morgan State Legacy Meet. She jumped her previous career best of 13.83 meters at the Legacy Meet. Epps credited the energy and enthusiasm of the large crowd for providing the necessary fuel for her best performance of her life.

“The crowd here gives so much support and love to everyone,” Epps said. “Every event here is amazing. The atmosphere is something you can’t beat. When you walk into the stadium, it feels like you’re at the Super Bowl. The weather was hot and it worked out great for a lot of competitors because there were tons of PRs today.”

Epps was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Woman of the Year and one of the 30 finalists for the 2014 NCAA Woman of the Year Award. During her star-studded career, Epps was an 12-time All-MEAC student-athlete in track and field and a six-time triple jump champion in the conference. She is the current Coppin State triple jump record holder. Her school standard is 13.40 meters (43 feet, 11.75 inches).

Epps was selected as the Coppin State Female Presidents’ Eagle Award Winner, Female Athlete of the Year and MVP in track and field for the 2013-14 season. She served as team captain from 2012-2014 and was the SAAC President from 2013-2014.

While Epps put in hours of countless work in all types of weather conditions, made sacrifices and pushed her body beyond limits she didn’t think was possible, she knows that the support of plenty of people behind the scenes made this moment possible.

“First and foremost, I would like to thank my lord and savior Jesus Christ,” Epps said. “Without him I would have none of this. My supporting cast has been amazing. My coach (Alecia Shields-Gadson) who pushed me to the next level mainly by being my sport psychologist and getting me to believe in myself like she believed in me has been nothing but a huge blessing. She is a huge part of my success and I wouldn’t trade her for anything in the world. She’s the coach of the year in my book.

“My mom Beverly Epps-Blackwell is a God-fearing woman who always instilled in me to put God first and your blessings will overflow. Her constant support and prayers and support has made this process worthwhile. My weight room and plyo coaches Nick and Toya pushed me everyday even when I complained about my how my body was hurting and I didn’t want to go anymore. They have helped improve my strength and overall explosiveness in ways you wouldn’t believe especially after an ACL tear. I am extremely grateful to have them.

“My boyfriend Emeka Chiazor has always been there for me. Days I cried and felt like giving up, he wouldn’t baby me. The days I needed someone to come out and help me take out the pit or record me or take me to meets, he has always been there. My supporting cast helped make this dream come true.”

Shields-Gadson was happy to witness Epps take her performance to another level.

“We are so proud of the hard work and dedication Christina has put into her craft to become a national champion,” Shields-Gadson said. “We give all glory to God for helping her performance tonight.”

Whitecaps crash into Dawson roadblock, 5-1

LANSING, Mich.
— All-Star Shane Dawson worked into the eighth inning and tied a career high with nine strikeouts, backstopping the Lansing Lugnuts (1-2, 43-30) to a 5-1 win over the West Michigan Whitecaps (2-1, 35-37) Saturday at Cooley Law School Stadium.

After a one-hour, 27-minute field conditions delay, Dawson (Win, 10-4) allowed four hits and one walk in 7.2 IP, becoming the third pitcher in minor league baseball to reach ten wins.

Locastro laced the ball against A.J. Ladwig (Loss, 6-6) on the ground down the third base line and it rolled to the corner. Left fielder Ross Kivett slipped, allowing Locastro to scamper around the bases.

In the eighth, the second baseman Locastro was hit by a pitch, tying the Lansing Lugnuts single-season record.

Lansing tallied three insurance runs in the eighth to take a 5-1 edge.

Richard Urena drove in his 49th RBI on a single, tying Rowdy Tellez for the league lead.
